Ecclésiaste (or Qohélet), 3

1. Il y a un temps fixé pour tout, un temps pour toute chose sous le ciel:

1. There is an appointed time for everything, and a time for every affair under the heavens.

2. Un temps pour naître, et un temps pour mourir; un temps pour planter, et un temps pour arracher ce qui a été planté;

2. A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to uproot the plant.

3. Un temps pour tuer, et un temps pour guérir; un temps pour abattre, et un temps pour bâtir;

3. A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to tear down, and a time to build.

4. Un temps pour pleurer, et un temps pour rire; un temps pour se lamenter, et un temps pour danser;

5. Un temps pour jeter des pierres, et un temps pour en ramasser; un temps pour embrasser, et un temps pour s'abstenir d'embrassements.

5. A time to scatter stones, and a time to gather them; a time to embrace, and a time to be far from embraces.

6. Un temps pour chercher et un temps pour perdre; un temps pour garder, et un temps pour jeter;

7. Un temps pour déchirer, et un temps pour coudre; un temps pour se taire, et un temps pour parler;

7. A time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to be silent, and a time to speak.

8. Un temps pour aimer, et un temps pour haïr; un temps pour la guerre, et un temps pour la paix;

10. I have considered the task which God has appointed for men to be busied about.

11. Dieu a fait toute chose belle en son temps, il a mis aussi dans leur c?ur l'éternité, mais sans que l'homme puisse comprendre l'?uvre que Dieu fait, du commencement jusqu'à la fin.

11. He has made everything appropriate to its time, and has put the timeless into their hearts, without men's ever discovering, from beginning to end, the work which God has done.

12. Et j'ai reconnu qu'il n'y a rien de meilleur pour eux que de se réjouir et se donner du bien-être pendant leur vie,

12. I recognized that there is nothing better than to be glad and to do well during life.

13. Et en même temps que si un homme mange et boit, et jouit du bien-être au milieu de son travail, c'est là un don de Dieu.

13. For every man, moreover, to eat and drink and enjoy the fruit of all his labor is a gift of God.

14. J'ai reconnu que tout ce que Dieu fait durera toujours, qu'il n'y a rien à y ajouter ni rien à en retrancher: Dieu agit ainsi afin qu'on le craigne.

14. I recognized that whatever God does will endure forever; there is no adding to it, or taking from it. Thus has God done that he may be revered.

15. Ce qui se fait existait déjà, et ce qui se fera a déjà été: Dieu ramène ce qui est passé.

15. What now is has already been; what is to be, already is; and God restores what would otherwise be displaced.

16. J'ai encore vu sous le soleil, qu'au siège même du droit il y a la méchanceté, et au lieu de la justice, il y a l'iniquité.

16. And still under the sun in the judgment place I saw wickedness, and in the seat of justice, iniquity.

17. J'ai dit dans mon c?ur: "Dieu jugera le juste et le méchant, car il y a là un temps pour toute chose, et pour toute ?uvre."

17. And I said to myself, both the just and the wicked God will judge, since there is a time for every affair and on every work a judgment.

18. J'ai dit dans mon c?ur au sujet des enfants des hommes: " Cela arrive ainsi, afin que Dieu les éprouve, et qu'ils voient qu'ils sont quant à eux-mêmes semblables aux bêtes."

18. I said to myself: As for the children of men, it is God's way of testing them and of showing that they are in themselves like beasts.

Car le sort des enfants des homes est le sort de la bête: ils ont un même sort; comme l'un meurt, l'autre meurt aussi, il n'y a qu'un même souffle pour tous; l'avantage de l'homme sur la bête est nul, car tout est vanité. 20.Tout va dans un même lieu; tout est sorti de la poussière, et tout retourne à la poussière.

19. For the lot of man and of beast is one lot; the one dies as well as the other. Both have the same life-breath, and man has no advantage over the beast; but all is vanity.

20. Both go to the same place; both were made from the dust, and to the dust they both return.

21. Qui connaît le souffle des enfants des hommes, qui monte en haut, et le souffle de la bête qui descend en bas vers la terre?

21. Who knows if the life-breath of the children of men goes upward and the life-breath of beasts goes earthward?

22. Et j'ai vu qu'il n'y a rien de mieux pour l'homme que de se réjouir dans ses ?uvres: c'est là sa part. car qui lui donnera de découvrir ce qui arrivera après lui?

22. And I saw that there is nothing better for a man than to rejoice in his work; for this is his lot. Who will let him see what is to come after him?
