1. Il v eut une famine dans le pays, outre la première famine qui avait eu lieu du temps d'Abraham ; et Isaac alla à Gérare, vers Abimélech, roi dés Philistins.
1. There was a famine in the land (distinct from the earlier one that had occurred in the days of Abraham), and Isaac went down to Abimelech, king of the Philistines in Gerar.
2. Yahweh lui apparut et dit : " Ne descends point en Egypte, mais demeure dans le pays que je te dirai.
2. The LORD appeared to him and said: "Do not go down to Egypt, but continue to camp wherever in this land I tell you.
3. Séjourne dans ce pays-ci ; je serai avec toi et je te bénirai, car je donnerai toutes ces contrées à toi et à ta postérité, et je tiendrai le serment que j'ai fait à Abraham, ton père.
3. Stay in this land, and I will be with you and bless you; for to you and your descendants I will give all these lands, in fulfillment of the oath that I swore to your father Abraham.
4. Je multiplierai ta postérité comme les étoiles du ciel, et je donnerai à ta postérité toutes ces contrées, et en ta postérité seront bénies toutes les nations de la terre,
4. I will make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and give them all these lands, and in your descendants all the nations of the earth shall find blessing--
5. parce qu'Abraham a obéi à ma voix et a gardé mon ordre, mes commandements, mes statuts et mes lois. "
5. this because Abraham obeyed me, keeping my mandate (my commandments, my ordinances, and my instructions)."
6. Isaac demeura donc à Gérare.
6. So Isaac settled in Gerar.
7. Les gens du lieu le questionnaient sur sa femme, il disait : " C'est ma s?ur " ; car il craignait de dire : " Ma femme ", de peur, pensait-il, que les gens du lieu ne me tuent à cause de Rebecca ", car elle était belle de figure.
7. When the men of the place asked questions about his wife, he answered, "She is my sister." He was afraid, if he called her his wife, the men of the place would kill him on account of Rebekah, since she was very beautiful.
8. Comme son séjour à Gérare se prolongeait, il arriva qu'Abimélech, roi des Philistins, regardant par la fenêtre, aperçut Isaac qui faisait des caresses à Rebecca, sa femme.
8. But when he had been there for a long time, Abimelech, king of the Philistines, happened to look out of a window and was surprised to see Isaac fondling his wife Rebekah.
9. Abimélech appela Isaac et dit: " Elle ne peut être que ta femme ; comment as-tu dit : C'est ma soeur? " Isaac lui répondit : " C'est que je me disais : je crains de mourir à cause d'elle. "
9. He called for Isaac and said: "She must certainly be your wife! How could you have said, 'She is my sister'?" Isaac replied, "I thought I might lose my life on her account."
10. Et Abimélech dit : " Qu'est-ce que tu nous as fait ? Car peu s'en est fallu qu'un homme du peuple couche avec ta femme, et tu aurais fait venir sur nous un péché. "
10. "How could you do this to us!" exclaimed Abimelech. "It would have taken very little for one of the men to lie with your wife, and you would have thus brought guilt upon us!"
11. Alors Abimélech donna cet ordre à tout le peuple : " Celui qui Touchera cet homme ou sa femme sera mis à mort. "
11. Abimelech therefore gave this warning to all his men: "Anyone who molests this man or his wife shall forthwith be put to death."
12. Isaac fit des semailles dans ce pays, et il recueillit cette année-là le centuple.
12. Isaac sowed a crop in that region and reaped a hundredfold the same year. Since the LORD blessed him,
13. Yahweh le bénit ; et cet homme devint riche, et il alla s'enrichissant de plus en plus, jusqu'à devenir très riche.
13. he became richer and richer all the time, until he was very wealthy indeed.
14. Il avait des troupeaux de menu bétail et des troupeaux de gros bétail et beaucoup de serviteurs, et les Philistins lui portèrent envie.
14. He acquired such flocks and herds, and so many work animals, that the Philistines became envious of him.
15. Tous les puits qu'avaient creusés les serviteurs de son père, du temps de son père Abraham, les Philistins les bouchèrent, en les remplissant de terre.
15. (The Philistines had stopped up and filled with dirt all the wells that his father's servants had dug back in the days of his father Abraham.)
16. Et Abimélech dit à Isaac: "Va-t'en de chez nous, car tu es devenu beaucoup plus puissant que nous. "
16. So Abimelech said to Isaac, "Go away from us; you have become far too numerous for us."
17. Isaac s'en alla et, ayant établi son campement dans la vallée de Gérare, il y demeura.
17. Isaac left there and made the Wadi Gerar his regular campsite.
18. Isaac creusa de nouveau les puits d'eau qu'on avait creusés du temps d'Abraham, son père, et que les Philistins avaient bouchés après la mort d'Abraham, et il leur donna les mêmes noms que son père leur avait donnés.
18. (Isaac reopened the wells which his father's servants had dug back in the days of his father Abraham and which the Philistines had stopped up after Abraham's death; he gave them the same names that his father had given them.)
19. Les serviteurs d' Isaac creusèrent encore dans la vallée et y trouvèrent un puits d'eau vive.
19. But when Isaac's servants dug in the wadi and reached spring water in their well,
20. Et les bergers de Gérare se querellèrent avec les bergers d'Isaac, en disant : " L'eau est à nous. "
20. the shepherds of Gerar quarreled with Isaac's servants, saying, "The water belongs to us!" So the well was called Esek, because they had challenged him there.
21. Et il nomma le puits Eseq, parce qu'ils avaient eu un débat avec lui. Ses serviteurs creusèrent un autre puits, au sujet duquel il y eut encore une querelle, et il le nomma Sitna.
21. Then they dug another well, and they quarreled over that one too; so it was called Sitnah.
22. Étant parti de là, il creusa un autre puits, pour lequel il n'y eut plus de querelle, et il le nomma Rechoboth " Car maintenant, dit-il, Yahweh nous a mis au large, et nous prospérerons dans le pays. "
22. When he had moved on from there, he dug still another well; but over this one they did not quarrel. It was called Rehoboth, because he said, "The LORD has now given us ample room, and we shall flourish in the land."
23. De là, il remonta à Bersabée.
23. From there Isaac went up to Beer-sheba.
24. Yahweh lui apparut cette nuit-là et dit : " Je suis le Dieu d'Abraham, ton père; ne crains point, car je suis avec toi; je te bénirai et je multiplierai ta postérité, à cause d'Abraham, mon serviteur. "
24. The same night the LORD appeared to him and said: "I am the God of your father Abraham. You have no need to fear, since I am with you. I will bless you and multiply your descendants for the sake of my servant Abraham."
25. Il éleva là un autel et invoqua le nom de Yahweh, puis il y dressa sa tente; et les serviteurs d'Isaac y creusèrent un puits.
25. So he built an altar there and invoked the LORD by name. After he had pitched his tent there, his servants began to dig a well nearby.
26. Abimélech vint vers lui, de Gérare, avec Ochozath, son ami, et Phicol, chef de son armée.
26. Abimelech had meanwhile come to him from Gerar, accompanied by Ahuzzath, his councilor, and Phicol, the general of his army.
27. Isaac leur dit : " Pourquoi êtes-vous venus vers moi, vous qui nie haïssez et qui m'avez renvoyé de chez vous? "
27. Isaac asked them, "Why have you come to me, seeing that you hate me and have driven me away from you?"
28. Ils répondirent: " Nous avons vu clairement que Yahweh est avec toi, et nous avons dit : Qu'il y ait un serment entre nous, entre nous et toi, et que nous fassions une alliance avec toi.
28. They answered: "We are convinced that the LORD is with you, so we propose that there be a sworn agreement between our two sides--between you and us. Let us make a pact with you:
29. Jure de ne pas nous faire de mal, de même que nous ne t'avons pas touché, et que nous ne t'avons fait que du bien, et t'avons laissé partir en paix. Tu es maintenant le béni de Yahweh. "
29. you shall not act unkindly toward us, just as we have not molested you, but have always acted kindly toward you and have let you depart in peace. Henceforth, 'The LORD'S blessing be upon you!'"
30. Isaac leur fit un festin, et ils mangèrent et burent.
30. Isaac then made a feast for them, and they ate and drank.
31. Et, s'étant levés de bon matin, ils se prêtèrent serment l'un à l'autre ; puis Isaac les congédia et ils s'en allèrent de chez lui en paix.
31. Early the next morning they exchanged oaths. Then Isaac bade them farewell, and they departed from him in peace.
32. Ce même jour, les serviteurs d'Isaac vinrent lui apporter des nouvelles du puits qu'ils Creusaient; lis lui dirent " Nous avons trouvé de l'eau. "
32. That same day Isaac's servants came and brought him news about the well they had been digging; they told him, "We have reached water!"
33. Et il appela le puits Schibéa. C'est pour cela que la ville se nomme Bersabée jusqu'à ce jour.
33. He called it Shibah; hence the name of the city, Beer-sheba, to this day.
34. Esaü, âgé de quarante ans, prit pour femmes Judith, fille de Bééri, le Héthéen, et Basemath, fille d'Elon, le Héthéen.
34. When Esau was forty years old, he married Judith, daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and Basemath, daughter of Elon the Hivite.
35. Elles furent un sujet d'amertume pour Isaac et Rebecca.
35. But they became a source of embitterment to Isaac and Rebekah.
