2 Maccabées, 7

1. Il arriva aussi qu'on prit sept frères avec leurmère, et que le roi voulut les contraindre, en lesdéchirant à coups de fouets et de nerfs de boeuf,à manger de la chair de porc, interdite par la loi.

1. It also happened that seven brothers with their mother were arrested and tortured with whips and scourges by the king, to force them to eat pork in violation of God's law.

2. L'un d'eux, prenant la parole au nom de tous, dit: "Quedemandes-tu, et que veux-tu apprendre de nous? Nous sommesprêts à mourir plutôt que de transgresser laloi de nos pères."

2. One of the brothers, speaking for the others, said: "What do you expect to achieve by questioning us? We are ready to die rather than transgress the laws of our ancestors."

3. Le roi, outré de colère, commanda de mettre surle feu des poêles et des chaudières. Aussitôtqu'elles furent brûlantes,

3. At that the king, in a fury, gave orders to have pans and caldrons heated.

4. il commanda de couper la langue à celui qui avaitparlé au nom de tous, puis de lui enlever la peau de latête et de lui trancher les extrémités, sousles yeux de ses autres frères et de leur mère.

4. While they were being quickly heated, he commanded his executioners to cut out the tongue of the one who had spoken for the others, to scalp him and cut off his hands and feet, while the rest of his brothers and his mother looked on.

5. Lorsqu'on l'eut ainsi complètement mutilé, ilordonna qu'on l'approchât du feu, respirant encore, etqu'on le fît rôtir dans la poêle. Pendant quela vapeur de la poêle se répandait au loin, sesfrères et leur mère s'exhortaient mutuellementà mourir avec courage:

5. When he was completely maimed but still breathing, the king ordered them to carry him to the fire and fry him. As a cloud of smoke spread from the pan, the brothers and their mother encouraged one another to die bravely, saying such words as these:

6. "Le Seigneur Dieu voit, disaient-ils, et il a vraimentcompassion de nous, selon que Moïse l'a annoncé, dansle cantique qui proteste en face contre Israël, en disant:Il aura pitié de ses serviteurs."

6. "The Lord God is looking on, and he truly has compassion on us, as Moses declared in his canticle, when he protested openly with the words, 'And he will have pity on his servants.'"

7. Le premier étant mort de cette manière, on amenale second pour le supplice, et après lui avoirarraché la peau de la tête avec les cheveux, on luidemanda s'il voulait manger du porc avant d'êtretorturé dans tous les membres de son corps.

7. When the first brother had died in this manner, they brought the second to be made sport of. After tearing off the skin and hair of his head, they asked him, "Will you eat the pork rather than have your body tortured limb by limb?"

8. Il répondit dans la langue de ses pères: " Non!"C'est pourquoi il subit à son tour les mêmestourments que le premier.

8. Answering in the language of his forefathers, he said, "Never!" So he too in turn suffered the same tortures as the first.

9. Au moment de rendre le dernier soupir, il dit:"Scélérat que tu es, tu nous ôtes la vieprésente, mais le Roi de l'univers nous ressuscitera pourune vie éternelle, nous qui mourons pour êtrefidèles à ses lois."

9. At the point of death he said: "You accursed fiend, you are depriving us of this present life, but the King of the world will raise us up to live again forever. It is for his laws that we are dying."

10. Après lui, on tortura le troisième. A la demandedu bourreau, il présenta aussitôt sa langue ettendit intrépidement ses mains,

10. After him the third suffered their cruel sport. He put out his tongue at once when told to do so, and bravely held out his hands,

11. et il dit avec un noble courage: "Je tiens ces membres duCiel, mais à cause de ses lois je les méprise, etc'est de Lui que j'espère les recouvrer un jour."

11. as he spoke these noble words: "It was from Heaven that I received these; for the sake of his laws I disdain them; from him I hope to receive them again."

12. Le roi lui-même et ceux qui l'accompagnaient furentfrappés du courage de ce jeune homme, qui comptait pourrien les tortures.

12. Even the king and his attendants marveled at the young man's courage, because he regarded his sufferings as nothing.

13. Lui mort, on fit subir au quatrième les mêmestourments.

13. After he had died, they tortured and maltreated the fourth brother in the same way.

14. Sur le point d'expirer, il dit: "Heureux ceux qui meurent dela main des hommes, avec l'espérance qu'ils tiennent deDieu d'être ressuscités par lui! Pour toi, tarésurrection ne sera point pour la vie."

14. When he was near death, he said, "It is my choice to die at the hands of men with the God-given hope of being restored to life by him; but for you, there will be no resurrection to life."

15. On amena ensuite le cinquième, et on le tortura. Maislui, fixant les yeux sur le roi, dit:

15. They next brought forward the fifth brother and maltreated him. Looking at the king,

16. "Tu as, quoique mortel, pouvoir parmi les hommes, et tu faisce que tu veux. Mais ne crois pas que notre race soitabandonnée de Dieu.

16. he said: "Since you have power among men, mortal though you are, do what you please. But do not think that our nation is forsaken by God.

17. Pour toi, attends, et tu verras sa grande puissance, comme ilte tourmentera toi et ta race."

17. Only wait, and you will see how his great power will torment you and your descendants."

18. Après lui, on amena le sixième. Près demourir, il dit: " Ne te fais pas de vaine illusion; c'estnous-mêmes qui nous sommes attiré ces maux, enpéchant contre notre Dieu; aussi nous est-il arrivéd'étranges calamités.

18. After him they brought the sixth brother. When he was about to die, he said: "Have no vain illusions. We suffer these things on our own account, because we have sinned against our God; that is why such astonishing things have happened to us.

19. Mais toi, ne t'imagines pas que tu seras impuni, aprèsavoir osé combattre contre Dieu."

19. Do not think, then, that you will go unpunished for having dared to fight against God."

20. La mère, admirable au-dessus de toute expression etdigne d'une illustre mémoire, voyant mourir ses sept filsdans l'espace d'un seul jour, le supportagénéreusement, soutenue par son espérancedans le Seigneur.

20. Most admirable and worthy of everlasting remembrance was the mother, who saw her seven sons perish in a single day, yet bore it courageously because of her hope in the Lord.

21. Elle exhortait chacun d'eux en la langue de ses pèreset, remplie des plus nobles sentiments, elle raffermissait par unmâle courage sa tendresse de femme.

21. Filled with a noble spirit that stirred her womanly heart with manly courage, she exhorted each of them in the language of their forefathers with these words:

22. Elle leur disait: " Je ne sais comment vous avez apparu dansmes entrailles; ce n'est pas moi qui vous ai donnél'esprit et la vie; ce n'est pas moi qui ai assemblé leséléments qui composent votre corps.

22. "I do not know how you came into existence in my womb; it was not I who gave you the breath of life, nor was it I who set in order the elements of which each of you is composed.

23. C'est pourquoi le Créateur du monde, qui a formél'homme à sa naissance et qui préside àl'origine de toutes choses, vous rendra dans samiséricorde et l'esprit et la vie, parce que maintenantvous vous méprisez vous-mêmes pour l'amour de saloi."

23. Therefore, since it is the Creator of the universe who shapes each man's beginning, as he brings about the origin of everything, he, in his mercy, will give you back both breath and life, because you now disregard yourselves for the sake of his law." Martyrdom of Mother and Sons

24. Antiochus se crut insulté et soupçonna unoutrage dans ces paroles. Comme le plus jeune était encoreen vie, non seulement il lui adressa des exhortations, mais illui promit avec serment de le rendre riche et heureux, s'ilabandonnait les lois de ses pères, d'en faire son ami etde lui confier de hauts emplois.

24. Antiochus, suspecting insult in her words, thought he was being ridiculed. As the youngest brother was still alive, the king appealed to him, not with mere words, but with promises on oath, to make him rich and happy if he would abandon his ancestral customs: he would make him his Friend and entrust him with high office.

25. Le jeune homme ne prêtant à ces offres aucuneattention, le roi appela la mère et l'engagea àdonner à l'adolescent des conseils de salut.

25. When the youth paid no attention to him at all, the king appealed to the mother, urging her to advise her boy to save his life.

26. Lorsqu'il l'eut longtemps exhortée, elle accepta depersuader son fils.

26. After he had urged her for a long time, she went through the motions of persuading her son.

27. S'étant donc penchée vers lui et raillant letyran cruel, elle parla ainsi dans la langue de ses pères:"Mon fils, aie pitié de moi, qui t'ai porté neufmois dans mon sein, qui t'ai allaité trois ans, qui t'aientretenu, nourri et élevé jusqu'àl'âge où tu es.

27. In derision of the cruel tyrant, she leaned over close to her son and said in their native language: "Son, have pity on me, who carried you in my womb for nine months, nursed you for three years, brought you up, educated and supported you to your present age.

28. Je t'en conjure, mon enfant, regarde le ciel et la terre, voistout ce qu'ils contiennent, et sache que Dieu les acréés de rien, et que la race des hommes estarrivée ainsi à l'existence.

28. I beg you, child, to look at the heavens and the earth and see all that is in them; then you will know that God did not make them out of existing things; and in the same way the human race came into existence.

29. Ne crains pas ce bourreau, mais sois digne de tesfrères et accepte la mort, afin que je te retrouve, avectes frères, au temps de la miséricorde."

29. Do not be afraid of this executioner, but be worthy of your brothers and accept death, so that in the time of mercy I may receive you again with them."

30. Comme elle parlait encore, le jeune homme dit: "Qu'attendez-vous? Je n'obéis pas aux ordres du roi;j'obéis aux prescriptions de la loi qui aété donnée par Moise à nospères.

30. She had scarcely finished speaking when the youth said: "What are you waiting for? I will not obey the king's command. I obey the command of the law given to our forefathers through Moses.

31. Et toi, l'auteur de tous les mauxdéchaînés sur les Hébreux, tun'éviteras pas le bras de Dieu.

31. But you, who have contrived every kind of affliction for the Hebrews, will not escape the hands of God.

32. Car c'est à cause de nos péchés que noussouffrons;

32. We, indeed, are suffering because of our sins.

33. et si, pour nous châtier et nous corriger, notreSeigneur, qui est vivant, nous a montré un moment sacolère, il se réconciliera avec ses serviteurs.

33. Though our living Lord treats us harshly for a little while to correct us with chastisements, he will again be reconciled with his servants.

34. Mais toi, ô impie et le plus scélérat detous les hommes, ne t'enorgueillis pas follement, te livrantà de vaines espérances, quand tu lèves lamain contre les serviteurs de Dieu;

34. But you, wretch, vilest of all men! do not, in your insolence, concern yourself with unfounded hopes, as you raise your hand against the children of Heaven.

35. car tu n'as pas encore échappé au jugement duDieu tout-puissant qui surveille toutes choses.

35. You have not yet escaped the judgment of the almighty and all-seeing God.

36. Nos frères, après avoir enduré unesouffrance passagère, sont échus àl'alliance de Dieu pour une vie éternelle; mais toi, parle jugement de Dieu, tu porteras le juste châtiment de tonorgueil.

36. My brothers, after enduring brief pain, have drunk of never-failing life, under God's covenant, but you, by the judgment of God, shall receive just punishments for your arrogance.

37. Quant à moi, ainsi que mes frères, je livre moncorps et ma vie pour les lois de mes pères, suppliant Dieud'être bientôt propice envers son peuple et det'amener, par les tourments et la souffrance, à confesserqu'il est le seul Dieu,

37. Like my brothers, I offer up my body and my life for our ancestral laws, imploring God to show mercy soon to our nation, and by afflictions and blows to make you confess that he alone is God.

38. et puisse, en moi et en mes frères, s'arrêter lacolère du Tout-Puissant, justementdéchaînée sur toute notre race!"

38. Through me and my brothers, may there be an end to the wrath of the Almighty that has justly fallen on our whole nation."

39. Le roi, transporté de fureur, sévit contrecelui-ci plus cruellement encore que contre les autres, nepouvant supporter qu'on se jouât de lui.

39. At that, the king became enraged and treated him even worse than the others, since he bitterly resented the boy's contempt.

40. Ainsi mourut ce jeune homme, pur de toute idolâtrie etse confiant entièrement au Seigneur.

40. Thus he too died undefiled, putting all his trust in the Lord.

41. Enfin la mère mourut la dernière, aprèsses enfants.

41. The mother was last to die, after her sons.

42. Mais en voilà assez au sujet des sacrifices et desexcessives cruautés d'Antiochus.

42. Enough has been said about the sacrificial meals and the excessive cruelties.
