Mark, 14
1. After two days was [the feast of] the passover, and of unleavened bread: and the chief priests and the scribes sought how they might take him by craft, and put [him] to death.
1. It was now two days before the feast of the Passover and Unleavened Bread. The chief priests and the teachers of the Law were looking craftily for a way to arrest Jesus and put him to death;
2. But they said, Not on the feast [day], lest there be an uproar of the people.
2. for they said, "Not during the Festival, or there might be trouble among the people."
3. And being in Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, as he sat at meat, there came a woman having an alabaster box of ointment of spikenard very precious; and she brake the box, and poured [it] on his head.
3. Jesus was in Bethany in the house of Simon the leper. As he was reclining at dinner, a woman entered carrying a precious jar of expensive perfume made of pure nard. She broke the jar and poured the perfumed oil on Jesus' head.
4. And there were some that had indignation within themselves, and said, Why was this waste of the ointment made?
4. Then some of them became angry and said, "What a useless waste of perfume.
5. For it might have been sold for more than three hundred pence, and have been given to the poor. And they murmured against her.
5. It could have been sold for more than three hundred silver coins and the money given to the poor." And they criticized her.
6. And Jesus said, Let her alone; why trouble ye her? she hath wrought a good work on me.
6. But Jesus said, "Let her alone; why are you troubling her? What she has just done for me is a very charitable work.
7. For ye have the poor with you always, and whensoever ye will ye may do them good: but me ye have not always.
7. At any time you can help the poor, for you always have them with you, but you will not have me forever.
8. She hath done what she could: she is come aforehand to anoint my body to the burying.
8. This woman has done what was hers to do, she has anointed my body beforehand for my burial.
9. Verily I say unto you, Wheresoever this gospel shall be preached throughout the whole world, [this] also that she hath done shall be spoken of for a memorial of her.
9. Truly, I say to you, wherever the Good News is proclaimed, and this will be throughout the world, what she has done will be told in praise of her."
10. And Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve, went unto the chief priests, to betray him unto them.
10. Then Judas Iscariot, one of the Twelve, went off to the chief priests in order to betray Jesus to them.
11. And when they heard [it], they were glad, and promised to give him money. And he sought how he might conveniently betray him.
11. On hearing him they were excited and promised to give him money. So Judas started planning the best way to hand him over to them.
12. And the first day of unleavened bread, when they killed the passover, his disciples said unto him, Where wilt thou that we go and prepare that thou mayest eat the passover?
12. On the first day of the Festival of Unleavened Bread, the day when the Passover Lamb was killed, the disciples asked him, "Where would you have us go to prepare the Passover meal for you?"
13. And he sendeth forth two of his disciples, and saith unto them, Go ye into the city, and there shall meet you a man bearing a pitcher of water: follow him.
13. So Jesus sent two of his disciples with these instructions, "Go into the city and there a man will come to you carrying a jar of water. Follow him to the house he enters and say to the owner,
14. And wheresoever he shall go in, say ye to the goodman of the house, The Master saith, Where is the guestchamber, where I shall eat the passover with my disciples?
14. 'The Master says: Where is the room where I may eat the Passover meal with my disciples?'
15. And he will shew you a large upper room furnished [and] prepared: there make ready for us.
15. Then he will show you a large room upstairs, already arranged and furnished. There you will prepare for us."
16. And his disciples went forth, and came into the city, and found as he had said unto them: and they made ready the passover.
16. The disciples went off. When they reached the city, they found everything just as Jesus had told them; and they prepared the Passover meal.
17. And in the evening he cometh with the twelve.
17. When it was evening, Jesus arrived with the Twelve.
18. And as they sat and did eat, Jesus said, Verily I say unto you, One of you which eateth with me shall betray me.
18. While they were at table eating, Jesus said, "Truly, I tell you, one of you will betray me, one who shares my meal."
19. And they began to be sorrowful, and to say unto him one by one, [Is] it I? and another [said, Is] it I?
19. They were deeply distressed at hearing this and asked him, one after the other, "You don't mean me, do you?"
20. And he answered and said unto them, [It is] one of the twelve, that dippeth with me in the dish.
20. And Jesus answered, "It is one of you Twelve, one who dips his bread in the dish with me.
21. The Son of man indeed goeth, as it is written of him: but woe to that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed! good were it for that man if he had never been born.
21. The Son of Man is going as the Scriptures say he will. But alas for that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed; better for him if he had never been born."
22. And as they did eat, Jesus took bread, and blessed, and brake [it], and gave to them, and said, Take, eat: this is my body.
22. While they were eating, Jesus took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them. And he said, "Take this, it is my body."
23. And he took the cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave [it] to them: and they all drank of it.
23. Then he took a cup and after he had given thanks, passed it to them and they all drank from it.
24. And he said unto them, This is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many.
24. And he said, "This is my blood, the blood of the Covenant, which is to be poured out for many.
25. Verily I say unto you, I will drink no more of the fruit of the vine, until that day that I drink it new in the kingdom of God.
25. Truly, I say to you, I will not taste the fruit of the vine again until the day I drink the new wine in the kingdom of God."
26. And when they had sung an hymn, they went out into the mount of Olives.
26. After singing psalms of praise, they went out to the Hill of Olives.
27. And Jesus saith unto them, All ye shall be offended because of me this night: for it is written, I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep shall be scattered.
27. And Jesus said to them, "All of you will be confused and fall away; for the Scripture says: I will strike the shepherd and the sheep will be scattered.
28. But after that I am risen, I will go before you into Galilee.
28. But after I am raised up, I will go to Galilee ahead of you."
29. But Peter said unto him, Although all shall be offended, yet [will] not I.
29. Then Peter said to him, "Even though all the others fall away, I will not."
30. And Jesus saith unto him, Verily I say unto thee, That this day, [even] in this night, before the cock crow twice, thou shalt deny me thrice.
30. And Jesus replied, "Truly, I say to you, today, this very night before the cock crows twice, you will deny me three times."
31. But he spake the more vehemently, If I should die with thee, I will not deny thee in any wise. Likewise also said they all.
31. But Peter insisted,"Though I have to die with you, I will never deny you." And all of them said the same.
32. And they came to a place which was named Gethsemane: and he saith to his disciples, Sit ye here, while I shall pray.
32. They came to a place which was called Gethsemane and Jesus said to his disciples, "Sit here while I pray."
33. And he taketh with him Peter and James and John, and began to be sore amazed, and to be very heavy;
33. But he took Peter, James and John along with him, and becoming filled with fear and distress,
34. And saith unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful unto death: tarry ye here, and watch.
34. he said to them, "My soul is full of sorrow, even to death. Remain here and stay awake."
35. And he went forward a little, and fell on the ground, and prayed that, if it were possible, the hour might pass from him.
35. Then he went a little further on and fell to the ground, praying that if possible this hour might pass him by. Jesus said,
36. And he said, Abba, Father, all things [are] possible unto thee; take away this cup from me: nevertheless not what I will, but what thou wilt.
36. "Abba (Daddy), all things are possible for you; take this cup away from me. Yet not what I want, but what you want."
37. And he cometh, and findeth them sleeping, and saith unto Peter, Simon, sleepest thou? couldest not thou watch one hour?
37. Then he came and found them asleep and said to Peter, "Simon, are you sleeping? Couldn't you stay awake for one hour?
38. Watch ye and pray, lest ye enter into temptation. The spirit truly [is] ready, but the flesh [is] weak.
38. Keep watch and pray, all of you, so that you may not slip into temptation. The spirit indeed is eager but human nature is weak.
39. And again he went away, and prayed, and spake the same words.
39. And going away he prayed saying the same words.
40. And when he returned, he found them asleep again, (for their eyes were heavy,) neither wist they what to answer him.
40. When he came back to the disciples, he found them asleep again; they could not keep their eyes open, and they did not know what to say to him.
41. And he cometh the third time, and saith unto them, Sleep on now, and take [your] rest: it is enough, the hour is come; behold, the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.
41. When he came back the third time, he said, "You can sleep on now and take your rest! It is all over, the time has come; the Son of Man is now given into the hands of sinners.
42. Rise up, let us go; lo, he that betrayeth me is at hand.
42. Get up, let us go. Look: the one betraying me is right here."
43. And immediately, while he yet spake, cometh Judas, one of the twelve, and with him a great multitude with swords and staves, from the chief priests and the scribes and the elders.
43. While Jesus was still speaking, Judas, one of the twelve, came up. With him was a crowd armed with swords and clubs, who had been sent by the chief priests, the teachers of the Law and the elders.
44. And he that betrayed him had given them a token, saying, Whomsoever I shall kiss, that same is he; take him, and lead [him] away safely.
44. The traitor had arranged a signal for them, "The one I kiss, he is the man. Arrest him and take him away under guard."
45. And as soon as he was come, he goeth straightway to him, and saith, Master, master; and kissed him.
45. So, when he came, he went directly to Jesus calling, "Master! Master!" and kissed him.
46. And they laid their hands on him, and took him.
46. Then they seized Jesus and arrested him.
47. And one of them that stood by drew a sword, and smote a servant of the high priest, and cut off his ear.
47. One of the bystanders drew his sword and struck out at the High Priest's servant, cutting off his ear.
48. And Jesus answered and said unto them, Are ye come out, as against a thief, with swords and [with] staves to take me?
48. Jesus turned to them saying, "So you have set out against a robber! Did you need swords and clubs to arrest me?
49. I was daily with you in the temple teaching, and ye took me not: but the scriptures must be fulfilled.
49. Day after day I was among you teaching in the Temple and you did not arrest me. But let the Scriptures be fulfilled."
50. And they all forsook him, and fled.
50. Then they all deserted him and fled.
51. And there followed him a certain young man, having a linen cloth cast about [his] naked [body]; and the young men laid hold on him:
51. A young man covered by nothing but a linen cloth followed Jesus. As they took hold of him,
52. And he left the linen cloth, and fled from them naked.
52. he left the cloth in their hands and fled away naked.
53. And they led Jesus away to the high priest: and with him were assembled all the chief priests and the elders and the scribes.
53. They led Jesus to the High Priest and all the chief priests assembled with the elders and the teachers of the Law.
54. And Peter followed him afar off, even into the palace of the high priest: and he sat with the servants, and warmed himself at the fire.
54. Peter had followed him at a distance and went right into the courtyard of the High Priest, where he sat with the guards, warming himself at the fire.
55. And the chief priests and all the council sought for witness against Jesus to put him to death; and found none.
55. Now the chief priests and the whole Council tried to find some evidence against Jesus so that they might put him to death, but they were unable to find any.
56. For many bare false witness against him, but their witness agreed not together.
56. Even though many came up to speak falsely against him, their evidence did not agree.
57. And there arose certain, and bare false witness against him, saying,
57. At last some stood up and gave this false witness:
58. We heard him say, I will destroy this temple that is made with hands, and within three days I will build another made without hands.
58. "We heard him say: 'I will destroy this Temple made by hands and in three days I will build another not made by human hands."
59. But neither so did their witness agree together.
59. But even so their evidence did not agree.
60. And the high priest stood up in the midst, and asked Jesus, saying, Answerest thou nothing? what [is it which] these witness against thee?
60. The High Priest then stood up in the midst of them and asked Jesus, "Have you no answer at all? What of this evidence against you?"
61. But he held his peace, and answered nothing. Again the high priest asked him, and said unto him, Art thou the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?
61. But Jesus was silent and made no reply. The High Priest put a second question to him, "Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One?"
62. And Jesus said, I am: and ye shall see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven.
62. Then Jesus answered, "I am, and you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of the Most Powerful and coming with the clouds of heaven around him."
63. Then the high priest rent his clothes, and saith, What need we any further witnesses?
63. The High Priest tore his clothes to show his horror and said, "What more evidence do we need?
64. Ye have heard the blasphemy: what think ye? And they all condemned him to be guilty of death.
64. You have just heard his blasphemous words. What is your decision?" And they all condemned Jesus saying, "He must die."
65. And some began to spit on him, and to cover his face, and to buffet him, and to say unto him, Prophesy: and the servants did strike him with the palms of their hands.
65. Some of them began to spit on Jesus and, blindfolding him, they struck him saying, "Play the prophet!" And the guards set upon him with blows.
66. And as Peter was beneath in the palace, there cometh one of the maids of the high priest:
66. While Peter was below in the courtyard, one of the High Priest's servant-girls came by.
67. And when she saw Peter warming himself, she looked upon him, and said, And thou also wast with Jesus of Nazareth.
67. Noticing Peter beside the fire, she looked straight at him and said, "You also were with Jesus, the Nazarene."
68. But he denied, saying, I know not, neither understand I what thou sayest. And he went out into the porch; and the cock crew.
68. But he denied it, "I don't know or understand what you are talking about." And he went out through the gateway.
69. And a maid saw him again, and began to say to them that stood by, This is [one] of them.
69. The servant-girl saw him there and told the bystanders, "This man is one of them."
70. And he denied it again. And a little after, they that stood by said again to Peter, Surely thou art [one] of them: for thou art a Galilaean, and thy speech agreeth [thereto].
70. But Peter denied it again. After a little while those standing by said to Peter, "Of course you are one of them; you are a Galilean, aren't you?"
71. But he began to curse and to swear, [saying], I know not this man of whom ye speak.
71. And Peter began to justify himself with curses and oaths, "I don't know the man you are talking about."
72. And the second time the cock crew. And Peter called to mind the word that Jesus said unto him, Before the cock crow twice, thou shalt deny me thrice. And when he thought thereon, he wept.
72. Just then a cock crowed a second time and Peter remembered what Jesus had said to him, "Before the cock crows twice you will deny me three times." And he broke down and wept.
