Matthew, 27

54. The centurion and the men with him who were keeping watch over Jesus feared greatly when they saw the earthquake and all that was happening, and they said, "Truly, this was the Son of God!"

Saint Matthew 27 is the chapter that reports the crucifixion and death of Jesus. Some events occurred during their arrest and trial are also narrated. Following are five verses related to the topics covered in this chapter:

Isaiah 53:5: "But he was pierced because of our transgressions, he was crushed because of our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we were healed." John 19:26-27: "When Jesus saw his mother there, and near her the disciple whom he loved, said to his mother: woman, here is his son, and to the disciple: Here is his mother. Of that time Onwards, the disciple received her at his home. " This verse of the Gospel of John shows Jesus' care and concern with his mother and his concern to ensure that she was well cared for after her death.

Hebrews 9:28: "So Christ was also offered in sacrifice once, to take the sins of many; and will appear a second time, not to take away sin, but to bring salvation to those who await him." This verse of the Epistle to the Hebrews explains the meaning of Jesus' death as a sacrifice for our sins and the promise of his second coming to bring salvation.
