Isaiah, 40

1. 'Console my people, console them,' says your God.

1. Tröstet, tröstet mein Volk, / spricht euer Gott.

2. 'Speak to the heart of Jerusalem and cry to her that her period of service is ended, that her guilt has been atoned for, that, from the hand of Yahweh, she has received double punishment for all her sins.'

2. Redet Jerusalem zu Herzen / und verkündet der Stadt, dass ihr Frondienst zu Ende geht, / dass ihre Schuld beglichen ist; denn sie hat die volle Strafe erlitten / von der Hand des Herrn / für all ihre Sünden.

3. A voice cries, 'Prepare in the desert a way for Yahweh. Make a straight highway for our God across the wastelands.

3. Eine Stimme ruft: / Bahnt für den Herrn einen Weg durch die Wüste! Baut in der Steppe eine ebene Straße / für unseren Gott!

4. Let every valley be filled in, every mountain and hill be levelled, every cliff become a plateau, every escarpment a plain;

4. Jedes Tal soll sich heben, / jeder Berg und Hügel sich senken. Was krumm ist, soll gerade werden, / und was hüglig ist, werde eben.

5. then the glory of Yahweh will be revealed and all humanity will see it together, for the mouth of Yahweh has spoken.'

5. Dann offenbart sich die Herrlichkeit des Herrn, / alle Sterblichen werden sie sehen. / Ja, der Mund des Herrn hat gesprochen.

6. A voice said, 'Cry aloud!' and I said, 'What shall I cry?' -'All humanity is grass and all its beauty like the wild flower's.

6. Eine Stimme sagte: Verkünde! / Ich fragte: Was soll ich verkünden? Alles Sterbliche ist wie das Gras / und all seine Schönheit ist wie die Blume auf dem Feld.

7. The grass withers, the flower fades when the breath of Yahweh blows on them. (The grass is surely the people.)

7. Das Gras verdorrt, die Blume verwelkt, / wenn der Atem des Herrn darüber weht. / Wahrhaftig, Gras ist das Volk.

8. The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God remains for ever.'

8. Das Gras verdorrt, die Blume verwelkt, / doch das Wort unseres Gottes bleibt in Ewigkeit.

9. Go up on a high mountain, messenger of Zion. Shout as loud as you can, messenger of Jerusalem! Shout fearlessly, say to the towns of Judah, 'Here is your God.'

9. Steig auf einen hohen Berg, / Zion, du Botin der Freude! Erheb deine Stimme mit Macht, / Jerusalem, du Botin der Freude! Erheb deine Stimme, fürchte dich nicht! / Sag den Städten in Juda: / Seht, da ist euer Gott.

10. Here is Lord Yahweh coming with power, his arm maintains his authority, his reward is with him and his prize precedes him.

10. Seht, Gott der Herr, kommt mit Macht, / er herrscht mit starkem Arm. Seht, er bringt seinen Siegespreis mit: / Alle, die er gewonnen hat, gehen vor ihm her.

11. He is like a shepherd feeding his flock, gathering lambs in his arms, holding them against his breast and leading to their rest the mother ewes.

11. Wie ein Hirt führt er seine Herde zur Weide, / er sammelt sie mit starker Hand. Die Lämmer trägt er auf dem Arm, / die Mutterschafe führt er behutsam.

12. Who was it measured the water of the sea in the hollow of his hand and calculated the heavens to the nearest inch, gauged the dust of the earth to the nearest bushel, weighed the mountains in scales, the hills in a balance?

12. Wer misst das Meer mit der hohlen Hand? / Wer kann mit der ausgespannten Hand den Himmel vermessen? / Wer misst den Staub der Erde mit einem Scheffel? Wer wiegt die Berge mit einer Waage / und mit Gewichten die Hügel?

13. Who directed the spirit of Yahweh, what counsellor could have instructed him?

13. Wer bestimmt den Geist des Herrn? / Wer kann sein Berater sein und ihn unterrichten?

14. Whom has he consulted to enlighten him, to instruct him in the path of judgement, to teach him knowledge and show him how to understand?

14. Wen fragt er um Rat / und wer vermittelt ihm Einsicht? Wer kann ihn über die Pfade des Rechts belehren? / Wer lehrt ihn das Wissen / und zeigt ihm den Weg der Erkenntnis?

15. See, the nations are like a drop in a bucket, they count as a grain of dust on the scales. See, coasts and islands weigh no more than fine powder.

15. Seht, die Völker sind wie ein Tropfen am Eimer, sie gelten so viel wie ein Stäubchen auf der Waage. / Ganze Inseln wiegen nicht mehr als ein Sandkorn.

16. The Lebanon is not enough for the burning fires nor its animals enough for the burnt offering.

16. Der Libanon reicht nicht aus für das Brennholz, / sein Wild genügt nicht für die Opfer.

17. All the nations are as nothing before him, for him they count as nothingness and emptiness.

17. Alle Völker sind vor Gott wie ein Nichts, / für ihn sind sie wertlos und nichtig.

18. To whom can you compare God? What image can you contrive of him?

18. Mit wem wollt ihr Gott vergleichen / und welches Bild an seine Stelle setzen?

19. The craftsman casts an idol, a goldsmith overlays it with gold and casts silver chains for it.

19. Der Handwerker gießt ein Götterbild, / der Goldschmied überzieht es mit Gold / und fertigt silberne Ketten dazu.

20. Someone too poor to afford a sacrifice chooses a piece of wood that will not rot; he then seeks out a skilled craftsman to set up an idol that will not totter.

20. Wer arm ist, wählt für ein Weihegeschenk / ein Holz, das nicht fault; er sucht einen fähigen Meister, / der ihm das Götterbild aufstellt, / sodass es nicht wackelt. (41,6) Dabei hilft einer dem andern; / er sagt zu seinem Bruder: Pack an! (41,7) So ermuntert der Handwerker den Goldschmied, / der, der glättet, den Schmied am Amboss; er sagt: Die Lötung ist gut!, / dann befestigt er das Ganze mit Nägeln, / damit es nicht wackelt.

21. Did you not know, had you not heard? Was it not told you from the beginning? Have you not understood how the earth was set on its foundations?

21. Wisst ihr es nicht, hört ihr es nicht, / war es euch nicht von Anfang an bekannt? Habt ihr es nicht immer wieder erfahren / seit der Grundlegung der Erde?

22. He who sits enthroned above the circle of the earth, the inhabitants of which are like grasshoppers, stretches out the heavens like a cloth, spreads them out like a tent to live in.

22. Er ist es, der über dem Erdenrund thront; / wie Heuschrecken sind ihre Bewohner. Wie einen Schleier spannt er den Himmel aus, / er breitet ihn aus wie ein Zelt zum Wohnen.

23. He reduces princes to nothing, the rulers of the world to mere emptiness.

23. Er macht die Fürsten zunichte, / er nimmt den Richtern der Erde jeden Einfluss.

24. Scarcely are they planted, scarcely sown, scarcely has their stem taken root in the soil, than he blows on them and they wither and the storm carries them away like chaff.

24. Kaum sind sie gesät und gepflanzt, / kaum wurzelt ihr Stamm in der Erde, da bläst er sie an, sodass sie verdorren; / der Sturm trägt sie fort wie Spreu.

25. 'To whom can you compare me, or who is my equal?' says the Holy One.

25. Mit wem wollt ihr mich vergleichen? / Wem sollte ich ähnlich sein?, spricht der Heilige.

26. Lift your eyes and look: he who created these things leads out their army in order, summoning each of them by name. So mighty is his power, so great his strength, that not one fails to answer.

26. Hebt eure Augen in die Höhe und seht: / Wer hat die (Sterne) dort oben erschaffen? Er ist es, der ihr Heer täglich zählt und heraufführt, / der sie alle beim Namen ruft. Vor dem Allgewaltigen und Mächtigen / wagt keiner zu fehlen.

27. How can you say, Jacob, how can you repeat, Israel, 'My way is hidden from Yahweh, my rights are ignored by my God'?

27. Jakob, warum sagst du, / Israel, warum sprichst du: Mein Weg ist dem Herrn verborgen, / meinem Gott entgeht mein Recht?

28. Did you not know? Had you not heard? Yahweh is the everlasting God, he created the remotest parts of the earth. He does not grow tired or weary, his understanding is beyond fathoming.

28. Weißt du es nicht, hörst du es nicht? / Der Herr ist ein ewiger Gott, / der die weite Erde erschuf. Er wird nicht müde und matt, / unergründlich ist seine Einsicht.

29. He gives strength to the weary, he strengthens the powerless.

29. Er gibt dem Müden Kraft, / dem Kraftlosen verleiht er große Stärke.

30. Youths grow tired and weary, the young stumble and fall,

30. Die Jungen werden müde und matt, / junge Männer stolpern und stürzen.

31. but those who hope in Yahweh will regain their strength, they will sprout wings like eagles, though they run they will not grow weary, though they walk they will never tire.

31. Die aber, die dem Herrn vertrauen, / schöpfen neue Kraft, / sie bekommen Flügel wie Adler. Sie laufen und werden nicht müde, / sie gehen und werden nicht matt.
