Josué, 22

1. Alors Josué appela les Rubénites, les Gadites etla demi-tribu de Manassé, et il leur dit:

1. At that time Joshua summoned the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh

2. «Vous avez observé tout ce que vous a prescritMoïse, serviteur de Yahweh, et vous avez obéià ma voix en tout ce que je vous ai commandé.

2. and said to them: "You have done all that Moses, the servant of the LORD, commanded you, and have obeyed every command I gave you.

3. Vous n'avez pas abandonné vos frères durant celong espace de temps, jusqu'à ce jour, et vous avezfidèlement observé le commandement de Yahweh, votreDieu.

3. For many years now you have not once abandoned your kinsmen, but have faithfully carried out the commands of the LORD, your God.

4. Maintenant que Yahweh, votre Dieu, a donné du reposà vos frères, comme il le leur avait dit, retournezet allez-vous en vers vos tentes, dans le pays qui vousappartient, et que Moïse, serviteur de Yahweh, vous adonné de l'autre côté du Jourdain.

4. Since, therefore, the LORD, your God, has settled your kinsmen as he promised them, you may now return to your tents beyond the Jordan; to your own land, which Moses, the servant of the LORD, gave you.

5. Seulement ayez grand soin de mettre en pratique les ordonnanceset les lois que Moïse, serviteur de Yahweh, vous aprescrites, aimant Yahweh, votre Dieu, marchant dans toutes sesvoies, gardant ses commandements, vous attachant à lui etle servant de tout votre coeur et toute votreâme.»

5. But be very careful to observe the precept and law which Moses, the servant of the LORD, enjoined upon you: love the LORD, your God; follow him faithfully; keep his commandments; remain loyal to him; and serve him with your whole heart and soul."

6. Et Josué les bénit et les congédia; et ils'en allèrent vers leurs tentes.

6. Joshua then blessed them and sent them away to their own tents.

7. Moïse avait donné à une moitié de latribu de Manassé un territoire en Basan, et Josuédonna à l'autre moitié un territoire parmi sesfrères en deçà du Jourdain, àl'occident. En les renvoyant vers leurs tentes, Josué lesbénit,

7. (For, to half the tribe of Manasseh Moses had assigned land in Bashan; and to the other half Joshua had given a portion along with their kinsmen west of the Jordan.) What Joshua said to them when he sent them off to their tents with his blessing was,

8. et il leur dit: «Vous retournerez à vos tentesavec de grandes richesses, des troupeaux très nombreux etbeaucoup d'argent, d'or, d'airain, de fer et de vêtements;partagez avec vos frères les dépouilles de vosennemis.»

8. "Now that you are returning to your own tents with great wealth, with very numerous livestock, with silver, gold, bronze and iron, and with a very large supply of clothing, divide these spoils of your enemies with your kinsmen there."

9. Les fils de Ruben, les fils de Gad et la demi-tribu deManassé, ayant quitté les enfants d'Israëlà Silo, qui est dans le pays de Chanaan, s'enretournèrent pour aller dans le pays de Galaad, quiétait la propriété qu'ils avaientreçue, comme Yahweh l'avait ordonné parMoïse.

9. So the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh left the other Israelites at Shiloh in the land of Canaan and returned to the land of Gilead, their own property, which they had received according to the LORD'S command through Moses.

10. Quand ils furent arrivés aux districts du Jourdain quifont partie du pays de Chanaan, les fils de Ruben, les fils deGad et la demi-tribu de Manassé y bâtirent un autelau bord du Jourdain, un autel grand à voir.

10. When the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh came to the region of the Jordan in the land of Canaan, they built there at the Jordan a conspicuously large altar.

11. Les enfants d'Israël apprirent que l'on disait:«Voilà que les fils de Ruben, les fils de Gad et lademi-tribu de Manassé ont bâti un autel sur ledevant du pays de Chanaan, dans les districts du Jourdain, ducôté des enfants d'Israël.»

11. The other Israelites heard the report that the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh had built an altar in the region of the Jordan facing the land of Canaan, across from them,

12. Quand les enfants d'Israël l'eurent appris, toutel'assemblée des enfants d'Israël se réunità Silo, pour monter contre eux et leur faire laguerre.

12. and therefore they assembled their whole community at Shiloh to declare war on them.

13. Les enfants d'Israël envoyèrent auprès desfils de Ruben, des fils de Gad et de la demi-tribu deManassé, au pays de Galaad, Phinées, fils duprêtre Eléazar,

13. First, however, they sent to the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh in the land of Gilead an embassy consisting of Phinehas, son of Eleazar the priest,

14. et avec lui dix princes, un prince de maison patriarcale, pourchacune des tribus d'Israël: tous étaient chefs deleur maison patriarcale parmi les milliers d'Israël.

14. and ten princes, one from every tribe of Israel, each one being both prince and military leader of his ancestral house.

15. S'étant rendus auprès des fils de Ruben, desfils de Gad et de la demi-tribu de Manassé, au pays deGalaad, ils leur parlèrent en disant:

15. When these came to the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh in the land of Gilead, they said to them:

16. «Ainsi parle toute l'assemblée de Yahweh: Quelleinfidélité avez-vous commise envers le Dieud'Israël, de vous détourner aujourd'hui de Yahweh envous bâtissant un autel pour vous révolteraujourd'hui contre Yahweh?

16. "The whole community of the LORD sends this message: What act of treachery is this you have committed against the God of Israel? You have seceded from the LORD this day, and rebelled against him by building an altar of your own!

17. N'est-ce pas assez pour nous que le crime de Phogor, dont nousne nous sommes pas encore purifiés jusqu'à ce jour,malgré la plaie qui frappa l'assemblée deYahweh,

17. For the sin of Peor, a plague came upon the community of the LORD.

18. pour que vous vous détourniez aujourd'hui de Yahweh? Sivous vous révoltez aujourd'hui contre Yahweh, demain ils'irritera contre toute l'assemblée d'Israël.

18. We are still not free of that; must you now add to it? You are rebelling against the LORD today and by tomorrow he will be angry with the whole community of Israel!

19. Que si vous regardez comme impur le pays qui est en votrepossession, passez dans le pays qui est la possession de Yahweh,où est fixée la demeure de Yahweh, etétablissez-vous au milieu de nous; mais ne vousrévoltez pas contre Yahweh et ne vous révoltez pascontre nous, en vous bâtissant un autel outre l'autel deYahweh, notre Dieu.

19. If you consider the land you now possess unclean, cross over to the land the LORD possesses, where the Dwelling of the LORD stands, and share that with us. But do not rebel against the LORD, nor involve us in rebellion, by building an altar of your own in addition to the altar of the LORD, our God.

20. Achan, fils de Zaré, ne commit-il pas uneinfidélité au sujet des choses vouées paranathème, et la colère de Yahweh n'a-t-elle paséclaté sur toute l'assemblée d'Israël?Et il ne fut pas le seul qui périt à cause de soncrime.»

20. When Achan, son of Zerah, violated the ban, did not wrath fall upon the entire community of Israel? Though he was but a single man, he did not perish alone for his guilt!"

21. Les fils de Ruben, les fils de Gad et la demi-tribu deManassé répondirent et dirent aux chefs desmilliers d'Israël:

21. The Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh replied to the military leaders of the Israelites: "The LORD is the God of gods.

22. «Le Tout-Puissant, Dieu, Yahweh, le Tout-Puissant, Dieu,Yahweh le sait, et Israël le saura! Si c'est parrébellion et par infidélité envers Yahweh,ô Dieu, ne nous sauvez point en ce jour!...

22. The LORD, the God of gods, knows and Israel shall know. If now we have acted out of rebellion or treachery against the LORD, our God,

23. Que si nous nous sommes bâti un autel, pour nousdétourner de Yahweh, et si c'est pour y offrir desholocaustes et des oblations, pour y faire des sacrificespacifiques; que Yahweh nous en demande compte!

23. and if we have built an altar of our own to secede from the LORD, or to offer holocausts, grain offerings or peace offerings upon it, the LORD himself will exact the penalty.

24. Et si ce n'est pas par crainte de ce qui arriverait que nousavons fait cela, nous disant: Vos fils diront un jour ànos fils: Qu'y a-t-il de commun entre vous et Yahweh, le Dieud'Israël?

24. We did it rather out of our anxious concern lest in the future your children should say to our children: 'What have you to do with the LORD, the God of Israel?

25. Yahweh a mis le Jourdain comme limite entre nous et vous, filsde Ruben et fils de Gad; vous n'avez point de part àYahweh. -- Ainsi vos fils seraient cause que nos fils cesseraientde craindre Yahweh.

25. For the LORD has placed the Jordan as a boundary between you and us. You descendants of Reuben and Gad have no share in the LORD.' Thus your children would prevent ours from revering the LORD.

26. Et nous nous sommes dit: Mettons-nous à bâtir unautel, non pour des holocaustes et pour des sacrifices;

26. So we decided to guard our interests by building this altar of our own: not for holocausts or for sacrifices,

27. mais afin qu'ils soit un témoin entre nous et vous, etnos descendants après nous, que nous servons Yahweh devantsa face par nos holocaustes, par nos sacrifices et nos victimespacifiques, afin que vos fils ne disent pas un jour à nosfils: Vous n'avez point de part à Yahweh.

27. but as evidence for you on behalf of ourselves and our descendants, that we have the right to worship the LORD in his presence with our holocausts, sacrifices, and peace offerings. Now in the future your children cannot say to our children, 'You have no share in the LORD.'

28. Nous avons dit: Si un jour ils parlaient ainsi à nousou à nos descendants, nous leur répondrions: Voyezla forme de l'autel de Yahweh que nos pères ont construit,non pour servir à des holocaustes et à dessacrifices, mais pour être un témoin entre nous etvous.

28. Our thought was, that if in the future they should speak thus to us or to our descendants, we could answer: 'Look at the model of the altar of the LORD which our fathers made, not for holocausts or for sacrifices, but to witness between you and us.'

29. Loin de nous de vouloir nous révolter contre Yahweh etnous détourner aujourd'hui de Yahweh, en bâtissantun autel pour des holocaustes, pour des oblations et pour dessacrifices, outre l'autel de Yahweh, notre Dieu, qui est devantsa demeure!»

29. Far be it from us to rebel against the LORD or to secede now from the LORD by building an altar for holocaust, grain offering, or sacrifice in addition to the altar of the LORD, our God, which stands before his Dwelling."

30. Lorsque le prêtre Phinées et les princes del'assemblée, chefs des milliers d'Israël, quiétaient avec lui, eurent entendu les paroles queprononcèrent les fils de Ruben, les fils de Gad et lesfils de Manassé, ils furent satisfaits.

30. When Phinehas the priest and the princes of the community, the military leaders of the Israelites, heard what the Reubenites, the Gadites and the Manassehites had to say, they were satisfied.

31. Et Phinées, fils du prêtre Eléazar, ditaux fils de Ruben, aux fils de Gad et aux fils de Manassé:«Nous reconnaissons maintenant que Yahweh est au milieu denous, puisque vous n'avez pas commis cetteinfidélité envers Yahweh; vous avez ainsidélivré les enfants d'Israël de la main deYahweh!»

31. Phinehas, son of Eleazar the priest, said to the Reubenites, the Gadites and the Manassehites, "Now we know that the LORD is with us. Since you have not committed this act of treachery against the LORD, you have kept the Israelites free from punishment by the LORD."

32. Phinées, fils du prêtre Eléazar, et lesprinces quittèrent les fils de Ruben et les fils de Gad,et revinrent du pays de Galaad dans le pays de Chanaan, vers lesenfants d'Israël, auxquels ils firent leur rapport.

32. Phinehas, son of Eleazar the priest, and the princes returned from the Reubenites and the Gadites in the land of Gilead to the Israelites in the land of Canaan, and reported the matter to them.

33. La chose plut aux enfants d'Israël; ils bénirentDieu et ne parlèrent plus de monter en armes contre eux,pour dévaster le pays qu'habitaient les fils de Ruben etles fils de Gad.

33. The report satisfied the Israelites, who blessed God and decided against declaring war on the Reubenites and Gadites or ravaging the land they occupied.

34. Les fils de Ruben et les fils de Gad appelèrent l'autelEd, car, dirent-ils, il est témoin entre nous que Yahwehest le vrai Dieu.

34. The Reubenites and the Gadites gave the altar its name as a witness among them that the LORD is God.
