Deutéronome, 19

1. Lorsque Yahweh, ton Dieu, aura exterminé les nationsdont Yahweh, ton Dieu , te donne le pays; lorsque tu les auraschassées et que tu habiteras dans leurs villes et dansleurs maisons,

1. "When the LORD, your God, removes the nations whose land he is giving you, and you have taken their place and are settled in their cities and houses,

2. tu sépareras trois villes au milieu du pays que Yahweh,ton Dieu, te donne pour le posséder.

2. you shall set apart three cities in the land which the LORD, your God, is giving you to occupy.

3. Tu tiendras en état les routes qui y conduisent, et tudiviseras en trois parties le terrictoire du pays que Yahweh, tonDieu, va te donner en héritage, afin que tout meurtrierpuisse s'enfuir dans ces villes.

3. You shall thereby divide into three regions the land which the LORD, your God, will give you as a heritage, and so arrange the routes that every homicide will be able to find a refuge.

4. Voici dans quel cas le meurtrier qui s'y réfugiera aurala vie sauve: s'il a tué son prochain par mégarde,sans avoir été auparavant son ennemi.

4. "It is in the following case that a homicide may take refuge in such a place to save his life: when someone unwittingly kills his neighbor to whom he had previously borne no malice.

5. Ainsi un homme va couper du bois dans la forêt avec unautre homme; sa main brandit la hache pour abattre un arbre; lefer d'échappe du manche, atteint son compagnon et le tue:cet homme s'enfuira dans l'une de ces villes et il aura la viesauve.

5. For example, if he goes with his neighbor to a forest to cut wood, and as he swings his ax to fell a tree, its head flies off the handle and hits his neighbor a mortal blow, he may take refuge in one of these cities to save his life.

6. Autrement le vengeur du sang, poursuivant le meurtrier dansl'ardeur de sa colère, l'atteindrait, si le cheminétait trop long, et lui porterait un coup mortel; etpourtant cet homme n'aurait pas mérité la mort,puisqu'il n'avait pas auparavant de haine contre la victime.

6. Should the distance be too great, the avenger of blood may in the heat of his anger pursue the homicide and overtake him and strike him dead, even though he does not merit death since he had previously borne the slain man no malice.

7. C'est pourquoi je te donne cet ordre:

7. That is why I order you to set apart three cities.

8. Mets à part trois villes. Et si Yahweh, ton Dieu,élargit tes frontières, comme il l'a juréà tes pères, et qu'il te donne tout le pays qu'il apromis à tes pères de te donner,

8. "But if the LORD, your God, enlarges your territory, as he swore to your fathers, and gives you all the land he promised your fathers he would give

9. -- pourvu que tu observes et mettes en pratique tous cescommandements que je te prescris aujourd'hui, aimant Yahweh, tonDieu, et marchant toujours dans ses voies, -- tu ajouteras encoretrois villes à ces trois-là,

9. in the event that you carefully observe all these commandments which I enjoin on you today, loving the LORD, your God, and ever walking in his ways: then add three cities to these three.

10. afin que le sang innocent ne soit pas versé au milieudu pays que Yahweh, ton Dieu, te donne pour héritage, etqu'il n'y ait pas de sang sur toi.

10. Thus, in the land which the LORD, your God, is giving you as a heritage, innocent blood will not be shed and you will not become guilty of bloodshed.

11. Mais si un homme ayant de la haine contre son prochain, luidresse des embûches, se jette sur lui et lui porte un coupmortel, et qu'ensuite il s'enfuie dans l'une de ces villes,

11. "However, if someone lies in wait for his neighbor out of hatred for him, and rising up against him, strikes him mortally, and then takes refuge in one of these cities,

12. les anciens de sa ville l'enverront saisir et le livrerontentre les mains du vengeur du sang, afin qu'il meure.

12. the elders of his own city shall send for him and have him taken from there, and shall hand him over to be slain by the avenger of blood.

13. Ton oeil n'aura pas de pitié pour lui, et tuôteras d'Israël le sang innocent, et tuprospéreras.

13. Do not look on him with pity, but purge from Israel the stain of shedding innocent blood, that you may prosper.

14. Tu ne déplaceras pas la borne de ton prochain,posée par les ancêtres, dans l'héritage quetu auras au pays que Yahweh, ton Dieu, te donne pour leposséder.

14. "You shall not move your neighbor's landmarks erected by your forefathers in the heritage you receive in the land which the LORD, your God, is giving you to occupy.

15. Un seul témoin ne sera pas admis contre un homme pourconstater un crime ou un péché, quel que soit lepéché commis. C'est sur la parole de deuxtémoins ou sur la parole de trois témoins que lachose sera établie.

15. "One witness alone shall not take the stand against a man in regard to any crime or any offense of which he may be guilty; a judicial fact shall be established only on the testimony of two or three witnesses.

16. Lorsqu'un témoin à charges'élèvera contre un homme pour l'accuser d'uncrime,

16. "If an unjust witness takes the stand against a man to accuse him of a defection from the law,

17. les deux hommes en contestation se présenteront devantYahweh, devant les prêtres et les juges alors enfonction;

17. the two parties in the dispute shall appear before the LORD in the presence of the priests or judges in office at that time;

18. les juges feront avec soin une enquête et, si letémoin se trouve être un faux témoin, s'il afait contre son frère une fausse déposition,

18. and if after a thorough investigation the judges find that the witness is a false witness and has accused his kinsman falsely,

19. vous lui ferez subir ce qu'il avait dessein de faire subirà son frère. Tu ôteras ainsi le mal du milieude toi.

19. you shall do to him as he planned to do to his kinsman. Thus shall you purge the evil from your midst.

20. Les autres, en l'apprenant craindront, et l'on ne commettraplus un acte aussi mauvais au milieu de toi.

20. The rest, on hearing of it, shall fear, and never again do a thing so evil among you.

21. Ton oeil sera sans pitié: vie pour vie, oeil pour oeil,dent pour dent, main pour main, pied pour pied.

21. Do not look on such a man with pity. Life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, and foot for foot!
