Exode, 18

1. Jéthro, prêtre de Madian. beau-père de Moïse, apprit tout ce que Dieu avait fait en faveur de Moïse et d'Israël, son peuple: que Yahweh avait fait sortir Israël d'Egypte.

1. Now Moses' father-in-law Jethro, the priest of Midian, heard of all that God had done for Moses and for his people Israel: how the LORD had brought Israel out of Egypt.

2. Jéthro, beau-père de Moïse, prit Séphora, femme de Moïse, qui avait été renvoyée,

2. So his father-in-law Jethro took along Zipporah, Moses' wife, whom Moses had sent back to him,

3. et les deux fils de Séphora, dont l'un se nommait Gersam, parce que Moïse avait dit: "Je suis un étranger sur une terre étrangère",

3. and her two sons. One of these was called Gershom; for he said, "I am a stranger in a foreign land."

4. et l'autre s'appelait Eliézer, parce qu'il avait dit: "Le Dieu de mon père m'a secouru, et il m'a délivré de l'épée de Pharaon."

4. The other was called Eliezer; for he said, "My father's God is my helper; he has rescued me from Pharaoh's sword."

5. Jéthro, beau-père de Moïse, avec les fils et la femme de Moïse, vint donc vers lui au désert où il campait, à la montagne de Dieu.

5. Together with Moses' wife and sons, then, his father-in-law Jethro came to him in the desert where he was encamped near the mountain of God,

6. Il fit dire à Moïse : "Moi, ton beau-père, Jéthro, je viens vers toi, ainsi que ta femme et ses deux fils avec elle."

6. and he sent word to Moses, "I, Jethro, your father-in-law, am coming to you, along with your wife and her two sons."

7. Moïse sortit au-devant de son beau-père et, s'étant prosterné, il le baisa; puis ils s'informèrent réciproquement de leur santé, et ils entrèrent dans la tente de Moïse.

7. Moses went out to meet his father-in-law, bowed down before him, and kissed him. Having greeted each other, they went into the tent.

8. Moïse raconta à son beau-père tout ce que Yahweh avait fait à Pharaon et à l'Egypte à cause d'Israël, toutes les souffrances qui leur étaient survenues en chemin, et comment Yahweh les en avait délivrés.

8. Moses then told his father-in-law of all that the LORD had done to Pharaoh and the Egyptians for the sake of Israel, and of all the hardships they had had to endure on their journey, and how the LORD had come to their rescue.

9. Jéthro se réjouit de tout le bien que Yahweh avait fait à Israël, et de ce qu'il l'avait délivré de la main des Egyptiens. Et Jéthro dit:

9. Jethro rejoiced over all the goodness that the LORD had shown Israel in rescuing them from the hands of the Egyptians.

10. "Béni soit Yahweh qui vous a délivrés de la main des Egyptiens et de la main de Pharaon, et qui a délivré le peuple de la main des Egyptiens !

10. "Blessed be the LORD," he said, "who has rescued his people from the hands of Pharaoh and the Egyptians.

11. Je sais maintenant que Yahweh est plus grand que tous les dieux, car il s'est montré grand alors que les Egyptiens opprimaient Israël."

11. Now I know that the LORD is a deity great beyond any other; for he took occasion of their being dealt with insolently to deliver the people from the power of the Egyptians."

12. Jéthro, beau-père de Moïse, offrit à Dieu un holocauste et des sacrifices. Aaron et tous les anciens d'Israël vinrent prendre part au repas, avec le beau-père de Moïse, en présence de Dieu.

12. Then Jethro, the father-in-law of Moses, brought a holocaust and other sacrifices to God, and Aaron came with all the elders of Israel to participate with Moses' father-in-law in the meal before God.

13. Le lendemain, Moïse s'assit pour juger le peuple, et le peuple se tint devant lui depuis le matin jusqu'au soir.

13. The next day Moses sat in judgment for the people, who waited about him from morning until evening.

14. Le beau-père de Moïse, voyant tout ce qu'il faisait pour le peuple, dit: "Que fais-tu là pour ces gens ? Pourquoi sièges-tu seul, et tout le peuple se tient-il devant toi depuis le matin jusqu'au soir?"

14. When his father-in-law saw all that he was doing for the people, he inquired, "What sort of thing is this that you are doing for the people? Why do you sit alone while all the people have to stand about you from morning till evening?"

15. Moïse répondit à son beau-père: "C'est que le peuple vient à moi pour consulter Dieu.

15. Moses answered his father-in-law, "The people come to me to consult God.

16. Quand ils ont quelque affaire, ils viennent à moi; je prononce entre eux, en faisant connaître les ordres de Dieu et ses lois."

16. Whenever they have a disagreement, they come to me to have me settle the matter between them and make known to them God's decisions and regulations."

17. Le beau-père de Moïse lui dit: "Ce que tu fais n'est pas bien.

17. "You are not acting wisely," his father-in-law replied.

18. Tu succomberas certainement, toi et le peuple qui est avec toi; car la tâche est au-dessus de tes forces, et tu ne saurais y suffire seul.

18. "You will surely wear yourself out, and not only yourself but also these people with you. The task is too heavy for you; you cannot do it alone.

19. Maintenant, écoute ma voix; je vais te donner un conseil, et que Dieu soit avec toi! Toi, sois le représentant du peuple auprès de Dieu, et porte les affaires devant Dieu.

19. Now, listen to me, and I will give you some advice, that God may be with you. Act as the people's representative before God, bringing to him whatever they have to say.

20. Apprends-leur les ordonnances et les lois, et fais-leur connaître la voie qu'ils doivent suivre et ce qu'ils doivent faire.

20. Enlighten them in regard to the decisions and regulations, showing them how they are to live and what they are to do.

21. Maintenant choisis parmi tout le peuple des hommes capables et craignant Dieu, des hommes intègres, ennemis de la cupidité, et établis-les sur eux comme chefs de milliers, chefs de centaines, chefs de cinquantaines et chefs de dizaines.

21. But you should also look among all the people for able and God-fearing men, trustworthy men who hate dishonest gain, and set them as officers over groups of thousands, of hundreds, of fifties, and of tens.

22. Ils jugeront le peuple en tout temps, porteront devant toi toutes les causes importantes, et décideront eux-mêmes dans toutes les petites causes. Allège ainsi ta charge, et qu'ils la portent avec toi.

22. Let these men render decisions for the people in all ordinary cases. More important cases they should refer to you, but all the lesser cases they can settle themselves. Thus, your burden will be lightened, since they will bear it with you.

23. Si tu fais cela, et que Dieu te donne des ordres, tu pourras y tenir et tout ce peuple aussi viendra en paix en son lieu."

23. If you do this, when God gives you orders you will be able to stand the strain, and all these people will go home satisfied."

24. Moïse écouta la voix de son beau-père et fit tout ce qu'il avait dit.

24. Moses followed the advice of his father-in-law and did all that he had suggested.

25. Moïse choisit dans tout Israël des hommes capables, et il les préposa au peuple comme chefs de milliers, chefs de centaines, chefs de cinquantaines et chefs de dizaines.

25. He picked out able men from all Israel and put them in charge of the people as officers over groups of thousands, of hundreds, of fifties, and of tens.

26. Ils jugeaient le peuple en tout temps; ils portaient devant Moïse toutes les affaires graves, et décidaient eux-mêmes toutes les petites causes.

26. They rendered decisions for the people in all ordinary cases. The more difficult cases they referred to Moses, but all the lesser cases they settled themselves.

27. Moïse prit congé de son beau-père, et Jéthro s'en retourna dans son pays.

27. Then Moses bade farewell to his father-in-law, who went off to his own country.
