1. Alors tous les chefs de troupes, ainsi que Johanan, fils de Caréa, Jezonias, fils d'Osaïas, et tout le peuple, petits et grands,

1. Then all the army leaders, Johanan, son of Kareah, Azariah, son of Hoshaiah, and all the people, high and low, approached the prophet Jeremiah

2. s'approchèrent et dirent à Jérémie: "Que notre prière soit agréée devant toi, et intercède en notre faveur auprès de Yahweh, ton Dieu, pour tout ce reste de Juda; car, de beaucoup que nous étions, nous sommes réduits à un petit nombre, comme tes yeux nous voient;

2. and said, "Grant our petition; pray for us to the LORD, your God, for all this remnant. We are now few who once were many, as you well see.

4. Jérémie, le prophète, leur répondit: "J'ai entendu; je vais prier Yahweh, votre Dieu, selon votre demande, et tout ce que Yahweh vous répondra, je vous le ferai. connaître, sans vous rien cacher."

7. Au bout de dix jours, la parole de Jé-hovah fut adressée à Jérémie, le pro-phète.

9. Ainsi, parle Yahweh, Dieu d'Israël, vers qui vous m'avez envoyé pour lui porter votre prière: Si vous continuez à demeurer dans ce pays, je vous établirai et ne vous détruirai point, je vous planterai et ne vous arracherai point, car je me repens du mal que je vous ai fait.

9. and said to them: Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel, to whom you sent me to offer your prayer:

10. Ne craignez pas le roi de Babylone, dont vous avez peur; ne le craignez point, dit Yahweh, car Je suis avec vous pour vous sauver et vous délivrer de sa main.

10. If you remain quietly in this land I will build you up, and not tear you down; I will plant you, not uproot you; for I regret the evil I have done you.

11. Do not fear the king of Babylon, before whom you are now afraid; do not fear him, says the LORD, for I am with you to save you, to rescue you from his power.

12. Je vous ferai obtenir compassion, et il aura compas-sion de vous, et il vous fera retourner dans votre pays.

12. I will grant you mercy, so that he will be sorry for you and let you return to your land.

13. Que si vous dites: Nous ne demeurerons pas dans ce pays, de telle sorte que vous n'obéissiez pas à la voix de Yahweh;

13. But if you disobey the voice of the LORD, your God, and decide not to remain in this land,

14. si vous dites: Non! Mais nous irons au pays d'Egypte, où nous ne verrons point de guerre, où nous n'entendrons pas le son de la trom-pette, où nous ne sentirons pas la faim, et c'est là que nous habiterons, --

14. saying, "No, we will go to Egypt, where we will see no more of war, hear the trumpet alarm no longer, nor hunger for bread; there we will live";

15. alors écoutez la parole de Yahweh, vous, les restes de Juda: Ainsi parle Yahweh des armées, Dieu d'Israël: Si vous vous obstinez à vouloir aller en Egypte: et que vous y entriez pour y habiter,

15. then listen to the word of the LORD, remnant of Judah: Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: If you are determined to go to Egypt, when you arrive there to stay,

16. l'épée des Chaldéens que vous craignez vous atteindra là, au pays d'Egypte, et la famine que vous redou-tez s'attachera à vous là, en Egypte, et vous y mourrez.

16. the sword you fear shall reach you in the land of Egypt; the hunger you dread shall cling to you no less in Egypt, and there you shall die.

17. Tous ceux qui auront voulu entrer en Egypte pour y habiter mourront par l'épée, par la famine et la peste, et il n'y en aura aucun qui survive et qui échappe au mal que je ferai venir sur eux.

17. All those men who determine to go to Egypt to stay, shall die by the sword, famine, and pestilence; not one shall survive or escape the evil that I will bring upon them.

18. Car ainsi parle Yahweh des armées, Dieu d'Israël: Comme ma co-lère et ma fureur ont fondu sur les ha-bitants de Jérusalem, ainsi ma fureur fondra sur vous quand vous serez entrés en Egypte; vous serez un objet d'exé-cration, de stupéfaction, de malédiction et d'outrages, et vous ne reverrez plus ce lieu-ci. -

18. For thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: Just as my furious anger was poured out upon the citizens of Jerusalem, so shall my anger be poured out on you when you reach Egypt. You shall become an example of malediction and horror, a curse and a reproach, and you shall never see this place again.

19. Restes de Juda, Yahweh vous dit: N'entrez point en Egypte; sachez bien que je vous ai solennelle-ment avertis aujourd'hui.

19. It is the LORD who has spoken to you, remnant of Judah; do not go to Egypt! You can never say that I did not warn you this day.

20. Car vous vous abusiez vous-mêmes, lorsque vous m'avez envoyé vers Yahweh, notre Dieu, en di-sant: Intercède en notre faveur auprès de Yahweh, notre Dieu, et tout ce que Yahweh, notre Dieu, te dira, déclare-le nous, et nous le ferons.

20. At the cost of your lives you have deceived me, sending me to the LORD, your God, saying, "Pray for us to the LORD, our God; make known to us all that the LORD, our God, shall say, and we will do it."

21. Je vous l'ai déclaré aujourd'hui; mais vous n'avez point obéi à la voix de Yahweh, votre Dieu, ni à rien de ce qu'il vous a commandé.

21. Today I proclaim his message, but you obey the voice of the LORD, your God, in nothing that he has commissioned me to make known to you.

22. Sachez donc bien maintenant que vous mourrez par l'épée, par la famine et par la peste, au lieu où il vous a plu d'aller pour y habiter.

22. Have no doubt of this, you shall die by the sword, famine, and pestilence in the place where you wish to go and settle.
