Liber Iudicum, 3

1. Hae sunt gentes, quas Dominus dereliquit, ut erudiret in eis Is raelem, omnes, qui non noverant bella Chananaeorum,

1. Now these are the nations which the LORD left, to test Israel by them, that is, all in Israel who had no experience of any war in Canaan;

2. ut discerent certare cum hostibus generationes filiorum Israel, quae non habebant consuetudinem proeliandi:

2. it was only that the generations of the people of Israel might know war, that he might teach war to such at least as had not known it before.

3. quinque satrapae Philisthinorum omnisque Chananaeus et Sidonius atque Hevaeus, qui habitabat in monte Libano de monte Baalhermon usque ad introitum Emath.

3. These are the nations: the five lords of the Philistines, and all the Canaanites, and the Sido'nians, and the Hivites who dwelt on Mount Lebanon, from Mount Ba'al-her'mon as far as the entrance of Hamath.

4. Dimisitque eos, ut in ipsis experiretur Israelem, utrum audiret mandata Domini, quae praeceperat patribus eorum per manum Moysi, an non.

4. They were for the testing of Israel, to know whether Israel would obey the commandments of the LORD, which he commanded their fathers by Moses.

5. Itaque filii Israel habitaverunt in medio Chananaei et Hetthaei et Amorraei et Pherezaei et Hevaei et Iebusaei

5. So the people of Israel dwelt among the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Per'izzites, the Hivites, and the Jeb'usites;

6. et duxerunt uxores filias eorum, ipsique filias suas eorum filiis tradiderunt, et servierunt diis eorum.

6. and they took their daughters to themselves for wives, and their own daughters they gave to their sons; and they served their gods.

7. Feceruntque filii Israel malum in conspectu Domini et obliti sunt Domini Dei sui servientes Baalim et Astharoth.

7. And the people of Israel did what was evil in the sight of the LORD, forgetting the LORD their God, and serving the Ba'als and the Ashe'roth.

8. Iratusque Dominus contra Israel tradidit eos in manus Chusanrasathaim regis Mesopotamiae, servieruntque ei octo annis.

8. Therefore the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel, and he sold them into the hand of Cu'shan-rishatha'im king of Mesopota'mia; and the people of Israel served Cu'shan-rishatha'im eight years.

9. Et clamaverunt ad Dominum, qui suscitavit eis salvatorem et liberavit eos, Othoniel videlicet filium Cenez fratrem Chaleb minorem.

9. But when the people of Israel cried to the LORD, the LORD raised up a deliverer for the people of Israel, who delivered them, Oth'ni-el the son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother.

10. Fuitque in eo spiritus Domini, et iudicavit Israelem egressusque est ad pugnam; et tradidit Dominus in manu eius Chusanrasathaim regem Mesopotamiae, et praevaluit adversus eum.

10. The Spirit of the LORD came upon him, and he judged Israel; he went out to war, and the LORD gave Cu'shan-rishatha'im king of Mesopota'mia into his hand; and his hand prevailed over Cu'shan-rishatha'im.

11. Quievitque terra quadraginta annis, et mortuus est Othoniel filius Cenez.

11. So the land had rest forty years. Then Oth'ni-el the son of Kenaz died.

12. Addiderunt autem filii Israel facere malum in conspectu Domini, qui confortavit adversum eos Eglon regem Moab, quia fecerunt malum in conspectu Domini.

12. And the people of Israel again did what was evil in the sight of the LORD; and the LORD strengthened Eglon the king of Moab against Israel, because they had done what was evil in the sight of the LORD.

13. Et copulavit sibi Eglon filios Ammon et Amalec abiitque et percussit Israel atque possedit urbem Palmarum.

13. He gathered to himself the Ammonites and the Amal'ekites, and went and defeated Israel; and they took possession of the city of palms.

14. Servieruntque filii Israel Eglon regi Moab decem et octo annis.

14. And the people of Israel served Eglon the king of Moab eighteen years.

15. Et clamaverunt filii Israel ad Dominum, qui suscitavit eis salvatorem Aod filium Gera de Beniamin, qui sinistra manu utebatur pro dextera. Miseruntque filii Israel per illum munera Eglon regi Moab.

15. But when the people of Israel cried to the LORD, the LORD raised up for them a deliverer, Ehud, the son of Gera, the Benjaminite, a left-handed man. The people of Israel sent tribute by him to Eglon the king of Moab.

16. Fecitque Aod sibi gladium ancipitem longitudinis palmae manus et accinctus est eo subter vestem in dextro femore

16. And Ehud made for himself a sword with two edges, a cubit in length; and he girded it on his right thigh under his clothes.

17. obtulitque munera Eglon regi Moab. Erat autem Eglon crassus nimis.

17. And he presented the tribute to Eglon king of Moab. Now Eglon was a very fat man.

18. Cumque obtulisset ei munera, dimisit socios, qui illa portaverant;

18. And when Ehud had finished presenting the tribute, he sent away the people that carried the tribute.

19. et reversus de Galgalis, ubi erant idola, dixit ad regem: “Verbum secretum habeo ad te, o rex”. Et ille imperavit silentium; egressique sunt omnes, qui circa eum erant.

19. But he himself turned back at the sculptured stones near Gilgal, and said, "I have a secret message for you, O king." And he commanded, "Silence." And all his attendants went out from his presence.

20. Aod autem ingressus erat ad eum, cum sederet in aestivo cenaculo, quod ipsi soli erat, dixitque: “Verbum Dei habeo ad te”. Qui statim surrexit de throno.

20. And Ehud came to him, as he was sitting alone in his cool roof chamber. And Ehud said, "I have a message from God for you." And he arose from his seat.

21. Extenditque Aod manum sinistram et tulit sicam de dextro femore suo infixitque eam in ventre eius

21. And Ehud reached with his left hand, took the sword from his right thigh, and thrust it into his belly;

22. tam valide, ut capulus ferrum sequeretur in vulnere ac pinguissimo adipe stringeretur. Nec eduxit gladium, sed ita, ut percusserat, reliquit in corpore; statimque per secreta naturae alvi stercora proruperunt.

22. and the hilt also went in after the blade, and the fat closed over the blade, for he did not draw the sword out of his belly; and the dirt came out.

23. Aod autem egressus in atrium clausit ostium cenaculi post se et obfirmavit sera.

23. Then Ehud went out into the vestibule, and closed the doors of the roof chamber upon him, and locked them.

24. Egresso illo, servi regis venerunt et, cum viderent clausas fores cenaculi, dixerunt: “Certe purgat alvum in aestivo cubiculo”.

24. When he had gone, the servants came; and when they saw that the doors of the roof chamber were locked, they thought, "He is only relieving himself in the closet of the cool chamber."

25. Exspectantesque diu, donec erubescerent, et videntes quod nullus aperiret, tulerunt clavem et aperientes invenerunt dominum suum iacentem in terra mortuum.

25. And they waited till they were utterly at a loss; but when he still did not open the doors of the roof chamber, they took the key and opened them; and there lay their lord dead on the floor.

26. Aod autem, dum illi cunctarentur, effugerat et pertransiit locum idolorum, unde reversus fuerat, venitque in Seira.

26. Ehud escaped while they delayed, and passed beyond the sculptured stones, and escaped to Se-i'rah.

27. Et statim insonuit bucina in monte Ephraim; descenderuntque cum eo filii Israel, ipso in fronte gradiente.

27. When he arrived, he sounded the trumpet in the hill country of E'phraim; and the people of Israel went down with him from the hill country, having him at their head.

28. Qui dixit ad eos: “Sequimini me; tradidit enim Dominus inimicos vestros Moabitas in manus vestras”. Descenderuntque post eum et occupaverunt vada Iordanis, quae transmittunt in Moab, et non dimiserunt transire quemquam,

28. And he said to them, "Follow after me; for the LORD has given your enemies the Moabites into your hand." So they went down after him, and seized the fords of the Jordan against the Moabites, and allowed not a man to pass over.

29. sed percusserunt Moabitas in tempore illo circiter decem milia, omnes robustos et fortes viros. Nullus eorum evadere potuit.

29. And they killed at that time about ten thousand of the Moabites, all strong, able-bodied men; not a man escaped.

30. Humiliatusque est Moab die illo sub manu Israel; et quievit terra octoginta annis.

30. So Moab was subdued that day under the hand of Israel. And the land had rest for eighty years.

31. Post hunc fuit Samgar filius Anath, qui percussit de Philisthim sescentos viros stimulo boum; et ipse quoque salvum fecit Israel.

31. After him was Shamgar the son of Anath, who killed six hundred of the Philistines with an oxgoad; and he too delivered Israel.
