Chapter 3 of 2 Samuel describes the long struggle between Saul's house and David's house for Israel's control. Abner, the commander of Saul's army, refuses to submit to David after Saul's death, and chooses a new king to Israel, Is-Boste, son of Saul. However, the war between the two houses continues, and Abner is eventually killed by Joab, the commander of the Army of David.
