2 Maccabées, 14

1. Trois ans s'étant écoulés. Judas et sescompagnons apprirent que Démétrius. fils deSéleucus, ayant fait voile du port de Tripoli avec unearmée nombreuse et une flotte,

1. Three years later, Judas and his men learned that Demetrius, son of Seleucus, had sailed into the port of Tripolis with a powerful army and a fleet,

2. s'était rendu maître du pays et avait mis àmort Antiochus et son tuteur Lysias.

2. and that he had occupied the country, after doing away with Antiochus and his guardian Lysias.

3. Un certain Alcime, précédemment devenu grandprêtre, mais qui s'était volontairementsouillé dans les temps de confusion, comprenant qu'il nelui restait plus aucun espoir de salut ni d'accès àl'autel saint,

3. A certain Alcimus, a former high priest, who had willfully incurred defilement at the time of the revolt, realized that there was no way for him to salvage his position and regain access to the holy altar.

4. vint trouver le roi Démétrius en l'an centcinquante, lui offrant une couronne d'or avec une palme et deplus quelques rameaux d'olivier, tels qu'il est d'usage d'enoffrir au temple; et, ce jour-là, il ne fit rien deplus.

4. So he went to King Demetrius in the year one hundred and fifty-one and presented him with a gold crown and a palm branch, as well as some of the customary olive branches from the temple. On that occasion he kept quiet.

5. Mais il trouva une occasion favorable à saperversité, quand Démétrius, l'ayantappelé dans son conseil, l'interrogea sur les dispositionset les desseins des Juifs.

5. But he found an opportunity to further his mad scheme when he was invited to the council by Demetrius and questioned about the dispositions and intentions of the Jews. He replied:

6. Il répondit: "Les Juifs que l'on nomme Assidéens,dont Judas Machabée est le chef, fomentent la guerre etles séditions, et ne souffrent pas que le royaume soit enpaix.

6. "Those Jews called Hasideans, led by Judas Maccabeus, are warmongers, who stir up sedition and keep the kingdom from enjoying peace and quiet.

7. Voilà pourquoi, ayant été exclu de meshonneurs héréditaires, je veux dire du souverainpontificat, je suis venu ici,

7. For this reason, now that I am deprived of my ancestral dignity, that is to say, the high priesthood, I have come here--

8. d'abord avec le désir sincère de soutenir lesintérêts du roi, ensuite dans le but de procureraussi le bien-être de mes concitoyens; car latémérité de ces hommes cause à toutenotre nation les plus grands maux.

8. first, out of my genuine concern for the king's interests, and secondly, out of consideration for my own countrymen, since our entire nation is suffering great affliction from the unreasonable conduct of the people just mentioned.

9. Toi donc, ô roi, quand tu auras pris connaissance detoutes ces choses, pourvois au salut de notre pays et de notrenation opprimée, selon cette bonté qui te rendaffable envers tous.

9. When you have informed yourself in detail on these matters, O king, act in the interest of our country and its hard-pressed people with the same gracious consideration that you show toward all.

10. Car, tant que Judas sera en vie, il sera impossible de ramenerla paix dans l'État."

10. As long as Judas is around, it is impossible for the state to enjoy peace."

11. Dès qu'il eut parlé de la sorte, les autres amisdu roi qui détestaient Judas, enflammèrent encoredavantage Démétrius.

11. When he had said this, the other Friends who were hostile to Judas quickly added fuel to Demetrius' indignation.

12. Il appela aussitôt Nicanor, qui avait commandél'escadron des éléphants, le nommagénéral de l'année de Judée et le fitpartir,

12. The king immediately chose Nicanor, who had been in command of the elephants, and appointed him governor of Judea. He sent him off

13. avec ordre écrit de faire périr Judas, dedisperser ses compagnons, et d'installer Alcime grandprêtre du temple auguste.

13. with orders to put Judas to death, to disperse his followers, and to set up Alcimus as high priest of the great temple.

14. Les Gentils, qui s'étaient enfuis de la Judéedevant Judas, se rassemblèrent par troupes autour deNicanor, pensant bien que l'infortune et le malheur des Juifstourneraient à leur propre avantage.

14. The Gentiles from Judea, who would have banished Judas, came flocking to Nicanor, thinking that the misfortunes and calamities of the Jews would mean prosperity for themselves.

15. Quand les Juifs apprirent ta marche de Nicanor et l'attaquedes nations, ils se couvrirent de poussière et ilsprièrent Celui qui avait établi son peuple àjamais, et avait sans cesse protégé sonhéritage par des signes manifestes.

15. When the Jews heard of Nicanor's coming, and that the Gentiles were rallying to him, they sprinkled themselves with earth and prayed to him who established his people forever, and who always comes to the aid of his heritage.

16. Sur l'ordre de leur chef, ils partirent sur-le-champ et envinrent aux mains avec l'ennemi, au bourg de Dessau.

16. At their leader's command, they set out at once and came upon the enemy at the village of Adasa.

17. Simon, frère de Judas, avait engagé le combatcontre Nicanor, mais, déconcerté par l'apparitionsubite de l'ennemi, il subit un léger échec.

17. Judas' brother Simon had engaged Nicanor, but because of the sudden appearance of the enemy suffered a slight repulse.

18. Toutefois Nicanor, apprenant quelle était la valeur deJudas et de ses compagnons, et avec quelleintrépidité ils se battaient pour leur patrie,craignit de s'en remettre au jugement par le sang.

18. However, when Nicanor heard of the valor of Judas and his men, and the great courage with which they fought for their country, he shrank from deciding the issue by bloodshed.

19. Il envoya donc Posidonius, Théodote et Mattathias pourtendre la main aux Juifs et recevoir la leur.

19. So he sent Posidonius, Theodotus and Mattathias to arrange an agreement.

20. Après avoir longtemps examiné ces propositions,le général les communiqua à l'armée,et, quand il fut évident que tous étaient dumême avis, on consentit à traiter.

20. After a long discussion of the terms, each leader communicated them to his troops; and when general agreement was expressed, they assented to the treaty.

21. On fixa un jour où les deux chefs se réuniraientseul à seul; Judas s'y présenta, et dessièges d'honneur furent placés auprèsd'eux.

21. A day was set on which the leaders would meet by themselves. From each side a chariot came forward and thrones were set in place.

22. Cependant Judas avait aposté des hommes armésdans des positions avantageuses, dans la crainte de quelqueperfidie soudaine de la part de l'ennemi. Ils eurent un entretienconvenable.

22. Judas had posted armed men in readiness at suitable points for fear that the enemy might suddenly carry out some treacherous plan. But the conference was held in the proper way.

23. Nicanor passa quelque temps à Jérusalem, sans yfaire rien d'injuste, et il congédia les foules quis'étaient rassemblées par troupeaux.

23. Nicanor stayed on in Jerusalem, where he did nothing out of place. He got rid of the throngs of ordinary people who gathered around him;

24. Il avait avec Judas les relations les plus amicales,éprouvant pour lui une inclination de coeur.

24. but he always kept Judas in his company, for he had a cordial affection for the man.

25. Il l'engagea à se marier et à avoir des enfants;Judas se maria, vécut heureusement et jouit de la vie.

25. He urged him to marry and have children; so Judas married, settled down, and shared the common life.

26. Alcime, voyant l'amitié qui régnait entre eux,prit une copie du traité conclu, et se renditauprès de Démétrius; il lui dit que Nicanoravait des desseins contraires aux intérêts del'État, puisqu'il avait désigné pour leremplacer, Judas, un ennemi du royaume.

26. When Alcimus saw their friendship for each other, he took the treaty that had been made, went to Demetrius, and said that Nicanor was plotting against the state, and that he had appointed Judas, the conspirator against the kingdom, to be his successor.

27. Le roi en fut hors de lui; excité par les calomnies dece scélérat, il écrivit à Nicanorqu'il avait un grand déplaisir des conventions conclues etqu'il lui ordonnait de lui envoyer sans délai àAntioche Machabée, chargé de chaînes.

27. Stirred up by the villain's calumnies, the king became enraged. He wrote to Nicanor, stating that he was displeased with the treaty, and ordering him to send Maccabeus as a prisoner to Antioch without delay.

28. Au reçu de cette lettre, Nicanor fut consterné;il lui en coûtait beaucoup d'avoir à violer desconventions arrêtées, sans que Judas eût rienfait d'injuste.

28. When this message reached Nicanor he was dismayed, for he hated to break his agreement with a man who had done no wrong.

29. Mais, comme il ne lui était pas permis derésister au roi, il cherchait une occasion favorable pourexécuter son ordre par quelque stratagème.

29. However, there was no way of opposing the king, so he watched for an opportunity to carry out this order by a stratagem.

30. Machabée, de son côté, remarquant queNicanor se montrait plus réservé à sonégard et que leurs relations ordinaires étaientmoins amicales, comprit que cette froideur n'annonçaitrien de bon; il rassembla un grand nombre des siens et sedéroba à Nicanor.

30. But Maccabeus noticed that Nicanor was becoming cool in his dealings with him, and acting with unaccustomed rudeness when they met; he concluded that this coldness betokened no good. So he gathered together a large number of his men, and went into hiding from Nicanor.

31. Quand Nicanor vit qu'il avait été surpris parl'énergique résolution de Judas, il se rendit autemple auguste et saint, pendant que les prêtres offraientles sacrifices accoutumés, et leur ordonna de lui livrercet homme.

31. When Nicanor realized that he had been disgracefully outwitted by the man, he went to the great and holy temple, at a time when the priests were offering the customary sacrifices, and ordered them to surrender Judas.

32. Comme ils assuraient avec serment qu'ils ignoraient oùétait l'homme qu'il cherchait, Nicanor leva la main versle temple

32. As they declared under oath that they did not know where the wanted man was,

33. et jura, en disant "Si vous ne me livrez Judasenchaîné, je raserai au niveau du sol ce sanctuairede Dieu, je détruirai l'autel et j'élèveraiici un temple magnifique à Bacchus."

33. he raised his right hand toward the temple and swore this oath: "If you do not hand Judas over to me as prisoner, I will level this shrine of God to the ground; I will tear down the altar, and erect here a splendid temple to Dionysus."

34. Ayant ainsi parlé, il se retira. De leurcôté, les prêtres, levant les mains vers leciel, invoquèrent Celui qui de tout temps a combattu pournotre peuple, en disant:

34. With these words he went away. The priests stretched out their hands toward heaven, calling upon the unfailing defender of our nation in these words:

35. "Vous, Seigneur, qui n'avez besoin de rien, il vous a plu quele temple où vous habitez soit au milieu de nous.

35. "Lord of all, though you are in need of nothing, you have approved of a temple for your dwelling place among us.

36. Maintenant donc, seigneur, saint de toute sainteté,préservez à jamais de toute souillure cette demeurerécemment purifiée."

36. Therefore, O holy One, Lord of all holiness, preserve forever undefiled this house, which has been so recently purified."

37. Or un certain Razis, un des anciens de Jérusalem, futdénoncé à Nicanor; c'était un hommeaimant ses concitoyens, de très bonne renommée, etappelé le père des Juifs, à cause de sabienfaisance.

37. A certain Razis, one of the elders of Jerusalem, was denounced to Nicanor as a patriot. A man highly regarded, he was called a father of the Jews because of his love for them.

38. Car dans les temps antérieurs, où il fallaitéviter tout commerce avec les païens, ils'était attiré une accusation de judaïsme et,avec une invincible constance, il avait exposé, pour lejudaïsme, son corps et sa vie.

38. In the early days of the revolt, he had been convicted of Judaism, and had risked body and life in his ardent zeal for it.

39. Nicanor, voulant donner une preuve de son hostilitécontre les Juifs, envoya plus de cinq cents soldats pour leprendre;

39. Nicanor, to show his detestation of the Jews, sent more than five hundred soldiers to arrest him.

40. car il ne doutait pas que son arrestation ne fût ungrand coup porté aux Juifs.

40. He thought that by arresting such a man he would deal the Jews a hard blow.

41. Cette troupe était sur le point de s'emparer de la touret de forcer l'entrée du vestibule; déjàl'ordre était donné d'y mettre le feu et debrûler les portes. Mais, au moment où il allaitêtre pris, Razis se jeta sur son épée,

41. But when these troops, on the point of capturing the tower, were forcing the outer gate and calling for fire to set the door ablaze, Razis, now caught on all sides, turned his sword against himself,

42. aimant mieux mourir noblement que de tomber entre des mainscriminelles et de subir des outrages indignes de sa proprenoblesse.

42. preferring to die nobly rather than fall into the hands of vile men and suffer outrages unworthy of his noble birth.

43. Mais, comme, dans sa précipitation, il nes'était pas frappé au bon endroit, voyant la foulese ruer par les portes, il courut avec courage en haut de lamuraille et se précipita bravement sur la foule.

43. In the excitement of the struggle he failed to strike exactly. So while the troops rushed in through the doors, he gallantly ran up to the top of the wall and with manly courage threw himself down into the crowd.

44. Tous reculèrent aussitôt, et il se forma unespace vide au milieu duquel il tomba.

44. But as they quickly drew back and left an opening, he fell into the middle of the empty space.

45. Respirant encore et l'âme enflammée, il sereleva, tout ruisselant de sang, et malgré d'horriblesblessures, il traversa la foule en courant et, debout sur uneroche qui se dressait là,

45. Still breathing, and inflamed with anger, he got up and ran through the crowd, with blood gushing from his frightful wounds.

46. ayant déjà perdu tout son sang, il s'arracha lesentrailles, les jeta de ses deux mains sur la foule, et pria leMaître de la vie et de l'âme de les lui rendre unjour; ce fut ainsi qu'il mourut.

46. Then, standing on a steep rock, as he lost the last of his blood, he tore out his entrails and flung them with both hands into the crowd, calling upon the Lord of life and of spirit to give these back to him again. Such was the manner of his death.
