Deutéronome, 5

1. Moïse convoqua tout Israël et leur dit:«Ecoute, Israël, les lois et les ordonnances que jevous fais entendre aujourd'hui; apprennez-les et mettez lessoigneusement en pratique.

1. Moses summoned all Israel and said to them, "Hear, O Israel, the statutes and decrees which I proclaim in your hearing this day, that you may learn them and take care to observe them.

2. Yahweh, notre Dieu, a conclu avec nous une alliance enHoreb.

2. The LORD, our God, made a covenant with us at Horeb;

3. Ce n'est point avec nos pères que Yahweh a conclu cettealliance, c'est avec nous, qui sommes ici aujourd'hui tousvivants.

3. not with our fathers did he make this covenant, but with us, all of us who are alive here this day.

4. Yahweh vous parla face à face sur la montagne, du milieudu feu,

4. The LORD spoke with you face to face on the mountain from the midst of the fire.

5. -- Je me tenais alors entre Yahweh et vous, pour rapporter saparole; car vous aviez peur du feu, et vous ne montâtespoint sur la montagne. -- Il dit:

5. Since you were afraid of the fire and would not go up the mountain, I stood between the LORD and you at that time, to announce to you these words of the LORD:

6. «Je suis Yahweh, ton Dieu, qui t'ai fait sortir du paysd'Egypte, de la maison de servitude.

6. 'I, the LORD, am your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, that place of slavery.

7. Tu n'auras point d'autres dieux devant ma face.

7. You shall not have other gods besides me.

8. Tu ne te feras point d'image taillée, ni aucune figurede ce qui est en haut dans le ciel, ou de ce qui est en bas surla terre, ou de ce qui est dans les eaux au-dessous de laterre.

8. You shall not carve idols for yourselves in the shape of anything in the sky above or on the earth below or in the waters beneath the earth;

9. Tu ne te prosterneras point devant eux et ne les serviraspoint; car moi, Yahweh, ton Dieu, je suis un Dieu jaloux,punissant l'iniquité des pères sur leur enfants,sur la troisième et sur la quatrièmegénération, pour ceux qui me haïssent,

9. you shall not bow down before them or worship them. For I, the LORD, your God, am a jealous God, inflicting punishments for their fathers' wickedness on the children of those who hate me, down to the third and fourth generation

10. et faisant miséricorde jusqu'à millegénérations, pour ceux qui m'aiment et qui gardentmes commandements.

10. but bestowing mercy, down to the thousandth generation, on the children of those who love me and keep my commandments.

11. Tu ne prendras point le nom de Yahweh, ton Dieu en vain; carYahweh ne laissera pas impuni celui qui prendra son nom envain.

11. 'You shall not take the name of the LORD, your God, in vain. For the LORD will not leave unpunished him who takes his name in vain.

12. Observe le jour du sabbat, pour le sanctifier, comme te l'aordonné Yahweh, ton Dieu.

12. 'Take care to keep holy the sabbath day as the LORD, your God, commanded you.

13. Pendant six jours tu travailleras et tu feras tout tonouvrage.

13. Six days you may labor and do all your work;

14. Mais le septième jour est un sabbat consacréà Yahweh, ton Dieu: tu ne feras aucun ouvrage, ni toi, niton fils, ni ta fille, ni ton serviteur, ni ta servante, ni tonboeuf, ni ton âne, ni aucune de tes bêtes, nil'étranger qui est dans tes portes, afin que ton serviteuret ta servante se reposent comme toi.

14. but the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD, your God. No work may be done then, whether by you, or your son or daughter, or your male or female slave, or your ox or ass or any of your beasts, or the alien who lives with you. Your male and female slave should rest as you do.

15. Tu te souviendras que tu as été esclave au paysd'Egypte, et que Yahweh, ton Dieu, t'en a fait sortir d'une mainforte et d'un bras étendu: c'est pourquoi Yahweh, tonDieu, t'a ordonné d'observer le jour du sabbat.

15. For remember that you too were once slaves in Egypt, and the LORD, your God, brought you from there with his strong hand and outstretched arm. That is why the LORD, your God, has commanded you to observe the sabbath day.

16. Honore ton père et ta mère, comme Yahweh, tonDieu te l'a ordonné, afin que tes jours soientprolongés et que tu sois heureux dans le pays que Yahweh,ton Dieu, te donne.

16. 'Honor your father and your mother, as the LORD, your God, has commanded you, that you may have a long life and prosperity in the land which the LORD, your God, is giving you.

17. Tu ne tueras point.

17. 'You shall not kill.

18. Tu ne commettras point d'adultère.

18. 'You shall not commit adultery.

19. Tu ne déroberas point.

19. 'You shall not steal.

20. Tu ne porteras point de faux témoignage contre tonprochain.

20. 'You shall not bear dishonest witness against your neighbor.

21. Tu ne convoiteras point la femme de ton prochain. Tu nedésireras point la maison de ton prochain, ni son champ,ni son serviteur, ni sa servante, ni son boeuf, ni son âne,ni rien de ce qui appartient à ton prochain.»

21. 'You shall not covet your neighbor's wife. 'You shall not desire your neighbor's house or field, nor his male or female slave, nor his ox or ass, nor anything that belongs to him.'

22. Telles sont les paroles que Yahweh adressa à toutevotre assemblée, sur la montagne, du milieu du feu, de lanuée et de l'obscurité, d'une voix forte; et iln'ajouta rien. Il les écrivit sur deux tables de pierre,qu'il me donna.

22. "These words, and nothing more, the LORD spoke with a loud voice to your entire assembly on the mountain from the midst of the fire and the dense cloud. He wrote them upon two tablets of stone and gave them to me.

23. Lorsque vous eûtes entendu la voix du milieu desténèbres, la montagne étant toute en feu,vous vous approchâtes de moi, tous vos chefs de tribus etvos anciens,

23. But when you heard the voice from the midst of the darkness, while the mountain was ablaze with fire, you came to me in the person of all your tribal heads and elders,

24. et vous dîtes: «Voici que Yahweh, notre Dieu, nousa montré sa gloire et sa grandeur, et nous avons entendusa voix du milieu du feu; aujourd'hui nous avons vu Dieu parlerà l'homme et l'homme rester vivant.

24. and said, 'The LORD, our God, has indeed let us see his glory and his majesty! We have heard his voice from the midst of the fire and have found out today that a man can still live after God has spoken with him.

25. Et maintenant pourquoi mourrions-nous? Car ce grand feu nousdévorera; si nous entendons encore la voix de Yahweh,notre Dieu, nous mourrons.

25. But why should we die now? Surely this great fire will consume us. If we hear the voice of the LORD, our God, any more, we shall die.

26. Car parmi toute chair, quel est celui qui a entendu, commenous, la voix du Dieu vivant parlant du milieu du feu, et quisoit demeuré en vie?

26. For what mortal has heard, as we have, the voice of the living God speaking from the midst of fire, and survived?

27. Toi, approche-toi, et écoute tout ce que dira Yahweh,notre Dieu: nous l'écouterons et nous leferons.»

27. Go closer, you, and hear all that the LORD, our God, will say, and then tell us what the LORD, our God, tells you; we will listen and obey.'

28. Yahweh entendit vos paroles tandis que vous me parliez, etYahweh me dit: «J'ai entendu les paroles que ce peuple t'aadressées: tout ce qu'ils ont dit est bien.

28. "The LORD heard your words as you were speaking to me and said to me, 'I have heard the words these people have spoken to you, which are all well said.

29. Oh! S'ils avaient toujours ce même coeur pour mecraindre et pour observer mes commandements, afin qu'ils soientheureux à jamais, eux et leurs enfants!

29. Would that they might always be of such a mind, to fear me and to keep all my commandments! Then they and their descendants would prosper forever.

30. Va, dis-leur: Retournez dans vos tentes.

30. Go, tell them to return to their tents.

31. Mais toi, reste ici avec moi, et je te dirai tous lescommandements, les lois et les ordonnances que tu leurenseigneras, pour qu'ils les mettent en pratique dans le pays queje leur donne en possession.

31. Then you wait here near me and I will give you all the commandments, the statutes and decrees you must teach them, that they may observe them in the land which I am giving them to possess.'

32. Vous aurez soin de faire ce que Yahweh, votre Dieu, vous acommandé; vous ne vous en détournerez ni àdroite ni à gauche,

32. "Be careful, therefore, to do as the LORD, your God, has commanded you, not turning aside to the right or to the left,

33. mais vous suivrez en tout la voie que Yahweh, votre Dieu, vousa prescrite, afin que vous viviez et que vous soyez heureux, etque vous prolongiez vos jours dans le pays que vousposséderez.»

33. but following exactly the way prescribed for you by the LORD, your God, that you may live and prosper, and may have long life in the land which you are to occupy.
