Joshua, 24

1. Joshua gathered all the tribes of Israel together at Shechem; he then summoned all the elders of Israel, its leaders, judges and officials, and they presented themselves in God's presence.

1. Josua versammelte alle Stämme Israels in Sichem; er rief die Ältesten Israels, seine Oberhäupter, Richter und Listenführer zusammen und sie traten vor Gott hin.

2. Joshua then said to all the people: 'Yahweh, the God of Israel, says this, "From time immemorial, your ancestors, Terah, father of Abraham and Nahor, lived beyond the River, and served other gods.

2. Josua sagte zum ganzen Volk: So spricht der Herr, der Gott Israels: Jenseits des Stroms wohnten eure Väter von Urzeiten an [Terach, der Vater Abrahams und der Vater Nahors] und dienten anderen Göttern.

3. I then brought your ancestor Abraham from beyond the River and led him through the length and breadth of Canaan. I increased his descendants and I gave him Isaac.

3. Da holte ich euren Vater Abraham von jenseits des Stroms und ließ ihn durch das ganze Land Kanaan ziehen. Ich schenkte ihm zahlreiche Nachkommenschaft und gab ihm Isaak.

4. To Isaac I gave Jacob and Esau. To Esau I gave possession of the mountainous country of Seir. Jacob and his sons went down into Egypt.

4. Dem Isaak gab ich Jakob und Esau und ich verlieh Esau das Bergland Seïr, damit er es in Besitz nahm. Jakob aber und seine Söhne zogen nach Ägypten hinab.

5. I then sent Moses and Aaron, and plagued Egypt with the wonders that I worked there; finally I brought you out.

5. Dann sandte ich Mose und Aaron und strafte Ägypten durch das, was ich in Ägypten tat. Danach habe ich euch herausgeführt

6. I brought your ancestors out of Egypt, and you came to the Sea; the Egyptians pursued your ancestors with chariots and horsemen, to the Sea of Reeds.

6. [ich führte eure Väter heraus] aus Ägypten und ihr seid ans Meer gekommen. Die Ägypter aber verfolgten eure Väter mit Wagen und Pferden bis zum Schilfmeer.

7. They then called to Yahweh, and he spread a thick fog between you and the Egyptians, and made the sea go back on them and cover them. You saw with your own eyes what I did in Egypt. Then, for a long while, you lived in the desert.

7. Da schrien eure Väter zum Herrn und er legte zwischen euch und die Ägypter eine Finsternis und ließ das Meer über sie kommen, sodass es sie überflutete. Mit eigenen Augen habt ihr gesehen, was ich in Ägypten getan habe. Dann habt ihr euch lange in der Wüste aufgehalten.

8. I then brought you into the country of the Amorites, who used to live on the further side of the Jordan; they made war on you and I put them at your mercy; after which, you took possession of their country, since I destroyed them before you.

8. Ich brachte euch in das Land der Amoriter, die jenseits des Jordan wohnten. Sie kämpften mit euch, aber ich gab sie in eure Gewalt; ihr habt ihr Land in Besitz genommen und ich habe sie euretwegen vernichtet.

9. Next, Balak son of Zippor, king of Moab, rose to make war on Israel, and sent for Balaam son of Beor to come and curse you.

9. Dann erhob sich der König Balak von Moab, der Sohn Zippors, und kämpfte gegen Israel. Er schickte Boten zu Bileam, dem Sohn Beors, und ließ ihn rufen, damit er euch verflucht.

10. But I would not listen to Balaam; instead, he had to bless you, and I saved you from his power.

10. Ich aber wollte keinen Fluch von Bileam hören. Darum musste er euch segnen und ich rettete euch aus seiner Gewalt.

11. "You then crossed the Jordan and came to Jericho, but the inhabitants of Jericho made war on you: Amorites, Perizzites, Canaanites, Hittites, Girgashites, Hivites and Jebusites, and I put them all at your mercy.

11. Dann habt ihr den Jordan durchschritten und seid nach Jericho gekommen; die Bürger von Jericho kämpften gegen euch, ebenso die Amoriter, die Perisiter, die Kanaaniter, die Hetiter, die Girgaschiter, die Hiwiter und die Jebusiter und ich gab sie in eure Gewalt.

12. I sent hornets ahead of you, which drove out the two Amorite kings before you; this was not the work of your sword or of your bow.

12. Ich habe Panik vor euch hergeschickt. Sie trieb sie vor euch her [die beiden Könige der Amoriter]; das geschah nicht durch dein Schwert und deinen Bogen.

13. And now I have given you a country for which you have not toiled, towns you have not built, although you live in them, vineyards and olive groves you have not planted, although you eat their fruit."

13. Ich gab euch ein Land, um das ihr euch nicht bemüht hattet, und Städte, die ihr nicht erbaut hattet. Ihr habt in ihnen gewohnt und ihr habt von Weinbergen und Ölbäumen gegessen, die ihr nicht gepflanzt hattet.

14. 'So now, fear Yahweh and serve him truly and sincerely; banish the gods whom your ancestors served beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve Yahweh.

14. Fürchtet also jetzt den Herrn und dient ihm in vollkommener Treue. Schafft die Götter fort, denen eure Väter jenseits des Stroms und in Ägypten gedient haben, und dient dem Herrn!

15. But if serving Yahweh seems a bad thing to you, today you must make up your minds whom you do mean to serve, whether the gods whom your ancestors served beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose country you are now living. As regards my family and me, we shall serve Yahweh.'

15. Wenn es euch aber nicht gefällt, dem Herrn zu dienen, dann entscheidet euch heute, wem ihr dienen wollt: den Göttern, denen eure Väter jenseits des Stroms dienten, oder den Göttern der Amoriter, in deren Land ihr wohnt. Ich aber und mein Haus, wir wollen dem Herrn dienen.

16. The people replied, 'Far be it from us to desert Yahweh and to serve other gods!

16. Das Volk antwortete: Das sei uns fern, dass wir den Herrn verlassen und anderen Göttern dienen.

17. Yahweh our God was the one who brought us and our ancestors here from Egypt, from the place of slave-labour, who worked those great wonders before our eyes and who kept us safe all along the way we travelled and among all the peoples through whom we passed.

17. Denn der Herr, unser Gott, war es, der uns und unsere Väter aus dem Sklavenhaus Ägypten herausgeführt hat und der vor unseren Augen alle die großen Wunder getan hat. Er hat uns beschützt auf dem ganzen Weg, den wir gegangen sind, und unter allen Völkern, durch deren Gebiet wir gezogen sind.

18. And Yahweh has driven all the nations out for us, including the Amorites who used to live in the country. We too shall serve Yahweh, for he is our God.'

18. Der Herr hat alle Völker vertrieben, auch die Amoriter, die vor uns im Land wohnten. Auch wir wollen dem Herrn dienen; denn er ist unser Gott.

19. Joshua then said to the people, 'You will not be able to serve Yahweh, since he is a holy God, he is a jealous God who will not tolerate either your misdeeds or your sins.

19. Da sagte Josua zum Volk: Ihr seid nicht imstande, dem Herrn zu dienen, denn er ist ein heiliger Gott, ein eifersüchtiger Gott; er wird euch eure Frevel und eure Sünden nicht verzeihen.

20. If you desert Yahweh and serve the foreigners' gods, he will turn and maltreat you anew and, in spite of having been good to you in the past, will destroy you.'

20. Wenn ihr den Herrn verlasst und fremden Göttern dient, dann wird er sich von euch abwenden, wird Unglück über euch bringen und euch ein Ende bereiten, obwohl er euch zuvor Gutes getan hat.

21. The people replied to Joshua, 'No! Yahweh is the one we mean to serve.'

21. Das Volk aber sagte zu Josua: Nein, wir wollen dem Herrn dienen.

22. Joshua then said to the people, 'You are witnesses to yourselves that you have chosen Yahweh, to serve him.' They replied, 'Witnesses we are!'

22. Josua antwortete dem Volk: Ihr seid Zeugen gegen euch selbst, dass ihr euch für den Herrn und für seinen Dienst entschieden habt. [Sie antworteten: Das sind wir.]

23. 'Then banish the foreign gods which you have with you and give your allegiance to Yahweh, God of Israel!'

23. Schafft also jetzt die fremden Götter ab, die noch bei euch sind, und neigt eure Herzen dem Herrn zu, dem Gott Israels!

24. The people replied to Joshua, 'Yahweh our God is the one whom we shall serve; his voice we shall obey!'

24. Das Volk sagte zu Josua: Dem Herrn, unserem Gott, wollen wir dienen und auf seine Stimme hören.

25. That day Joshua made a covenant for the people; he laid down a statute and ordinance for them at Shechem.

25. So schloss Josua an jenem Tag einen Bund für das Volk und gab dem Volk Gesetz und Recht in Sichem.

26. Joshua wrote these words in the Book of the Law of God. He then took a large stone and set it up there, under the oak tree in Yahweh's sanctuary.

26. Josua schrieb alle diese Worte in das Buch des Gesetzes Gottes und er nahm einen großen Stein und stellte ihn in Sichem unter der Eiche auf, die im Heiligtum des Herrn steht.

27. Joshua then said to all the people, 'Look, this stone will be a witness to us, since it has heard all the words that Yahweh has spoken to us: it will be a witness against you, in case you should deny your God.'

27. Dabei sagte er zu dem ganzen Volk: Seht her, dieser Stein wird ein Zeuge sein gegen uns; denn er hat alle Worte des Herrn gehört, die er zu uns gesprochen hat. Er soll ein Zeuge sein gegen euch, damit ihr euren Gott nicht verleugnet.

28. Joshua then dismissed the people, every one to his own heritage.

28. Dann entließ Josua das Volk, einen jeden in seinen Erbbesitz.

29. After this, Joshua son of Nun, servant of Yahweh, died; he was a hundred and ten years old.

29. Nach diesen Ereignissen starb Josua, der Sohn Nuns, der Knecht des Herrn, im Alter von hundertzehn Jahren.

30. He was buried on the estate which he had received as his heritage, at Timnath-Serah which lies in the highlands of Ephraim, north of Mount Gaash.

30. Man begrub ihn in Timnat-Serach, im Gebiet seines Erbbesitzes auf dem Gebirge Efraim, nördlich vom Berg Gaasch.

31. Israel served Yahweh throughout the lifetime of Joshua and throughout the lifetime of those elders who outlived Joshua and had known all the deeds which Yahweh had done for the sake of Israel.

31. Israel aber diente dem Herrn, solange Josua lebte und solange die Ältesten am Leben waren, die Josua überlebten und alles wussten, was der Herr für Israel getan hatte.

32. As regards the bones of Joseph, which the Israelites had brought from Egypt, these were buried at Shechem in the plot of ground which Jacob had bought for a hundred pieces of silver from the sons of Hamor father of Shechem, and which had become the heritage of the sons of Joseph.

32. Die Gebeine Josefs, die die Israeliten aus Ägypten mitgebracht hatten, begrub man in Sichem auf dem Grundstück, das Jakob von den Söhnen Hamors, des Vaters Sichems, für hundert Kesita erworben hatte; es war den Nachkommen Josefs als Erbbesitz zuteil geworden.

33. Eleazar son of Aaron then died and was buried at Gibeah, the town of his son Phinehas, which had been given to him in the highlands of Ephraim.

33. Auch Eleasar, der Sohn Aarons, starb und man begrub ihn in Gibea, (der Stadt) seines Sohnes Pinhas, die man ihm im Gebirge Efraim gegeben hatte.
