Isaïe, 58

1. Crie à plein gosier, ne te retiens pas ; fais retentir ta voix comme la trompette, et dénonce à mon peuple son péché, à la maison de Jacob ses iniquités.

1. Cry out full-throated and unsparingly, lift up your voice like a trumpet blast; Tell my people their wickedness, and the house of Jacob their sins.

2. Ils me cherchent chaque jour, et ils veulent connaître mes voies, comme une nation qui aurait pratiqué la justice; et n'aurait pas abandonné le commandement de son Dieu; Ils me demandent des jugements justes, ils veulent que Dieu s'approche

2. They seek me day after day, and desire to know my ways, Like a nation that has done what is just and not abandoned the law of their God; They ask me to declare what is due them, pleased to gain access to God.

3. "Que nous sert de jeûner, si vous ne le voyez pas, d'humilier notre âme, si vous n'y prenez pas garde ?" -- Au jour de votre jeûne, vous faites vos affaires et vous pressez au travail tous vos mercenaires.

3. "Why do we fast, and you do not see it? afflict ourselves, and you take no note of it?" Lo, on your fast day you carry out your own pursuits, and drive all your laborers.

4. Voici, c'est en vous disputant et vous querellant que vous jeûnez; jusqu'à frapper du poing méchamment ! Vous ne jeûnez pas en ce jour, de manière à faire écouter votre voix en haut.

4. Yes, your fast ends in quarreling and fighting, striking with wicked claw. Would that today you might fast so as to make your voice heard on high!

5. Est-ce à un jeûne pareil que je prends plaisir? Est-ce là un jour où l'homme humilie son âme? Courber la tête comme un jonc, se coucher sur le sac et la cendre est-ce là ce que tu appelles un jeûne, un jour agréable à Yahweh?

5. Is this the manner of fasting I wish, of keeping a day of penance: That a man bow his head like a reed, and lie in sackcloth and ashes? Do you call this a fast, a day acceptable to the LORD?

6. Le jeûne que je choisis ne consiste-t-il pas en ceci: détacher les chaînes injustes, délier les noeuds du joug, renvoyer libres les opprimés, briser toute espèce de joug?

6. This, rather, is the fasting that I wish: releasing those bound unjustly, untying the thongs of the yoke; Setting free the oppressed, breaking every yoke;

7. Ne consiste-t-il pas à rompre ton pain à celui qui a faim, à recueillir chez toi les malheureux sans asile ; si tu vois un homme nu, à le couvrir, à ne point te détourner de ta propre chair?

7. Sharing your bread with the hungry, sheltering the oppressed and the homeless; Clothing the naked when you see them, and not turning your back on your own.

8. Alors ta lumière poindra comme l'aurore, et ta guérison germera promptement; ta justice marchera devant toi ; la gloire de Yahweh sera ton arrière garde.

8. Then your light shall break forth like the dawn, and your wound shall quickly be healed; Your vindication shall go before you, and the glory of the LORD shall be your rear guard.

9. Alors tu appelleras, et Yahweh répondra tu crieras, et il dira : "Me voici !" Si tu bannis du milieu de toi le joug, le geste menaçant, les discours injurieux;

9. Then you shall call, and the LORD will answer, you shall cry for help, and he will say: Here I am! If you remove from your midst oppression, false accusation and malicious speech;

10. si tu donnes la nourriture à l'affamé, et si tu rassasies l'âme affligée ; Ta lumière se lèvera au sein de l'obscurité, et tes ténèbres brilleront comme le midi.

10. If you bestow your bread on the hungry and satisfy the afflicted; Then light shall rise for you in the darkness, and the gloom shall become for you like midday;

11. Et Yahweh te guidera perpétuellement, il rassasiera ton âme dans les lieux arides. Il donnera de la vigueur à tes os; tu seras comme un jardin bien arrosé, comme une source d'eau vive, qui ne tarit jamais.

11. Then the LORD will guide you always and give you plenty even on the parched land. He will renew your strength, and you shall be like a watered garden, like a spring whose water never fails.

12. Tes enfants rebâtiront tes ruines antiques; tu relèveras des fondements posés aux anciens âges ; on t'appellera le réparateur des brèches, le restaurateur des chemins, pour rendre le pays habitable.

12. The ancient ruins shall be rebuilt for your sake, and the foundations from ages past you shall raise up; "Repairer of the breach," they shall call you, "Restorer of ruined homesteads."

13. Si tu t'abstiens de fouler aux pieds le sabbat, en t'occupant de tes affaires en mon saint jour, et que tu appelles le sabbat les délices, vénérable le saint jour de Yahweh, et que tu l'honores en ne poursuivant point tes voies, en ne te livrant pas à tes affaires et à de vains discours;

13. If you hold back your foot on the sabbath from following your own pursuits on my holy day; If you call the sabbath a delight, and the LORD'S holy day honorable; If you honor it by not following your ways, seeking your own interests, or speaking with malice--

14. Alors tu trouveras tes délices en Yahweh, et je te transporterai comme en triomphe sur les hauteurs du pays, et je te ferai jouir de l'héritage de Jacob, ton père ; car la bouche de Yahweh a parlé.

14. Then you shall delight in the LORD, and I will make you ride on the heights of the earth; I will nourish you with the heritage of Jacob, your father, for the mouth of the LORD has spoken.
