Ezekiel, 29

1. On the twelfth day of the tenth month in the tenth year, the word of the LORD came to me:

1. In the tenth year, on the twelfth day of the tenth month, the word of Yahweh was addressed to me as follows,

2. Son of man, set your face against Pharaoh, king of Egypt, and prophesy against him and against all Egypt.

2. 'Son of man, turn towards Pharaoh king of Egypt and prophesy against him and against the whole of Egypt.

3. Say this to him: Thus says the Lord GOD: See! I am coming at you, Pharaoh, king of Egypt, Great crouching monster amidst your Niles: Who say, "The Niles are mine; it is I who made them!"

3. Speak and say, "The Lord Yahweh says this: Look, I am against you, Pharaoh king of Egypt- the great crocodile wallowing in his Niles who thought: My Nile is mine, I made it.

4. I will put hooks in your jaws and make the fish of your Niles stick to your scales, then draw you up from the midst of your Niles along with all the fish of your Niles sticking to your scales.

4. I shall put hooks through your jaws, make your Nile fish stick to your scales, and pull you out of your Niles with all your Nile fish sticking to your scales.

5. I will cast you into the desert, you and all the fish of your Niles; You shall fall upon the open field, you shall not be taken up or buried; To the beasts of the earth and the birds of the air I give you as food,

5. I shall drop you in the desert, with all your Nile fish. You will fall in the wilds and not be taken up or buried. I shall give you as food to the wild animals and the birds of heaven,

6. That all who dwell in Egypt may know that I am the LORD. Because you have been a reed staff for the house of Israel:

6. and all the inhabitants of Egypt will know that I am Yahweh, for they have given no more support than a reed to the House of Israel.

7. When they held you in hand, you splintered, throwing every shoulder out of joint; When they leaned on you, you broke, bringing each one of them down headlong;

7. Wherever they grasped you, you broke in their hands and cut their hands all over. Whenever they leaned on you, you broke, making all their limbs give way.

8. therefore thus says the Lord GOD: See! I will bring the sword against you, and cut off from you both man and beast.

8. "So, the Lord Yahweh says this: I shall send the sword against you to denude you of human and animal.

9. The land of Egypt shall become a desolate waste; thus they shall know that I am the LORD. Because you said, "The Niles are mine; it is I who made them,"

9. Egypt will become a desolate waste, and they will know that I am Yahweh. Because he thought: The Nile is mine, I made it,

10. therefore see! I am coming at you and against your Niles; I will make the land of Egypt a waste and a desolation from Migdol to Syene, and even to the frontier of Ethiopia.

10. very well, I am against you and your Niles. I shall make Egypt a waste and a desolation, from Migdol to Syene and beyond to the frontiers of Ethiopia.

11. No foot of man or beast shall pass through it; they shall not pass through it, and it will be uninhabited for forty years.

11. No human foot will pass through it, no animal foot will pass through it. For forty years it will remain uninhabited.

12. I will make the land of Egypt the most desolate of lands, and its cities shall be the most deserted of cities for forty years; and I will scatter the Egyptians among the nations and strew them over foreign lands.

12. I shall make Egypt the most desolate of countries; for forty years its cities will be the most desolate of wasted cities. And I shall scatter the Egyptians among the nations and disperse them among the countries.

13. Yet thus says the Lord GOD: At the end of forty years I will gather the Egyptians from the peoples among whom they are scattered,

13. The Lord Yahweh, however, says this: After forty years have passed, I shall gather the Egyptians back from the nations where they were dispersed.

14. and I will restore Egypt's fortune, bringing them back to the land of Pathros, the land of their origin, where it will be the lowliest

14. I shall bring the Egyptian captives back and re-install them in the land of Pathros, in the country of their origin. There they will constitute a modest kingdom.

15. of kingdoms, never more to set itself above the nations. I will make them few, that they may not dominate the nations.

15. Egypt will be the most modest of kingdoms and no longer dominate other nations; for I shall reduce it, so that it will not rule other nations ever again.

16. No longer shall they be for the house of Israel to trust in, but the living reminder of its guilt for having turned to follow after them. Thus they shall know that I am the LORD.

16. It will no longer be anything for the House of Israel to trust in, but will be a reminder of the guilt which lay in turning to it for help. And they will know that I am Lord Yahweh." '

17. On the first day of the first month in the twenty-seventh year, the word of the LORD came to me:

17. In the twenty-seventh year, on the first day of the first month, the word of Yahweh was addressed to me as follows:

18. Son of man, Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon, has led his army in an exhausting campaign against Tyre. Their heads became bald and their shoulders were galled; but neither he nor his army received any wages from Tyre for the campaign he led against it.

18. 'Son of man, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon has taken his army in a great expedition against Tyre. Their heads have all gone bald, their shoulders are all chafed, but even so he has derived no profit, either for himself or for his army, from the expedition mounted against Tyre.

19. Therefore thus says the Lord GOD: I am now giving the land of Egypt to Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon. He shall carry off its riches, plundering and pillaging it for the wages of his soldiers, who did it for me;

19. Since this is so, the Lord Yahweh says this, "Look, I shall hand Egypt over to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon. He will carry off its riches, loot it, put it to the sack; that will be the wages for his army.

20. as payment for his toil I have given him the land of Egypt, says the Lord GOD.

20. As wages for the trouble he has taken, I am giving him Egypt instead (for they have been working for me)-declares the Lord Yahweh.

21. On that day I will make a horn sprout for the house of Israel, and I will cause you to speak out in their midst; thus they shall know that I am the LORD.

21. "That day, I shall raise up a new stock for the House of Israel and allow you to open your mouth among them. And they will know that I am Yahweh." '

29:1-2 - Viene annunciato il giudizio di Dio sull'Egitto, con la visione di una nazione orgogliosa e umiliata. L'Egitto, che si considerava autosufficiente, vedrà la sua caduta, dimostrando che ogni fiducia nella forza umana è vana di fronte alla potenza di Dio (vedi anche Isaia 19:1 e Geremia 46:25).

29:3-5 - Dio dichiara che il Faraone, re d'Egitto, sarà sconfitto e gettato nel deserto, a simboleggiare la perdita di potere e influenza. La metafora del coccodrillo nell'acqua simboleggia il Faraone e la caduta della sua nazione, dimostrando la fragilità degli imperi umani agli occhi di Dio (vedi anche Isaia 37:29 ed Ezechiele 32:3).

29:6-9 - L'Egitto sarà abbandonato e le sue città saranno desolate, come una nazione non più onorata. Questo rivela la giustizia di Dio contro le nazioni che si ribellano a Lui, e la desolazione è un riflesso della partenza di Dio (vedi anche Geremia 46:11 ed Ezechiele 30:4).

29:10-12 - La terra d'Egitto rimarrà desolata per 40 anni e le nazioni circostanti saranno scosse dalla sua caduta. Disperdere le nazioni che traggono piacere dalla guerra." - Questo versetto è spesso interpretato come un riferimento all'Egitto (la bestia selvaggia tra le canne), riecheggiando il giudizio contro l'Egitto in Ezechiele 29.

Isaia 30:2-3: "che scendono in Egitto senza consultarmi; che cercano la protezione del faraone, cercano rifugio all'ombra dell'Egitto.
