Psalms, 49

1. [For the choirmaster Of the sons of Korah Psalm] Hear this, all nations, listen, all who dwell on earth,

1. [Für den Chormeister. Ein Psalm der Korachiter.]

2. people high and low, rich and poor alike!

2. Hört dies an, ihr Völker alle, / vernehmt es, alle Bewohner der Erde,

3. My lips have wisdom to utter, my heart good sense to whisper.

3. ihr Leute aus dem Volk und vom Adel, / Reiche und Arme zusammen!

4. I listen carefully to a proverb, I set my riddle to the music of the harp.

4. Mein Mund spreche weise Worte; / was mein Herz ersinnt, sei voller Einsicht.

5. Why should I be afraid in times of trouble? Malice dogs me and hems me in.

5. Ich wende mein Ohr einem Weisheitsspruch zu, / ich enthülle mein Geheimnis beim Harfenspiel.

6. They trust in their wealth, and boast of the profusion of their riches.

6. Warum soll ich mich in bösen Tagen fürchten, / wenn mich der Frevel tückischer Feinde umgibt?

7. But no one can ever redeem himself or pay his own ransom to God,

7. Sie verlassen sich ganz auf ihren Besitz / und rühmen sich ihres großen Reichtums.

8. the price for himself is too high; it can never be

8. Loskaufen kann doch keiner den andern / noch an Gott für ihn ein Sühnegeld zahlen

9. that he will live on for ever and avoid the sight of the abyss.

9. - für das Leben ist jeder Kaufpreis zu hoch, / für immer muss man davon abstehn -,

10. For he will see the wise also die no less than the fool and the brute, and leave their wealth behind for others.

10. damit er auf ewig weiterlebt / und niemals das Grab schaut.

11. For ever no home but their tombs, their dwelling-place age after age, though they gave their name to whole territories.

11. Denn man sieht: Weise sterben; / genauso gehen Tor und Narr zugrunde, / sie müssen andern ihren Reichtum lassen.

12. In prosperity people lose their good sense, they become no better than dumb animals.

12. Das Grab ist ihr Haus auf ewig, / ist ihre Wohnung für immer, / ob sie auch Länder nach ihren Namen benannten.

13. So they go on in their self-assurance, right up to the end they are content with their lot.Pause

13. Der Mensch bleibt nicht in seiner Pracht; / er gleicht dem Vieh, das verstummt.

14. They are penned in Sheol like sheep, Death will lead them to pasture, and those who are honest will rule over them. In the morning all trace of them will be gone, Sheol will be their home.

14. So geht es denen, die auf sich selbst vertrauen, / und so ist das Ende derer, die sich in großen Worten gefallen. [Sela]

15. But my soul God will ransom from the clutches of Sheol, and will snatch me up.Pause

15. Der Tod führt sie auf seine Weide wie Schafe, / sie stürzen hinab zur Unterwelt. Geradewegs sinken sie hinab in das Grab; / ihre Gestalt zerfällt, die Unterwelt wird ihre Wohnstatt.

16. Do not be overawed when someone gets rich, and lives in ever greater splendour;

16. Doch Gott wird mich loskaufen aus dem Reich des Todes, / ja, er nimmt mich auf. [Sela]

17. when he dies he will take nothing with him, his wealth will not go down with him.

17. Lass dich nicht beirren, wenn einer reich wird / und die Pracht seines Hauses sich mehrt;

18. Though he pampered himself while he lived -- and people praise you for looking after yourself-

18. denn im Tod nimmt er das alles nicht mit, / seine Pracht steigt nicht mit ihm hinab.

19. he will go to join the ranks of his ancestors, who will never again see the light.

19. Preist er sich im Leben auch glücklich / und sagt zu sich: / «Man lobt dich, weil du dir's wohl sein lässt»,

20. In prosperity people lose their good sense, they become no better than dumb animals.

20. so muss er doch zur Schar seiner Väter hinab, / die das Licht nie mehr erblicken.

21. Der Mensch in Pracht, doch ohne Einsicht, / er gleicht dem Vieh, das verstummt.
