1 Chronicles, 21

1. Satan took his stand against Israel and incited David to take a census of Israel.

1. Der Satan trat gegen Israel auf und reizte David, Israel zu zählen.

2. David said to Joab and the people's princes, 'Go, and take a census of Israel, from Beersheba to Dan, then bring it back to me and let me know the total.'

2. David befahl Joab und den Anführern des Volkes: Geht, zählt Israel von Beerscheba bis Dan und bringt mir Bescheid, damit ich weiß, wie viele es sind.

3. Joab replied, 'May Yahweh multiply his people to a hundred times what they are today! But my lord king, are they not all my lord's servants in any case? Why should my lord insist on this? Why should he involve Israel in guilt?'

3. Joab aber sagte zum König: Der Herr möge sein Volk vermehren, hundertmal mehr, als es jetzt ist. Sind denn nicht alle, mein Herr und König, Untertanen meines Herrn? Warum hat mein Herr diesen Wunsch? Warum soll Israel in Schuld geraten?

4. But the king enforced his order on Joab, and Joab set out, travelled throughout all Israel, and then returned to Jerusalem.

4. Doch der König beharrte gegenüber Joab auf seinem Befehl. So ging Joab weg und durchzog ganz Israel. Als er nach Jerusalem zurückkam,

5. Joab gave David the census results for the people: all Israel had eleven hundred thousand men who could wield a sword; Judah had four hundred and seventy thousand men who could wield a sword.

5. gab er David das Ergebnis der Volkszählung bekannt. Ganz Israel zählte 1100000 Krieger, die mit dem Schwert kämpfen konnten, und Juda zählte 470000 Mann, die mit dem Schwert kämpfen konnten.

6. Joab had found the king's command so distasteful that he did not include Levi and Benjamin.

6. Levi und Benjamin hatte Joab nicht zusammen mit ihnen gezählt, denn der Befehl des Königs war ihm ein Gräuel.

7. God looked with displeasure on this and punished Israel in consequence.

7. Doch das missfiel Gott; darum schlug er Israel.

8. David then said to God, 'I have committed a grave sin by doing this. But now I beg you to forgive your servant for this fault, for I have acted very foolishly.'

8. Nun sagte David zu Gott: Ich habe schwer gesündigt, weil ich das getan habe. Doch vergib deinem Knecht seine Schuld, denn ich habe sehr unvernünftig gehandelt.

9. Yahweh then spoke to Gad, David's seer,

9. Der Herr aber sprach zu Gad, dem Seher Davids:

10. 'Go and say to David, "Yahweh says this: I offer you three things; choose which one of them I am to inflict on you." '

10. Geh und sag zu David: So spricht der Herr: Dreierlei lege ich dir vor. Wähl dir eines davon! Das werde ich dir antun.

11. So Gad went to David and said, 'Yahweh says this,

11. Gad kam zu David und sagte zu ihm: So spricht der Herr: Wähle dir:

12. "Take your choice between three years of famine; or three months of disaster at the hands of your enemies, with your enemies' sword overtaking you; or three days of Yahweh's sword, an epidemic in the country, while the angel of Yahweh wreaks havoc throughout the territory of Israel."

12. drei Jahre Hungersnot, oder drei Monate, in denen du vor deinen Feinden fliehen musst und das Schwert deiner Gegner dich verfolgt, oder drei Tage, in denen das Schwert des Herrn, die Pest, im Land wütet und der Engel des Herrn über alle Gebiete Israels Verderben bringt. Überleg nun, was ich dem, der mich gesandt hat, als Antwort überbringen soll.

13. David said to Gad, 'I am very apprehensive. Better for me to fall into Yahweh's hand, since his mercies are very great, than for me to fall into the hands of human enemies.'

13. Da sagte David zu Gad: Ich habe große Angst. Ich will lieber dem Herrn in die Hände fallen, denn seine Barmherzigkeit ist groß. Den Menschen aber möchte ich nicht in die Hände fallen.

14. So Yahweh unleashed an epidemic on Israel, and seventy thousand Israelites succumbed.

14. Da ließ der Herr über Israel eine Pest kommen und es kamen in Israel siebzigtausend Menschen um.

15. Next, God sent the angel to Jerusalem to destroy it, but as he was about to destroy it, Yahweh looked down and felt sorry about the calamity; and he said to the destroying angel, 'Enough now! Hold your hand!' The angel of Yahweh was standing by the thresh-floor of Ornan the Jebusite.

15. Gott sandte einen Engel nach Jerusalem, um es ins Verderben zu stürzen. Doch als er mit der Vernichtung begann, sah es der Herr und das Unheil reute ihn. Er sagte zu dem Engel des Verderbens: Es ist jetzt genug, lass deine Hand sinken! Der Engel des Herrn stand gerade bei der Tenne des Jebusiters Arauna.

16. David, raising his eyes, saw the angel of Yahweh standing between earth and heaven, a drawn sword in his hand stretched out towards Jerusalem. David and the elders then put on sackcloth and fell on their faces,

16. Als David aufblickte, sah er den Engel des Herrn zwischen Erde und Himmel stehen. Er hielt das gezückte Schwert in der Hand gegen Jerusalem gerichtet. Da fielen David und die Ältesten, die in Trauergewänder gehüllt waren, auf ihr Angesicht nieder

17. and David said to God, 'Did I not order the people to be counted? I was the one who sinned and actually committed the wrong. But these, the flock, what have they done? Yahweh my God, let your hand lie heavy on me and on my family; but spare your people from the plague!'

17. und David rief zu Gott: Habe nicht ich befohlen, das Volk zu zählen? Ich bin es doch, der gesündigt und Böses getan hat. Aber diese, die Herde, was haben denn sie getan? Herr, mein Gott, erheb deine Hand zum Schlag gegen mich und gegen das Haus meines Vaters, nicht aber gegen dein Volk!

18. The angel of Yahweh then ordered Gad to tell David that David should go up and erect an altar to Yahweh on the threshing-floor of Ornan the Jebusite.

18. Der Engel des Herrn befahl Gad, zu David zu sagen, er solle hinaufgehen und dem Herrn auf der Tenne des Jebusiters Arauna einen Altar errichten.

19. So, at Gad's bidding, given in Yahweh's name, David went up.

19. David ging hinauf, wie ihm Gad im Namen des Herrn befohlen hatte.

20. Ornan had turned round and seen the angel, and he and his four sons with him had hidden.

20. Arauna hatte sich umgewandt und den Engel erblickt. Seine vier Söhne, die bei ihm waren, versteckten sich. Er drosch gerade Weizen.

21. When David arrived Ornan was threshing wheat. He looked up and saw David and came off the threshing-floor and prostrated himself on the ground at David's feet.

21. Als nun David zu Arauna kam und dieser aufschaute und David sah, kam er aus der Tenne heraus und warf sich vor David mit dem Gesicht zur Erde nieder.

22. David then said to Ornan, 'Let me have the site of the threshing-floor, so that I can build an altar to Yahweh on it; let me have it at the full price -- so that the plague may be lifted from the people.' Ornan said to David,

22. Da sagte David zu Arauna: Überlass mir den Platz der Tenne! Ich möchte auf ihm einen Altar für den Herrn errichten. Um den vollen Kaufpreis sollst du ihn mir geben, damit die Plage im Volk aufhört.

23. 'Take it, and let my lord the king do what he thinks fit. Look, I shall give you the oxen for burnt offerings, the threshing-sleds for the wood and the wheat for the oblation. I shall give everything.'

23. Arauna antwortete David: Du magst ihn nehmen; mein Herr und König tue, was er für gut findet. Ich gebe dir die Rinder für die Brandopfer, die Dreschschlitten als Brennholz und den Weizen zum Speiseopfer; ich will dir alles geben.

24. 'No,' said King David to Ornan, 'I insist on buying it at the full price. I will not offer Yahweh what belongs to you or bring burnt offerings which have cost me nothing.'

24. Doch König David sagte zu Arauna: Nein, ich will dir den Platz zum vollen Preis abkaufen. Ich will nicht dein Eigentum wegnehmen und dem Herrn unbezahlte Brandopfer darbringen.

25. So David gave Ornan six hundred shekels of gold by weight for the site.

25. So gab David dem Arauna für den Platz sechshundert abgewogene Goldschekel.

26. There David built an altar to Yahweh and brought burnt offerings and peace offerings. He called on Yahweh, and Yahweh answered him with fire from heaven on the altar of burnt offering.

26. Er baute dort einen Altar für den Herrn, brachte Brand- und Heilsopfer dar und rief den Herrn an. Dieser antwortete ihm durch Feuer, das vom Himmel auf den Altar des Brandopfers niederfiel.

27. Then Yahweh ordered the angel to sheathe his sword.

27. Dem Engel aber gebot der Herr, das Schwert in die Scheide zu stecken.

28. Whereupon, seeing that Yahweh had answered him on the threshing-floor of Ornan the Jebusite, David offered sacrifice there.

28. Damals merkte David, dass ihn der Herr auf der Tenne des Jebusiters Arauna erhörte, und brachte dort Opfer dar.

29. The Dwelling which Moses had made in the desert and the altar of burnt offering were at that time on the high place at Gibeon,

29. Die Wohnstätte des Herrn aber, die Mose in der Wüste angefertigt hatte, und der Brandopferaltar waren zu jener Zeit auf der Kulthöhe von Gibeon.

30. but David could not go there to consult God because he was terrified of the angel's sword.

30. Doch David konnte sich nicht mehr dorthin begeben, um Gott aufzusuchen; denn ihn hatte vor dem Schwert des Engels des Herrn Schrecken erfasst.
