1. Jacob entendit les propos des fils de Laban, qui disaient : " Jacob a pris tout ce qui était à notre père, et c'est avec le bien de notre père qu'il s'est fait toute cette richesse. "

1. Jacob learned that Laban's sons were saying, "Jacob has taken everything that belonged to our father, and he has accumulated all this wealth of his by using our father's property."

2. Jacob remarqua aussi le visage de Laban, et voici, il n'était plus à son égard comme auparavant.

2. Jacob perceived, too, that Laban's attitude toward him was not what it had previously been.

3. Et Yahweh dit à Jacob : " Retourne au pays de tes pères et au lieu de ta naissance, et je serai avec toi. "

3. Then the LORD said to Jacob, "Return to the land of your fathers, where you were born, and I will be with you."

4. Alors Jacob fit dire à Rachel et à Lia devenir le trouver aux champs, où il fai­sait paître son troupeau.

4. So Jacob sent for Rachel and Leah to meet him where he was in the field with his flock.

5. Il leur dit " Je vois que le visage de votre père n'est plus le même envers moi qu'aupa­ravant ; or le Dieu de mon père a été avec moi.

5. There he said to them: "I have noticed that your father's attitude toward me is not as it was in the past; but the God of my father has been with me.

6. Vous savez vous-mêmes que j'ai servi votre père de tout mon pouvoir ; et votre père s'est joué de moi, changeant dix fois mon salaire;

6. You well know what effort I put into serving your father;

7. mais Dieu ne lui a pas permis de me causer du préjudice.

7. yet your father cheated me and changed my wages time after time. God, however, did not let him do me any harm.

8. Quand il disait : Les bêtes tachetées seront ton salaire, toutes les brebis fai­saient des agneaux tachetés. Et s'il di­sait : Les bêtes rayées seront ton salaire, toutes les brebis faisaient des agneaux rayés.

8. Whenever your father said, 'The speckled animals shall be your wages,' the entire flock would bear speckled young; whenever he said, 'The streaked animals shall be your wages,' the entire flock would bear streaked young.

9. Dieu a donc pris le bétail de votre père et me l'a donné.

9. Thus God reclaimed your father's livestock and gave it to me.

10. Au temps où les brebis entrent en chaleur, je levai les yeux et je vis en songe que les béliers qui couvraient les brebis étaient rayés, tachetés et marquetés.

10. Once, in the breeding season, I had a dream in which I saw mating he-goats that were streaked, speckled and mottled.

11. Et un ange de Dieu me dit en songe : Jacob ! Je répon­dis : Me voici.

11. In the dream God's messenger called to me, 'Jacob!' 'Here!' I replied.

12. Et il dit : Lève les yeux et regarde : tous les béliers qui couvrent les brebis sont rayés, tachetés et mar­quetés ; car j'ai vu tout ce que t'a fait Laban.

12. Then he said: 'Note well. All the he-goats in the flock, as they mate, are streaked, speckled and mottled, for I have seen all the things that Laban has been doing to you.

13. Je suis le Dieu de Béthel, où tu as oint un monument, où tu m'as fait un voeu Maintenant lève-toi, sors de ce pays et retourne au pays de ta nais­sance. "

13. I am the God who appeared to you in Bethel, where you anointed a memorial stone and made a vow to me. Up, then! Leave this land and return to the land of your birth.'"

14. Rachel et Lia répondirent en disant : " Est-ce que nous avons encore une part et un héritage dans la maison de notre père?

14. Rachel and Leah answered him: "Have we still an heir's portion in our father's house?

15. Ne sommes-nous pas regardées par lui comme des étrangères, puisqu'il nous a vendues et qu'il mange notre argent?

15. Are we not regarded by him as outsiders? He not only sold us; he has even used up the money that he got for us!

16. D'ailleurs tout le bien que Dieu a enlevé à notre père, nous l'avons, nous et nos en­fants. Fais donc maintenant ce que Dieu t'a ordonné. "

16. All the wealth that God reclaimed from our father really belongs to us and our children. Therefore, do just as God has told you."

17. Jacob se leva et fit monter ses enfants et ses femmes sur les chameaux.

17. Jacob proceeded to put his children and wives on camels,

18. Il emmena tout son troupeau et tout le bien qu'il avait acquis, le troupeau qu'il possé­dait, qu'il avait acquis à Paddan-Aram; et il s'en alla vers Isaac, son père, au pays de Chanaan.

18. and he drove off with all his livestock and all the property he had acquired in Paddan-aram, to go to his father Isaac in the land of Canaan.

19. Comme Laban était allé tondre ses brebis, Rachel déroba les théraphim de son père.

19. Now Laban had gone away to shear his sheep, and Rachel had meanwhile appropriated her father's household idols.

20. Et Jacob trompa Laban, l'Araméen, en ne l'informant pas de sa fuite.

20. Jacob had hoodwinked Laban the Aramean by not telling him of his intended flight.

21. Il s'enfuit, lui et tout ce qui lui appartenait et, s'étant levé, il traversa le fleuve et se dirigea vers la montagne de Galaad.

21. Thus he made his escape with all that he had. Once he was across the Euphrates, he headed for the highlands of Gilead.

22. Le troisième jour, on annonça à Laban que Jacob s'était enfui.

22. On the third day, word came to Laban that Jacob had fled.

23. Il prit avec lui ses frères et le poursuivit pendant sept journées de chemin ; il l'atteignit à la montagne de Galaad.

23. Taking his kinsmen with him, he pursued him for seven days until he caught up with him in the hill country of Gilead.

24. Et Dieu vint en songe, de nuit, vers Laban l'Araméen, et il lui dit : " Garde-toi de rien dire à Jacob, ni en bien ni en mal."

24. But that night God appeared to Laban the Aramean in a dream and warned him, "Take care not to threaten Jacob with any harm!"

25. Laban attei­gnit donc Jacob. - Jacob avait dressé sa tente sur la montagne, et Laban avait aussi dressé la sienne, avec ses frères, sur la montagne de Galaad.

25. When Laban overtook Jacob, Jacob's tents were pitched in the highlands; Laban also pitched his tents there, on Mount Gilead.

26. Laban dit à Jacob : " Qu'as-tu fait? tu as abusé mon esprit et tu as emmené mes filles comme des captives prises par l'épée?

26. "What do you mean," Laban demanded of Jacob, "by hoodwinking me and carrying off my daughters like war captives?

27. Pourquoi as-tu pris secrètement la fuite et m'as-tu trompé, au lieu de m'avertir, moi qui t'aurais laissé allé dans l'allégresse des chants, au son du tabourin et de la harpe?

27. Why did you dupe me by stealing away secretly? You should have told me, and I would have sent you off with merry singing to the sound of tambourines and harps.

28. Tu ne m'as pas laissé em­brasser mes fils et mes filles ! Vraiment tu as agi en insensé.

28. You did not even allow me a parting kiss to my daughters and grandchildren! What you have now done is a senseless thing.

29. Ma main est assez forte pour vous faire du mal; mais le Dieu de votre père m'a parlé cette nuit en disant : Garde-toi de rien dire à Jacob, ni en bien ni en mal.

29. I have it in my power to harm all of you; but last night the God of your father said to me, 'Take care not to threaten Jacob with any harm!'

30. Et maintenant, tu es parti parce que tu languissais après la maison de ton père ; mais, pourquoi as-tu dérobé mes dieux? "

30. Granted that you had to leave because you were desperately homesick for your father's house, why did you steal my gods?"

31. Jacob répondit et dit à Laban : " C'est que j'avais de la crainte, en me disant que peut-être tu m'enlèverais tes filles.

31. "I was frightened," Jacob replied to Laban, "at the thought that you might take your daughters away from me by force.

32. Quant à celui chez qui tu trouveras tes dieux, il ne vivra pas ! En présence de nos frères, reconnais ce qui t'appartient chez moi et prends-le. "

32. But as for your gods, the one you find them with shall not remain alive! If, with my kinsmen looking on, you identify anything here as belonging to you, take it." Jacob, of course, had no idea that Rachel had stolen the idols.

33. - Or Jacob ignorait que Rachel les eût dérobés.- Laban entra dans la tente de Jacob, dans la tente de Lia et dans la tente des deux servantes, et il ne trouva rien. Puis il sortit de la tente de Lia et entra dans la tente de Rachel.

33. Laban then went in and searched Jacob's tent and Leah's tent, as well as the tents of the two maidservants; but he did not find the idols. Leaving Leah's tent, he went into Rachel's.

34. Rachel avait pris les théraphim, les avait mis dans la selle du chameau et s'était assise dessus. Laban fouilla toute la tente, sans rien trouver.

34. Now Rachel had taken the idols, put them inside a camel cushion, and seated herself upon them. When Laban had rummaged through the rest of her tent without finding them,

35. Et Rachel dit à son père : " Que mon seigneur ne s'ir­rite point de ce que je ne puis me lever devant toi, car j'ai ce qui est ordinaire aux femmes." Il chercha, mais ne trouva pas les théraphim.

35. Rachel said to her father, "Let not my lord feel offended that I cannot rise in your presence; a woman's period is upon me." So, despite his search, he did not find his idols.

36. Jacob se mit en colère et adressa des reproches à Laban; et Jacob prit la pa­role et dit à Laban : " Quel est mon crime, quelle est ma faute, que tu t'a­charnes après moi?

36. Jacob, now enraged, upbraided Laban. "What crime or offense have I committed," he demanded, "that you should hound me so fiercely?

37. Quand tu as fouillé tous mes effets, qu'as-tu trouvé des effets de ta maison? Produis-le ici de­vant mes frères et tes frères, et qu'ils soient juges entre nous deux.

37. Now that you have ransacked all my things, have you found a single object taken from your belongings? If so, produce it here before your kinsmen and mine, and let them decide between us two.

38. Voilà vingt ans que j'ai passés chez toi ; tes brebis et tes chèvres n'ont pas avorté, et je n'ai pas mangé les béliers de ton troupeau.

38. "In the twenty years that I was under you, no ewe or she-goat of yours ever miscarried, and I have never feasted on a ram of your flock.

39. Ce qui était déchiré par les bêtes sauvages, je ne te l'ai pas rapporté; c'est moi qui en ai supporté la perte. Tu me réclamais ce qui avait été dérobé de jour et ce qui avait été dérobé de nuit.

39. I never brought you an animal torn by wild beasts; I made good the loss myself. You held me responsible for anything stolen by day or night.

40. J'étais dévoré le jour par la chaleur, et la nuit par le froid, et mon sommeil fuyait de mes yeux.

40. How often the scorching heat ravaged me by day, and the frost by night, while sleep fled from my eyes!

41. Voilà vingt ans que je suis dans ta maison ; je t'ai servi quatorze ans pour tes deux filles et six ans pour ton bétail, et tu as changé mon salaire dix fois.

41. Of the twenty years that I have now spent in your household, I slaved fourteen years for your two daughters and six years for your flock, while you changed my wages time after time.

42. Si le Dieu de mon père, le Dieu d'Abraham et la Terreur d'Isaac n'eût pas été pour moi, tu m'aurais maintenant laissé partir à vide. Dieu a vu ma souffrance et le tra­vail de mes mains, et cette nuit il a jugé entre nous. "

42. If my ancestral God, the God of Abraham and the Awesome One of Isaac, had not been on my side, you would now have sent me away empty-handed. But God saw my plight and the fruits of my toil, and last night he gave judgment."

43. Laban répondit et dit à Jacob. " Ces filles sont mes filles, ces enfants mes enfants, ces troupeaux mes troupeaux, et tout ce que tu vois est â moi. Que ferais-je aujourd'hui à rues filles, à elles et aux fils qu'elles ont enfantés?

43. Laban replied to Jacob: "The women are mine, their children are mine, and the flocks are mine; everything you see belongs to me. But since these women are my daughters, I will now do something for them and for the children they have borne.

44. Maintenant donc, viens, faisons alliance, moi et toi, et qu'il y ait un témoin entre moi et toi.

44. Come, then, we will make a pact, you and I; the LORD shall be a witness between us."

45. Jacob prit une pierre et la dressa pour monument.

45. Then Jacob took a stone and set it up as a memorial stone.

46. Et Jacob dit à ses frères : " Amassez des pierres. " Ils pri­rent des pierres et en firent un monceau, et ils mangèrent là sur le monceau.

46. Jacob said to his kinsmen, "Gather some stones." So they got some stones and made a mound; and they had a meal there at the mound.

47. Laban l'appela Yegar-Sahadutha, et Jacob l'appela Galaad.

47. Laban called it Jegar-sahadutha, but Jacob named it Galeed.

48. Et Laban dit : " Ce monceau est témoin entre moi et toi aujourd'hui. "C'est pourquoi on lui donna le nom de Galaad,

48. "This mound," said Laban, "shall be a witness from now on between you and me." That is why it was named Galeed--

49. et aussi celui de Mitspa, parce que Laban dit : " Que Yahweh nous surveille, moi et toi, quand nous serons séparés l'un de l'autre.

49. and also Mizpah, for he said: "May the LORD keep watch between you and me when we are out of each other's sight.

50. Si tu maltraites mes filles et si tu prends d'au­tres femmes à côté de mes filles, ce n'est pas un homme qui sera avec nous ; mais, prends-y garde, c'est Dieu qui sera témoin entre moi et toi. "

50. If you mistreat my daughters, or take other wives besides my daughters, remember that even though no one else is about, God will be witness between you and me."

51. Laban dit encore à Jacob : " Voici ce monceau et voici le monument que j'ai dressé entre moi et toi.

51. Laban said further to Jacob: "Here is this mound, and here is the memorial stone that I have set up between you and me.

52. Ce monceau est témoin et ce monument est témoin que je n'avancerai pas vers toi au delà de ce monceau, et que tu n'avanceras pas vers moi au delà de ce monceau et de ce monument, pour faire du mal.

52. This mound shall be witness, and this memorial stone shall be witness, that, with hostile intent, neither may I pass beyond this mound into your territory, nor may you pass beyond it into mine.

53. Que le Dieu d'Abraham, le Dieu de Nachor et le Dieu de leurs pères soient juges entre nous! " Et Jacob jura par la Terreur d'Isaac.

53. May the God of Abraham and the god of Nahor (their ancestral deities) maintain justice between us!" Jacob took the oath by the Awesome One of Isaac.

54. Et Jacob offrit un sacrifice sur la montagne, et il invita ses frères au repas. Ils mangèrent donc et passèrent la nuit sur la montagne.

54. He then offered a sacrifice on the mountain and invited his kinsmen to share in the meal. When they had eaten, they passed the night on the mountain.
