Matthieu, 3

1. En ces jours-là parut Jeanle Baptiste, prêchant dans le désert de Judée, et disant:

1. In those days John the Baptist appeared, preaching in the desert of Judea

2. " Repentez-vous, car le royaumedes cieux est proche. "

2. (and) saying, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand!"

3. C'est lui en effet dont a parléle prophète Isaïe, disant : Voix de celui qui crie dans ledésert : Préparez le chemin du Seigneur,aplanissez ses sentiers.

3. It was of him that the prophet Isaiah had spoken when he said: "A voice of one crying out in the desert, 'Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths.'"

4. Et lui, Jean, avait un vêtementde poil de chameau, et autour de ses reins une ceinture de cuir, et il se nourrissait de sauterelleset de miel sauvage.

4. John wore clothing made of camel's hair and had a leather belt around his waist. His food was locusts and wild honey.

5. Alors venaient à lui Jérusalem,et toute la Judée, et toute la région du Jourdain.

5. At that time Jerusalem, all Judea, and the whole region around the Jordan were going out to him

6. Et, confessant leurs péchés,ils se faisaient baptiser par lui dans le fleuve du Jourdain.

6. and were being baptized by him in the Jordan River as they acknowledged their sins.

7. Voyant un grand nombre de Pharisienset de Sadducéens venir à son baptême, il leur dit : " Race de vipères, qui vousa appris à fuir la colère qui vient?

7. When he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them, "You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath?

8. Faites donc de dignes fruits derepentir.

8. Produce good fruit as evidence of your repentance.

9. Et ne vous avisez pas de direen vous-mêmes : Nous avons Abraham pour père; car je vous dis que de ces pierres mêmesDieu peut faire naître des enfants à Abraham. 10 Déjà la cognéeest à la racine des arbres : tout arbre donc qui ne porte pas debon fruit sera coupé et jeté au feu.

9. And do not presume to say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham as our father.' For I tell you, God can raise up children to Abraham from these stones.

10. Even now the ax lies at the root of the trees. Therefore every tree that does not bear good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.

11. Moi, je vous baptise dans l'eaupour le repentir; mais celui qui vient après moi est plus puissant que moi, et je ne suispas digne de porter ses sandales; lui, il vous baptisera dans l'Esprit-Saint et le feu.

11. I am baptizing you with water, for repentance, but the one who is coming after me is mightier than I. I am not worthy to carry his sandals. He will baptize you with the holy Spirit and fire.

12. Dans sa main est le van : ilnettoiera son aire, il amassera son froment dans le grenier, et il brûlera la paille dans unfeu qui ne s'éteint point. "

12. His winnowing fan is in his hand. He will clear his threshing floor and gather his wheat into his barn, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire."

13. Alors parut Jésus, venantde Galilée au Jourdain vers Jean, pour être baptisépar lui.

13. Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan to be baptized by him.

14. Jean s'en défendait endisant : " C'est moi qui ai besoin d'être baptisé par vous,et vous venez à moi! "

14. John tried to prevent him, saying, "I need to be baptized by you, and yet you are coming to me?"

15. Jésus lui répondit: " Laisse faire maintenant, car il convient que nous accomplissions ainsi toute justice. " Alors Jean le laissafaire.

15. Jesus said to him in reply, "Allow it now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness." Then he allowed him.

16. Jésus ayant étébaptisé sortit aussitôt de l'eau, et voilà que lescieux s'ouvrirent pour lui, et il vit l'Esprit de Dieu descendre commeune colombe et venir sur lui.

16. After Jesus was baptized, he came up from the water and behold, the heavens were opened (for him), and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove (and) coming upon him.

17. Et voilà que ces cieuxune voix disait : " Celui-ci est mon Fils bien-aimé, en qui j'aimis mes complaisances. "

17. And a voice came from the heavens, saying, "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased."
