Deutéronome, 25

1. Quand il s'élèvera une contestation entre deshommes, et qu'ils se seront présentés au jugement,qu'on les aura jugés, qu'on aura absous l'innocent etcondamné le coupable,

1. "When men have a dispute and bring it to court, and a decision is handed down to them acquitting the innocent party and condemning the guilty party,

2. si le coupable a mérité d'être battu, lejuge le fera étendre par terre et battre en saprésence d'un nombre de coups proportionné àsa faute.

2. if the latter deserves stripes, the judge shall have him lie down and in his presence receive the number of stripes his guilt deserves.

3. Il ne lui fera pas donner plus de quarante coups, de peur que,si on continuait à le frapper de beaucoup de coups en plusde ceux-là, ton frère ne fût avili àtes yeux.

3. Forty stripes may be given him, but no more; lest, if he were beaten with more stripes than these, your kinsman should be looked upon as disgraced because of the severity of the beating.

4. Tu ne muselleras pas le boeuf, quand il foulera le grain.

4. "You shall not muzzle an ox when it is treading out grain.

5. Lorsque des frères demeurent ensemble, et que l'un d'euxmeurt sans laisser de fils, la femme du défunt ne semariera pas au dehors, à un étranger; mais sonbeau-frère ira vers elle, la prendra pour femme, etremplira envers elle le devoir de beau-frère.

5. "When brothers live together and one of them dies without a son, the widow of the deceased shall not marry anyone outside the family; but her husband's brother shall go to her and perform the duty of a brother-in-law by marrying her.

6. Le premier-né qu'elle mettra au monde succéderaau frère défunt et prendra son nom, afin que ce nomne soit pas effacé d'Israël.

6. The first-born son she bears shall continue the line of the deceased brother, that his name may not be blotted out from Israel.

7. S'il ne plaît pas à cet homme de prendre sabelle-soeur, sa belle-soeur montera à la porte, vers lesanciens, et dira: «Mon beau-frère refuse de fairerevivre le nom de son frère en Israël; il ne veut pasremplir, en m'épousant, son devoir debeau-frère.»

7. If, however, a man does not care to marry his brother's wife, she shall go up to the elders at the gate and declare, 'My brother-in-law does not intend to perform his duty toward me and refuses to perpetuate his brother's name in Israel.'

8. Alors les anciens de la ville l'appelleront et luiparleront.

8. Thereupon the elders of his city shall summon him and admonish him. If he persists in saying, 'I am not willing to marry her,'

9. S'il persiste et dit: «Il ne me plaît pas de laprendre,» sa belle-soeur s'approchera de lui enprésence des anciens, lui ôteras son soulier du piedet lui crachera au visage, en disant: «Ainsi sera faità l'homme qui ne relève pas la maison de sonfrère.»

9. his sister-in-law, in the presence of the elders, shall go up to him and strip his sandal from his foot and spit in his face, saying publicly, 'This is how one should be treated who will not build up his brother's family!'

10. Et sa maison sera appelée en Israël la maison dudéchaussé.

10. And his lineage shall be spoken of in Israel as 'the family of the man stripped of his sandal.'

11. Lorsque des hommes se battront ensemble, un homme et sonfrère, si la femme de l'un s'approche pour délivrerson mari de la main de celui qui le frappe, et que,avançant la main, elle saisisse ce dernier par les partieshonteuses,

11. "When two men are fighting and the wife of one intervenes to save her husband from the blows of his opponent, if she stretches out her hand and seizes the latter by his private parts,

12. tu lui couperas la main; ton oeil sera sans pitié.

12. you shall chop off her hand without pity.

13. Tu n'auras pas dans ton sac deux sortes de poids, un gros etun petit.

13. "You shall not keep two differing weights in your bag, one large and the other small;

14. Tu n'auras pas dans ta maison deux sortes d'épha, ungrand et un petit.

14. nor shall you keep two different measures in your house, one large and the other small.

15. Tu auras un poids exact et juste, tu auras un éphaexact et juste, afin que tes jours se prolongent dans la terreque te donne Yahweh, ton Dieu.

15. But use a true and just weight, and a true and just measure, that you may have a long life on the land which the LORD, your God, is giving you.

16. Car il est en abomination à Yahweh, ton Dieu, celui quifait ces choses, qui commet une iniquité.

16. Everyone who is dishonest in any of these matters is an abomination to the LORD, your God.

17. Souviens-toi de ce que te fit Amalec pendant le voyage,lorsque tu sortis de l'Egypte,

17. "Bear in mind what Amalek did to you on the journey after you left Egypt,

18. comment il te rencontra en route, et tomba sur toi parderrière, sur tous ceux qui étaientépuisés derrière toi, et toi tu étaisfatigué et sans force, et il n'eut aucune crainte deDieu.

18. how without fear of any god he harassed you along the way, weak and weary as you were, and cut off at the rear all those who lagged behind.

19. Quand Yahweh, ton Dieu, t'aura donné du repos, t'ayantdélivré de tous tes ennemis d'alentour, dans lepays que Yahweh, ton Dieu, te donne en héritage pour leposséder, tu effaceras la mémoire d'Amalec dedessous le ciel: ne l'oublie point.

19. Therefore, when the LORD, your God, gives you rest from all your enemies round about in the land which he is giving you to occupy as your heritage, you shall blot out the memory of Amalek from under the heavens. Do not forget!
