Exode, 22

1. Si le voleur est surpris la nuit faisant effraction, et qu'il soit frappé et meure, on n'est pas responsable du sang pour lui ;

1. "(If a thief is caught in the act of housebreaking and beaten to death, there is no bloodguilt involved.

2. mais si le soleil est levé, on sera responsable du sang pour lui. -- Le voleur fera restitution : s'il n'a rien, on le vendra pour ce qu'il a volé.

2. But if after sunrise he is thus beaten, there is bloodguilt.) He must make full restitution. If he has nothing, he shall be sold to pay for his theft.

3. Si ce qu'il a volé, boeuf, âne ou brebis, se trouve encore vivant entre ses mains, il restituera le double.

3. If what he stole is found alive in his possession, be it an ox, an ass or a sheep, he shall restore two animals for each one stolen.

4. Si un homme fait du dégât dans un champ ou dans une vigne, en laissant son bétail brouter le champ d'autrui, il donnera en dédommagement le meilleur de son champ et le meilleur de sa vigne.

4. "When a man is burning over a field or a vineyard, if he lets the fire spread so that it burns in another's field, he must make restitution with the best produce of his own field or vineyard.

5. Si un feu éclate et que, après avoir atteint les épines, il consume des gerbes, ou du blé sur pied, ou un champ, celui qui aura allumé l'incendie donnera un dédommagement.

5. If the fire spreads further, and catches on to thorn bushes, so that shocked grain or standing grain or the field itself is burned up, the one who started the fire must make full restitution.

6. Si un homme donne en garde à un autre de l'argent ou des objets, et qu'on les vole de la maison de ce dernier, le voleur, si on le trouve, restituera le double.

6. "When a man gives money or an article to another for safekeeping and it is stolen from the latter's house, the thief, if caught, must make twofold restitution.

7. Si le voleur n'est. pas trouvé, le maître de la maison se présentera devant Dieu, pour déclarer s'il n'a pas mis la main sur le bien de son prochain.

7. If the thief is not caught, the owner of the house shall be brought to God, to swear that he himself did not lay hands on his neighbor's property.

8. Quel que soit le corps du délit, boeuf, âne, brebis, vêtement ou tout objet perdu, au sujet duquel on dira: "C'est bien cela !" La cause des deux parties ira jusqu'à Dieu, et celui que Dieu aura condamné restituera le double à son prochain.

8. In every question of dishonest appropriation, whether it be about an ox, or an ass, or a sheep, or a garment, or anything else that has disappeared, where another claims that the thing is his, both parties shall present their case before God; the one whom God convicts must make twofold restitution to the other.

9. Si un homme donne en garde à un autre un boeuf, une brebis, une tête de bétail quelconque, et que l'animal meure, se casse un membre, ou soit enlevé, sans qu'il y ait de témoin,

9. "When a man gives an ass, or an ox, or a sheep, or any other animal to another for safekeeping, if it dies, or is maimed or snatched away, without anyone witnessing the fact,

10. le serment de Yahweh interviendra entre les deux parties, pour qu'on sache si le dépositaire n'a pas mis la main sur le bien de son prochain; et le propriétaire de la bête acceptera ce serment, et l'autre n'aura pas à indemniser.

10. the custodian shall swear by the LORD that he did not lay hands on his neighbor's property; the owner must accept the oath, and no restitution is to be made.

11. Mais si la bête a été dérobée chez lui, il aura à indemniser le propriétaire.

11. But if the custodian is really guilty of theft, he must make restitution to the owner.

12. Si elle a été déchirée par une bête féroce, il en produira les restes en témoignage, et il n'aura point à indemniser pour la bête déchirée.

12. If it has been killed by a wild beast, let him bring it as evidence, and he need not make restitution for the mangled animal.

13. Si un homme emprunte à un autre une bête, et qu'elle se casse un membre ou meure, son propriétaire n'étant pas présent, il y aura lieu à l'indemnité.

13. "When a man borrows an animal from his neighbor, if it is maimed or dies while the owner is not present, the man must make restitution.

14. Si le propriétaire est présent, on n'indemnisera pas. Si la bête était louée, le prix de louage sera une compensation.

14. But if the owner is present, he need not make restitution. If it was hired, this was covered by the price of its hire.

15. Si un homme séduit une vierge qui n'est pas fiancée, et couche avec elle, il paiera sa dot et la prendra pour femme.

15. "When a man seduces a virgin who is not betrothed, and lies with her, he shall pay her marriage price and marry her.

16. Si le père refuse de la lui accorder, le séducteur paiera l'argent qu'on donne pour la dot des vierges.

16. If her father refuses to give her to him, he must still pay him the customary marriage price for virgins.

17. Tu ne laisseras pas vivre la magicienne.

17. "You shall not let a sorceress live.

18. Quiconque a commerce avec une bête sera mis à mort.

18. "Anyone who lies with an animal shall be put to death.

19. Celui qui offre des sacrifices aux dieux, et non à Yahweh seul, sera voué à l'anathème.

19. "Whoever sacrifices to any god, except to the LORD alone, shall be doomed.

20. Tu ne maltraiteras point l'étranger et tu ne l'opprimeras point, car. vous avez été des étrangers dans le pays d'Egypte.

20. "You shall not molest or oppress an alien, for you were once aliens yourselves in the land of Egypt.

21. Vous n'affligerez point la veuve ni l'orphelin.

21. You shall not wrong any widow or orphan.

22. Si tu les affliges, ils crieront vers moi,

22. If ever you wrong them and they cry out to me, I will surely hear their cry.

23. et j'entendrai leur cri; ma colère s'enflammera, et je vous détruirai par l'épée, et vos femmes seront des veuves et vos enfants des orphelins.

23. My wrath will flare up, and I will kill you with the sword; then your own wives will be widows, and your children orphans.

24. Si tu prêtes de l'argent à quelqu'un de mon peuple, au pauvre qui est avec toi, tu ne seras point à son égard comme un créancier, tu n'exigeras pas de lui d'intérêt.

24. "If you lend money to one of your poor neighbors among my people, you shall not act like an extortioner toward him by demanding interest from him.

25. Si tu prends en gage le manteau de ton prochain, tu le lui rendras avant le coucher du soleil;

25. If you take your neighbor's cloak as a pledge, you shall return it to him before sunset;

26. car c'est sa seule couverture, c'est le vêtement dont il s'enveloppe le corps ; sur quoi coucherait-il ? S'il crie vers moi, je l'entendrai car je suis compatissant.

26. for this cloak of his is the only covering he has for his body. What else has he to sleep in? If he cries out to me, I will hear him; for I am compassionate.

27. Tu ne blasphémeras pas contre Dieu, et tu ne maudiras pas un prince de ton peuple.

27. "You shall not revile God, nor curse a prince of your people.

28. Tu ne différeras point de m'offrir les prémices de ta moisson et de ton pressoir. Tu me donneras le premier-né de tes fils.

28. "You shall not delay the offering of your harvest and your press. You shall give me the first-born of your sons.

29. Tu feras de même du premier-né de ta vache et de ta brebis : il restera sept jours avec sa mère et le huitième jour tu me le donneras.

29. You must do the same with your oxen and your sheep; for seven days the firstling may stay with its mother, but on the eighth day you must give it to me.

30. Vous serez pour moi des hommes saints; vous ne mangerez point la chair déchirée qui se trouvera dans les champs: vous la jetterez aux chiens.

30. "You shall be men sacred to me. Flesh torn to pieces in the field you shall not eat; throw it to the dogs.
