Nehemiah, 6

1. When Sanballat, Tobiah, Geshem the Arab and our other enemies heard that I had rebuilt the wall and that not a single gap was left -- though at that time I had not fixed the doors to the gates-

1. Now when it was reported to Sanbal'lat and Tobi'ah and to Geshem the Arab and to the rest of our enemies that I had built the wall and that there was no breach left in it (although up to that time I had not set up the doors in the gates),

2. Sanballat and Geshem sent me this message, 'Come and meet us at Ha-Chephirim in the Vale of Ono.' But they had evil designs on me.

2. Sanbal'lat and Geshem sent to me, saying, "Come and let us meet together in one of the villages in the plain of Ono." But they intended to do me harm.

3. So I sent messengers to them to say, 'I am engaged in a great undertaking, so I cannot come down. Why should the work stop while I leave it and come down to you?'

3. And I sent messengers to them, saying, "I am doing a great work and I cannot come down. Why should the work stop while I leave it and come down to you?"

4. Four times they sent me the same invitation and I made them the same reply.

4. And they sent to me four times in this way and I answered them in the same manner.

5. The fifth time, with the same purpose in mind, Sanballat sent me his servant bearing an open letter.

5. In the same way Sanbal'lat for the fifth time sent his servant to me with an open letter in his hand.

6. It ran, 'There is a rumour among the nations -- and Gashmu confirms it -- that you and the Jews are thinking of rebelling, which is why you are rebuilding the wall, and you intend to become their king;

6. In it was written, "It is reported among the nations, and Geshem also says it, that you and the Jews intend to rebel; that is why you are building the wall; and you wish to become their king, according to this report.

7. and that you have even briefed prophets to acclaim you in Jerusalem with the cry, "There is a king in Judah!" Now, these rumours are going to reach the king; so you had better come and discuss them with us.'

7. And you have also set up prophets to proclaim concerning you in Jerusalem, `There is a king in Judah.' And now it will be reported to the king according to these words. So now come, and let us take counsel together."

8. To this I sent him the following reply, 'As regards what you say, nothing of the sort has occurred; it is a figment of your own imagination.'

8. Then I sent to him, saying, "No such things as you say have been done, for you are inventing them out of your own mind."

9. For they were all trying to terrorise us, thinking, 'They will become demoralised over the work and it will not get finished.' But my morale rose even higher.

9. For they all wanted to frighten us, thinking, "Their hands will drop from the work, and it will not be done." But now, O God, strengthen thou my hands.

10. Then, when I went to visit Shemaiah son of Delaiah, son of Mehetabel, since he was prevented from coming to me, he said: We must gather at the Temple of God, inside the sanctuary itself; we must shut the sanctuary doors, for they are coming to kill you, they are coming to kill you tonight!

10. Now when I went into the house of Shemai'ah the son of Delai'ah, son of Mehet'abel, who was shut up, he said, "Let us meet together in the house of God, within the temple, and let us close the doors of the temple; for they are coming to kill you, at night they are coming to kill you."

11. But I retorted, 'Should a man like me run away? Would a man like me go into the Temple to save his life? I shall not go in!'

11. But I said, "Should such a man as I flee? And what man such as I could go into the temple and live? I will not go in."

12. I realised that God had not sent him to say this, but that he had produced this prophecy for me because Tobiah was paying him

12. And I understood, and saw that God had not sent him, but he had pronounced the prophecy against me because Tobi'ah and Sanbal'lat had hired him.

13. to terrorise me into doing as he said and committing a sin, so that they would have grounds for blackening my reputation and blaming me.

13. For this purpose he was hired, that I should be afraid and act in this way and sin, and so they could give me an evil name, in order to taunt me.

14. Remember Tobiah, my God, for what he did; and Noadiah the prophetess, and the other prophets who tried to terrorise me.

14. Remember Tobi'ah and Sanbal'lat, O my God, according to these things that they did, and also the prophetess No-adi'ah and the rest of the prophets who wanted to make me afraid.

15. The wall was finished within fifty-two days, on the twenty-fifth of Elul.

15. So the wall was finished on the twenty-fifth day of the month Elul, in fifty-two days.

16. When all our enemies heard about it and all the surrounding nations saw it, they thought it a wonderful thing, because they realised that this work had been accomplished by the power of our God.

16. And when all our enemies heard of it, all the nations round about us were afraid and fell greatly in their own esteem; for they perceived that this work had been accomplished with the help of our God.

17. During this same period, the nobles of Judah kept sending letter after letter to Tobiah, and letters from Tobiah kept arriving for them;

17. Moreover in those days the nobles of Judah sent many letters to Tobi'ah, and Tobi'ah's letters came to them.

18. for he had many sworn to his interest in Judah, since he was son-in-law to Shecaniah son of Arah, and his son Jehohanan had married the daughter of Meshullam son of Berechiah.

18. For many in Judah were bound by oath to him, because he was the son-in-law of Shecani'ah the son of Arah: and his son Jehoha'nan had taken the daughter of Meshul'lam the son of Berechi'ah as his wife.

19. They even cried up his good deeds in my presence, and they reported what I said back to him. And Tobiah kept sending letters to terrorise me.

19. Also they spoke of his good deeds in my presence, and reported my words to him. And Tobi'ah sent letters to make me afraid.

6:1-4 - Sanballat e Ghesem cercano di ingannare Neemia con falsi inviti alla pace, ma egli rimane saldo nella sua missione. La perseveranza di fronte all'opposizione è fondamentale per compiere l'opera di Dio (vedi anche Proverbi 4:25-27 ed Efesini 6:13).

6:5-9 - Sanballat accusa Neemia di tradimento in una lettera aperta, ma Neemia nega e prega per avere forza. La preghiera è un'arma potente contro l'intimidazione e la calunnia (vedi anche Salmo 55:22 e Matteo 5:11-12).

6:10-13 - Neemia viene falsamente avvertito di nascondersi nel tempio, ma scopre l'inganno. Il discernimento spirituale è fondamentale per evitare di cadere in trappole che allontanano dalla volontà di Dio (vedi anche Proverbi 14:15 e 1 Corinzi 2:15).

6:15-16 - Le mura di Gerusalemme vengono completate in 52 giorni, sorprendendo i nemici di Israele. Il successo di Neemia dimostra che quando il popolo collabora e confida in Dio, anche i compiti più difficili possono essere portati a termine (vedi anche Salmo 127:1 e Filippesi 4:13).
