2 Maccabées, 12

1. Ce traité conclu, Lysias sen retourna auprès duroi, et les Juifs se mirent à cultiver leurs champs.

1. After these agreements were made, Lysias returned to the king, and the Jews went about their farming.

2. Or les généraux de la contrée,Timothée et Apollonius, fils de Germée, ainsi queHiéronyme et Démophon, auxquels il faut ajouterNicanor, gouverneur de Chypre, ne les laissaient pas tranquillesni vivre en paix.

2. But some of the local governors, Timothy and Apollonius, son of Gennaeus, as also Hieronymus and Demophon, to say nothing of Nicanor, the commander of the Cyprians, would not allow them to live in peace.

3. Cependant les habitants de Joppé commirent un crimeabominable. Ils invitèrent les Juifs qui demeuraient parmieux à monter avec leurs femmes et leurs enfants sur desbarques préparées par eux, comme s'ils n'avaientcontre eux aucune inimitié,

3. Some people of Joppa also committed this outrage: they invited the Jews who lived among them, together with their wives and children, to embark on boats which they had provided. There was no hint of enmity toward them;

4. mais agissaient en vertu d'une décision prise en communpar la ville. Les Juifs acceptèrent, comme des gens quidésirent la paix et n'ont aucune défiance. Maislorsqu'ils furent au large, on les coula à fond, au nombrede plus de deux cents au moins.

4. this was done by public vote of the city. When the Jews, not suspecting treachery and wishing to live on friendly terms, accepted the invitation, the people of Joppa took them out to sea and drowned at least two hundred of them.

5. Dés que Judas eut appris la cruauté commisecontre des hommes de sa nation, il donna des ordres à sescompagnons, et, après avoir invoqué Dieu,

5. As soon as Judas heard of the barbarous deed perpetrated against his countrymen, he summoned his men;

6. le juste juge, il marcha contre les meurtriers de sesfrères, mit le feu pendant la nuit aux constructions duport, brûla les navires et passa au fil del'épée ceux qui y avaient cherché unrefuge.

6. and after calling upon God, the just judge, he marched against the murderers of his kinsmen. In a night attack he set the harbor on fire, burnt the boats, and put to the sword those who had taken refuge there.

7. Comme la place était fermée, il s'en alla, maisavec le dessein de revenir et de détruire toute lacité des Joppites.

7. When the gates of the town were shut, he withdrew, intending to come back later and wipe out the entire population of Joppa.

8. Ayant appris que ceux de Jamnia se proposaient aussi de traiterde la même manière les Juifs domiciliés chezeux,

8. On hearing that the men of Jamnia planned to give like treatment to the Jews who lived among them,

9. Judas attaqua de même pendant la nuit les habitants deJamnia et brûla le port avec les vaisseaux, en sorte que lalueur de l'incendie fut aperçue jusqu'àJérusalem, éloignée de deux cent quarantestades.

9. he attacked the Jamnian populace by night, setting fire to the harbor and the fleet, so that the glow of the flames was visible as far as Jerusalem, thirty miles away.

10. Comme ils s'étaient éloignés de làde neuf stades, marchant contre Timothée, des Arabestombèrent sur Judas, au nombre d'au moins cinq millehommes de pied et de cinq cents cavaliers.

10. When the Jews had gone about a mile from there in the campaign against Timothy, they were attacked by Arabs numbering at least five thousand foot soldiers, and five hundred horsemen.

11. Le combat fut acharné; mais, avec l'aide de Dieu, Judaset ses compagnons l'emportèrent; vaincus, les nomadesdemandèrent à Judas de leur tendre la main droite,promettant de lui donner du bétail et de lui êtreutiles en d'autres choses.

11. After a hard fight, Judas and his companions, with God's help, were victorious. The defeated nomads begged Judas to make friends with them and promised to supply the Jews with cattle and to help them in every other way.

12. Judas, persuadé qu'ils pouvaient en effet lui rendrebeaucoup de services, consentit à leur accorder la paixet, après qu'on se fut donné la main, ils seretirèrent sous leurs tentes.

12. Realizing that they could indeed be useful in many respects, Judas agreed to make peace with them. After the pledge of friendship had been exchanged, the Arabs withdrew to their tents.

13. Judas attaqua ensuite une ville forte, entourée deremparts avec des ponts-levis, et habitée par des hommesde diverses nations: elle s'appelait Caspin.

13. He also attacked a certain city called Caspin, fortified with earthworks and ramparts and inhabited by a mixed population of Gentiles.

14. Les assiégés, confiants dans la force de leursmurailles et bien pourvus de vivres, se montrèrentgrossiers, insultant Judas et ses compagnons, et proférantmène des blasphèmes et des paroles impies.

14. Relying on the strength of their walls and their supply of provisions, the besieged treated Judas and his men with contempt, insulting them and even uttering blasphemies and profanity.

15. Judas et les siens, après avoir invoqué lesouverain Maître du monde qui, au temps de Josué,renversa les tours de Jéricho sans béliers nimachines, se précipitèrent sur les murailles commedes lions furieux.

15. But Judas and his men invoked the aid of the great Sovereign of the world, who, in the day of Joshua, overthrew Jericho without battering-ram or siege machine; then they furiously stormed the ramparts.

16. Ayant pris la ville par la volonté du Seigneur, ils yfirent un immense carnage, au point que l'étang voisin,large de deux stades, semblait rempli du sang qui y avaitcoulé.

16. Capturing the city by the will of God, they inflicted such indescribable slaughter on it that the adjacent pool, which was about a quarter of a mile wide, seemed to be filled with the blood that flowed into it.

17. De là, par une marche de sept cent cinquante stades,ils atteignirent le Charax, où demeurent les Juifs quisont appelés Tubiens.

17. When they had gone on some ninety miles, they reached Charax, where there were certain Jews known as Toubiani.

18. Ils ne rencontrèrent pas Timothée en ceslieux-là; comme il n'avait rien pu y faire, il s'enétait allé, après avoir laissé en uncertain endroit une garnison très forte.

18. But they did not find Timothy in that region, for he had already departed from there without having done anything except to leave behind in one place a very strong garrison.

19. Mais deux des généraux de Machabée,Dosithée et Sosipater, allèrent attaquer cetteforteresse et tuèrent ceux que Timothée y avaitlaissés, au nombre de plus de dix mille hommes.

19. But Dositheus and Sosipater, two of Maccabeus' captains, marched out and destroyed the force of more than ten thousand men that Timothy had left in the stronghold.

20. De son côté, Machabée ayant rangéson armée par cohortes, leur donna le commandement de cescorps et s'avança contre Timothée, qui avait aveclui cent vingt mille fantassins et deux mille cinq centscavaliers.

20. Meanwhile, Maccabeus divided his army into cohorts, with a commander over each cohort, and went in pursuit of Timothy, who had a force of a hundred and twenty thousand foot soldiers and twenty-five hundred horsemen.

21. Informé de l'approche de Judas, Timothée fitdiriger les femmes, les enfants et leur avoir vers le lieunommé Carnion; car c'était un endroit inexpugnableet d'accès difficile, à cause des passesétroites de toute la contrée.

21. When Timothy learned of the approach of Judas, he sent on ahead of him the women and children, as well as the baggage, to a place called Karnion, which was hard to besiege and even hard to reach because of the difficult terrain of that region.

22. Dès que la première cohorte de Judas parut,l'épouvante s'empara des ennemis; car la puissance deCelui qui voit tout se manifestait à eux d'unemanière effrayante, et ils prirent la fuite les uns d'uncôté, les autres de l'autre, de telle sorte qu'ilsse faisaient de mutuelles blessures et se transperçaientde leurs propres épées.

22. But when Judas' first cohort appeared, the enemy was overwhelmed with fear and terror at the manifestation of the All-seeing. Scattering in every direction, they rushed away in such headlong flight that in many cases they wounded one another, pierced by the swords of their own men.

23. Judas les poursuivit avec acharnement, frappant tous ceshommes criminels, et il en fit périr jusqu'à trentemille.

23. Judas pressed the pursuit vigorously, putting the sinners to the sword and destroying as many as thirty thousand men.

24. Timothée, étant tombé lui-mêmeentre les mains des soldats de Dosithée et de Sosipaterles conjura avec beaucoup d'astuce de le laisser partir sain etsauf, affirmant qu'il tenait en son pouvoir les parents et lesfrères de beaucoup d'entre eux et, que s'il mourrait, ilsne seraient pas épargnés.

24. Timothy himself fell into the hands of the men under Dositheus and Sosipater; but with great cunning, he asked them to spare his life and let him go, because he had in his power the parents and relatives of many of them, and could make these suffer.

25. Il les assura par de longs discours qu'il étaitrésolu à renvoyer ces hommes sans leur faire aucunmal, si bien que les Juifs le relâchèrent peursauver leurs frères.

25. When he had fully confirmed his solemn pledge to restore them unharmed, they let him go for the sake of saving their brethren.

26. Cependant Judas marcha sur Carnion et le sanctuaired'Atargatis, où il tua vingt-cinq mille hommes.

26. Judas then marched to Karnion and the shrine of Atargatis, where he killed twenty-five thousand people.

27. Après avoir mis en déroute et exterminéces ennemis, Judas conduisit son armée contre Ephron,ville forte où habitait une multitude de diverses nations;de robustes jeunes gens rangés devant les murailles, lesdéfendaient vaillamment, et la ville mêmeétait pourvue d'une quantité de machines et detraits.

27. After the defeat and destruction of these, he moved his army to Ephron, a fortified city inhabited by people of many nationalities. Robust young men took up their posts in defense of the walls, from which they fought valiantly; inside were large supplies of machines and missiles.

28. Mais les Juifs, ayant invoqué le Tout-Puissant, Celuiqui brise par sa puissance les forces de l'ennemi, se rendirentmaîtres de la ville et couchèrent par terrevingt-cinq mille des hommes qui l'occupaient.

28. But the Jews, invoking the Sovereign who forcibly shatters the might of his enemies, got possession of the city and slaughtered twenty-five thousand of the people in it.

29. Partis de là, ils marchèrent contre la ville desScythes, à six cents stades de Jérusalem.

29. Then they set out from there and hastened on to Scythopolis, seventy-five miles from Jerusalem.

30. Mais les Juifs qui y résidaient ayanttémoigné qu'ils avaient ététraités avec bienveillance par les habitants, et que, dansles temps malheureux, ils en avaient reçu de bonsoffices,

30. But when the Jews who lived there testified to the good will shown by the Scythopolitans and to their kind treatment even in times of adversity,

31. Judas et les siens remercièrent les Scythopolitains etles exhortèrent à continuer dans la suite leurbienveillance envers ceux de leur race. Après quoi, ils rentrèrent àJérusalem, au moment où allait commencer lafête des Semaines.

31. Judas and his men thanked them and exhorted them to be well disposed to their race in the future also. Finally they arrived in Jerusalem, shortly before the feast of Weeks.

32. Après la Pentecôte, ils marchèrent contreGorgias, qui commandait dans l'Idumée.

32. After this feast called Pentecost, they lost no time in marching against Gorgias, governor of Idumea,

33. Celui-ci sortit, ayant avec lui trois mille fantassins etquatre cents cavaliers.

33. who opposed them with three thousand foot soldiers and four hundred horsemen.

34. On en vint aux mains, et il arriva qu'un petit nombre de Juifstombèrent.

34. In the ensuing battle, a few of the Jews were slain.

35. Un certain Dosithée, cavalier du corps deBacénor, homme vaillant, se saisit de Gorgias et, letirant par sa chlamyde, il l'entraînait vigoureusement,désirant prendre vivant cet homme maudit; mais un descavaliers Thraces se jetant sur Dosithée, lui tranchal'épaule, et Gorgias put s'enfuir àMarésa.

35. A man called Dositheus, a powerful horseman and one of Bacenor's men, caught hold of Gorgias, grasped his military cloak and dragged him along by main strength, intending to capture the vile wretch alive, when a Thracian horseman attacked Dositheus and cut off his arm at the shoulder. Then Gorgias fled to Marisa.

36. Cependant les hommes d'Esdrin combattaient depuis longtemps etse trouvaient épuisés de fatigue; alors Judassupplia le Seigneur de se montrer leur auxiliaire et leur chefdans le combat.

36. After Esdris and his men had been fighting for a long time and were weary, Judas called upon the Lord to show himself their ally and leader in the battle.

37. Puis entonnant à haute voix, dans la langue de sespères, le cri de guerre avec les hymnes, il tomba àl'improviste sur les hommes de Gorgias et les mit endéroute.

37. Then, raising a battle cry in his ancestral language, and with songs, he charged Gorgias' men when they were not expecting it and put them to flight.

38. Ensuite Judas, ayant rallié son armée, laconduisit à la ville d'Odollam, et, le septièmejour de la semaine étant arrivé, ils sepurifièrent selon la coutume etcélébrèrent le sabbat en ce lieu.

38. Judas rallied his army and went to the city of Adullam. As the week was ending, they purified themselves according to custom and kept the sabbath there.

39. Le jour suivant, Judas vint avec les siens, selon qu'ilétait nécessaire, relever les corps de ceux quiavaient été tués, pour les inhumer avecleurs proches dans les tombeaux de leurs pères.

39. On the following day, since the task had now become urgent, Judas and his men went to gather up the bodies of the slain and bury them with their kinsmen in their ancestral tombs.

40. Ils trouvèrent, sous les tuniques de chacun des morts,des objets consacrés, provenant des idoles de Jamnia etque la loi interdit aux Juifs; il fut donc évident pourtous que cela avait été la cause de leur mort.

40. But under the tunic of each of the dead they found amulets sacred to the idols of Jamnia, which the law forbids the Jews to wear. So it was clear to all that this was why these men had been slain.

41. Tous bénirent donc le Seigneur, juste juge qui rendmanifestes les choses cachées.

41. They all therefore praised the ways of the Lord, the just judge who brings to light the things that are hidden.

42. Puis ils se mirent en prières, demandant que lepéché commis fût entièrementpardonné; et le valeureux Judas exhorta le peuple àse garder pur de péché, ayant sous les yeux lesconséquences du péché de ceux quiétaient tombés.

42. Turning to supplication, they prayed that the sinful deed might be fully blotted out. The noble Judas warned the soldiers to keep themselves free from sin, for they had seen with their own eyes what had happened because of the sin of those who had fallen.

43. Puis, ayant fait une collecte où il recueillit la sommede deux mille drachmes, il l'envoya à Jérusalempour être employée à un sacrifice expiatoire.Belle et noble action, inspirée par la pensée de larésurrection!

43. He then took up a collection among all his soldiers, amounting to two thousand silver drachmas, which he sent to Jerusalem to provide for an expiatory sacrifice. In doing this he acted in a very excellent and noble way, inasmuch as he had the resurrection of the dead in view;

44. Car, s'il n'avait pas cru que les soldats tués dans labataille dussent ressusciter, c'eût été choseinutile et vaine de prier pour des morts.

44. for if he were not expecting the fallen to rise again, it would have been useless and foolish to pray for them in death.

45. Il considérait en outre qu'une très bellerécompense est réservée à ceux quis'endorment dans la piété,

45. But if he did this with a view to the splendid reward that awaits those who had gone to rest in godliness, it was a holy and pious thought.

46. et c'est là une pensée sainte et pieuse.Voilà pourquoi il fit ce sacrifice expiatoire pour lesmorts, afin qu'ils fussent délivrés de leurspéchés.

46. Thus he made atonement for the dead that they might be freed from this sin.
