Ezekiel, 32

1. On the first day of the twelfth month in the twelfth year, the word of the LORD came to me:

1. In the twelfth year, on the first day of the twelfth month, the word of Yahweh was addressed to me as follows,

2. Son of man, utter a lament over Pharaoh, the king of Egypt, saying to him: Lion of the nations, you are destroyed. You were like a monster in the sea, spouting in your streams, Stirring the water with your feet and churning its streams.

2. 'Son of man, raise a lament for Pharaoh king of Egypt. Say to him: "Young lion of nations, you are destroyed! Once you were like a crocodile in the lagoons; emerging from your rivers, you churned up the water with your trampling and fouled their streams.

3. Thus says the Lord GOD: I will spread my net over you (with a host of many nations), and draw you up in my seine.

3. "The Lord Yahweh says this: I shall throw my net over you in a great concourse of nations; and they will trawl you up in my net. Then I shall leave you high and dry,

4. I will leave you on the land; on the open field I will cast you. I will have all the birds of the air alight on you, and all the beasts of the earth eat their fill of you.

4. I shall throw you out into the wilds and make all the birds of heaven settle on you, and glut all the beasts of the earth with you.

5. I will leave your flesh on the mountains, and fill the valleys with your carcass.

5. I shall strew your flesh on your mountains and fill the valleys with your corruption;

6. I will water the land with what flows from you, and the river beds shall be filled with your blood.

7. When I snuff you out I will cover the heavens, and all their stars I will darken; The sun I will cover with clouds, and the moon shall not give its light.

8. All the shining lights in the heavens I will darken on your account, And I will spread darkness over your land, says the Lord GOD.

8. I shall dim every luminary in heaven because of you and cover your country in darkness -declares the Lord Yahweh.

9. I will grieve the hearts of many peoples when I lead you captive among the nations, to lands which you do not know.

9. "I shall grieve the heart of many peoples when I bring about your destruction among the nations, in countries unknown to you.

10. Many peoples shall be appalled at you, and their kings shall shudder over you in horror when they see me brandish my sword, and on the day of your downfall every one of them shall continuously tremble for his own life.

10. I shall stun many peoples with shock at your fate; their kings will tremble with horror at your fate, when I brandish my sword before their eyes. The day you fall, each will tremble in terror for his life.

11. For thus says the Lord GOD: The sword of the king of Babylon shall come upon you.

11. For the Lord Yahweh says this: The sword of the king of Babylon will overtake you.

12. I will cut down your horde with the blades of warriors, all of them the most ruthless of the nations; They shall lay waste the glory of Egypt, and all her hordes shall be destroyed.

12. I shall make your throngs of subjects fall at the swords of my warriors. They are the most barbarous of nations. They will annihilate the pride of Egypt, and all its throngs will be destroyed.

13. I will have all of her animals perish beside her abundant waters; The foot of man shall stir them no longer, nor shall the hoof of beast disturb them.

13. I shall also destroy all its cattle beside the plentiful waters. No human foot will churn them, no animal foot will churn them up again;

14. Then will I make their waters clear, and their streams flow like oil, says the Lord GOD.

14. then I shall let their waters settle and make their rivers glide like oil -- declares the Lord Yahweh.

15. When I turn Egypt into a waste, the land shall be devastated of all that is in it; when I strike all who live there, they shall know that I am the LORD.

15. "When I reduce Egypt to a ruin and the country is stripped of its contents, when I strike all those who live there, they will know that I am Yahweh.

16. This is a dirge, and it shall be sung: the daughters of the nations shall chant it; over Egypt and all its hordes shall they chant it, says the Lord GOD.

16. "Such is the lament which the daughters of the nations will raise. They will raise it over Egypt and all its throng. This is the lament they will raise -- declares the Lord Yahweh." '

17. On the fifteenth day of the first month in the twelfth year, the word of the LORD came to me:

18. Son of man, lament over the throngs of Egypt, for the mighty nations have thrust them down to the bottom of the earth, with those who go down into the pit.

18. 'Son of man, lament over the throng of Egypt, for down she must go with the daughters of majestic nations to the depths of the underworld with those who sink into oblivion.

19. "Whom do you excel in beauty?

19. 'Whom do you surpass in beauty? Down with you, make your bed with the uncircumcised,

20. In the midst of those slain by the sword shall they fall, and place shall be made with them for all their hordes. Then from the midst of the nether world, the mighty warriors shall speak to Egypt:

20. with those who have been slaughtered by the sword. (The sword has been given, it has been drawn.) She and all her throngs have fallen.

21. Come down, you and your allies, lie with the uncircumcised, with those slain by the sword."

21. From the depths of Sheol, the mightiest heroes, her allies, will say to her, "They have come down, they have lain down, uncircumcised, slaughtered by the sword."

22. There is Assyria with all her company, all of them slain,

22. 'Assyria is there and all her hordes, with their graves all round her; all of them slaughtered, fallen by the sword;

23. whose graves have been made in the recesses of the pit; her company is around Egypt's grave, all of them slain, fallen by the sword, who spread terror in the land of the living.

23. their graves have been made in the deepest part of the abyss, and her hordes, with their graves all round her; all of them slaughtered, killed by the sword, who once spread terror through the world of the living.

24. There is Elam with all her throng about Egypt's grave, all of them slain, fallen by the sword: they have gone down uncircumcised to the bottom of the earth, who spread their terror in the land of the living, and they bear their disgrace with those who go down into the pit;

24. 'Elam is there and all her throng round her grave, all of them slaughtered, fallen by the sword; they have gone down uncircumcised to the depths of the underworld, who once spread terror throughout the world of the living. They have borne their shame with those who sink into oblivion.

25. in the midst of the slain they are placed.

25. Among the slaughtered, they have put a bed for her, among her throng with their tombs round her, all of them uncircumcised, slaughtered by the sword for having spread terror throughout the world of the living. They have borne their shame with those who sink into oblivion. They have been put among the slaughtered.

26. There are Meshech and Tubal and all their throng about her grave, all of them uncircumcised, slain by the sword, for they spread their terror in the land of the living.

26. 'Meshech, Tubal are there and all her throng, with their graves round her, all of them uncircumcised, slaughtered by the sword for having spread terror through the world of the living.

27. They do not lie with the mighty men fallen of old, who went down to the nether world with their weapons of war, whose swords were placed under their heads and whose shields were laid over their bones, though the mighty men caused terror in the land of the living.

27. They do not lie with the heroes who fell long ago, those who went down to Sheol fully armed, who had their swords laid under their heads and their shields put under their bones, since the heroes inspired the world of the living with terror.

28. But in the midst of the uncircumcised shall you lie, with those slain by the sword.

28. But you will be broken with the uncircumcised and lie with those slaughtered by the sword.

29. There are Edom, her kings, and all her princes, who despite their might have been placed with those slain by the sword; with the uncircumcised they lie, and with those who go down into the pit.

29. 'Edom is there, her kings and all her princes who, despite their valour, have been laid with those slaughtered by the sword. They lie with the uncircumcised, with those who sink into oblivion.

30. There are all the princes of the north and all the Sidonians, who have gone down with the slain, because of the terror their might inspired; they lie uncircumcised with those slain by the sword and bear their disgrace with those who go down to the pit.

30. 'All the princes of the north and all the Sidonians are there, who have gone down with the slaughtered, because of the terror which their power inspired. Ashamed, uncircumcised, they lie among those slaughtered by the sword and bear their shame with those who sink into oblivion.

31. When Pharaoh sees these, he shall be comforted for all his hordes slain by the sword--Pharaoh and all his army, says the Lord GOD.

31. 'Pharaoh will see them and take comfort at the sight of all this throng slaughtered by the sword -- Pharaoh and all his throng -- declares the Lord Yahweh.

32. Since he spread his terror in the land of the living, therefore is he laid to rest among the uncircumcised, with those slain by the sword--Pharaoh and all his hordes, says the Lord GOD.

32. For having spread terror through the world of the living, he will be laid with the uncircumcised, with those slaughtered by the sword, Pharaoh and all his throng -- declares the Lord Yahweh.'

32:1-2 - Dieu demande à Ézéchiel de déplorer la chute de Pharaon, roi d'Égypte, et de ses descendants, qui s'enorgueillissaient de leur puissance. La chute de Pharaon symbolise la fin de toute dépendance à la force humaine comme source de sécurité et de pouvoir (voir aussi Jérémie 46:25 et Ésaïe 14:9-11).

32:3-6 - La description des eaux déchaînées et des morts au combat illustre le carnage et la destruction qui accompagneront la chute de l'Égypte. Cela souligne la justice divine, implacable envers ceux qui s'opposent à lui (voir aussi Apocalypse 14:19-20 et Ésaïe 34:2).

32:24-30 - Le chapitre se termine par une description des rois déchus dans l'abîme, symbolisant la destruction de grandes nations, comme l'Égypte, qui servaient d'exemple aux nations survivantes. Psaumes 49:14: "Comme les moutons, ils sont destinés à la tombe et la mort les guidera. Au matin, les justes triompheront d'eux ! Leurs corps se décomposeront dans la tombe, loin de leurs luxueuses demeures." - Ce psaume reflète le thème d'Ézéchiel 32 sur la destinée finale des orgueilleux.
