Jéremie, 16

1. La parole de Yahweh me fut adressée en ces termes:

1. This message came to me from the LORD:

2. Tu ne prendras point de femme Et tu n'auras point de fils ni de filles en ce lieu.

2. Do not marry any woman; you shall not have sons or daughters in this place,

3. Car ainsi parle Yahweh touchant les fils et les filles qui naissent en ce lieu, Les mères qui les enfantent- Et les pères qui les engendrent en ce pays:

3. for thus says the LORD concerning the sons and daughters who will be born in this place, the mothers who will give them birth, the fathers who will beget them in this land:

4. Ils mourront de maladies mortelles; On ne leur donnera ni larmes ni sépulture; Ils seront du fumier sur le sol; Ils périront par l'épée et la famine, Et leurs cadavres seront la pâture Des oiseaux du ciel et des bêtes de la terre.

4. Of deadly disease they shall die. Unlamented and unburied they will lie like dung on the ground. Sword and famine will make an end of them, and their corpses will become food for the birds of the sky and the beasts of the field.

5. Car ainsi parle Yahweh: N'entre pas dans la maison de deuil; Ne va point pleurer et te lamenter avec eux; Car j'ai retiré à ce peuple ma paix, dit Yahweh, Ma grâce et ma compassion..

5. Go not into a house of mourning, the LORD continued: go not there to lament or offer sympathy. For I have withdrawn my friendship from this people, says the LORD, my kindness and my pity.

6. Grands et petits mourront dans ce pays; Ils n'auront point de sépulture et ne seront pas pleurés; On ne se fera point d'incisions, On ne se rasera point pour eux.

6. They shall die, the great and the lowly, in this land, and shall go unburied and unlamented. No one will gash himself or shave his head for them.

7. On ne leur rompra point le pain du deuil Pour les consoler au sujet d'un mort, Et on ne leur offrira pas la coupe de consolation Pour un père et pour une mère.

7. They will not break bread with the bereaved to console them in their bereavement; they will not give them the cup of consolation to drink over the death of father or mother.

8. Ne va pas dans la maison du festin pour t'asseoir avec eux, Pour manger et pour boire;

8. Enter not a house where people are celebrating, to sit with them eating and drinking.

9. Car ainsi parle Yahweh des armées, Dieu d'Israël: Je vais faire cesser en ce lieu, Sous vos yeux et de vos jours, Le cri de joie et le cri d'allégresse, Le chant du fiancé et le chant de la fiancée.

9. For thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: Before your very eyes and during your lifetime I will silence from this place the cry of joy and the cry of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride.

10. Lorsque tu annonceras toutes ces choses à ce peuple, Ils te diront: "Pourquoi Yahweh nous menace-t-il de tous ces grands malheurs? Quelle est notre iniquité, Et quel est le péché que nous avons commis Contre Yahweh, notre Dieu?"

10. When you proclaim all these words to this people and they ask you: "Why has the LORD pronounced all these great evils against us? What is our crime? What sin have we committed against the LORD, our God?"--

11. Et tu leur diras: "C'est que vos pères m'ont abandonné, dit Yahweh; Ils sont allés après d'autres dieux, Ils les ont servis, ils les ont adorés, Et moi, ils m'ont abandonné, Et n'ont pas observé ma loi.

11. you shall answer them: It is because your fathers have forsaken me, says the LORD, and followed strange gods, which they served and worshiped; but me they have forsaken, and my law they have not observed.

12. Et vous, vous avez fait pis que vos pères, Et voici que chacun de vous suit l'opiniâtreté de son mauvais c?ur, Pour ne point m'écouter.

12. And you have done worse than your fathers. Here you are, every one of you, walking in the hardness of his evil heart instead of listening to me.

13. Je vous jetterai hors de ce pays Dans un pays que vous n'aurez pas connu, Ni vous ni vos pères, Et là vous servirez les dieux étrangers nuit et jour; Car je ne vous ferai point grâce."

13. I will cast you out of this land into a land that neither you nor your fathers have known; there you can serve strange gods day and night, because I will not grant you my mercy.

14. C'est pourquoi voici, dit Yahweh, que des jours viennent Où l'on ne dira plus: Yahweh est vivant, Lui qui a fait monter du pays d'Egypte Les enfants d'Israël:

14. However, days will surely come, says the LORD, when it will no longer be said, "As the LORD lives, who brought the Israelites out of Egypt";

15. Mais: Yahweh est vivant, Lui qui a fait monter les enfants d'Israël Du pays du septentrion Et de tous les pays où il 1es...avait chassés; Et je les ramènerai dans leur pays Que j'avais donné à leurs pères.

15. but rather, "As the LORD lives, who brought the Israelites out of the land of the north and out of all the countries to which he had banished them." I will bring them back to the land which I gave their fathers.

16. Voici que j'appelle en foule Des pêcheurs pour les pêcher, dit Yahweh; Et après cela j'appellerai en foule Des chasseurs qui leur donneront la chasse Sur toutes les montagnes, sur toutes les collines Et dans les fentes des rochers.

16. Look! I will send many fishermen, says the LORD, to catch them. After that, I will send many hunters to hunt them out from every mountain and hill and from the clefts of the rocks.

17. Car mes yeux sont sur toutes leurs voies; Elles ne sont pas cachées devant ma face Et leur iniquité ne se dérobe point à mes regards.

17. For my eyes are upon all their ways; they are not hidden from me, nor does their guilt escape my view.

18. Tout d'abord je leur paierai au double Le salaire de leur iniquité et de leurs péchés, Parce qu'ils ont profané mon pays Par les cadavres de leurs infâmes idoles Et rempli mon héritage de leurs abominations.

18. I will at once repay them double for their crime and their sin of profaning my land with their detestable corpses of idols, and filling my heritage with their abominations.

19. Yahweh, ma force, mon rempart Et mon refuge au jour de la détresse, Les nations viendront à toi des extrémités de la terre Et diront: Nos Pères n'ont eu en héritage que le mensonge, Des vanités qui ne servent à rien.

19. O LORD, my strength, my fortress, my refuge in the day of distress! To you will the nations come from the ends of the earth, and say, "Mere frauds are the heritage of our fathers, empty idols of no use."

20. Se peut-il qu un homme se fasse des dieux? Et ce ne sont pas des dieux!

20. Can man make for himself gods? These are not gods.

21. C'est pourquoi je vais leur faire connaître ma main et ma puissance, Et ils sauront que mon nom est Yahweh.

21. Look, then: I will give them knowledge; this time I will leave them in no doubt Of my strength and my power: they shall know that my name is LORD.
