Ezekiel, 17

1. The word of Yahweh was addressed to me as follows,

1. Das Wort des Herrn erging an mich:

2. 'Son of man, put a riddle, propound a parable to the House of Israel.

2. Menschensohn, trag dem Haus Israel ein Rätsel vor, erzähl ihm ein Gleichnis!

3. Say, "The Lord Yahweh says this: A great eagle with great wings, long-pinioned, rich with many-coloured plumage, came to the Lebanon.

3. Sag: So spricht Gott, der Herr: Ein mächtiger Adler mit gewaltigen Flügeln, / mit weiten Schwingen, mit dichtem, buntem Gefieder kam zum Libanon / und nahm den Wipfel der Zeder weg.

4. He took the top of the cedar tree, he plucked off the top branch, he carried it off to the country of merchants and set it down in a city of shopkeepers.

4. Den obersten Zweig riss er ab./ Ins Land der Krämer brachte er ihn, / in die Stadt der Händler legte er ihn.

5. Next, he took one of the country's seeds and put it in a fertile field; by the side of a generous stream, like a willow tree, he placed it.

5. Dann nahm er vom Samen des Landes / und streute ihn auf ein Saatfeld. Er setzte ihn an reichlich strömendes Wasser, / als Uferpflanze pflanzte er ihn

6. It grew and became a fruitful vine of modest size, grew up towards the eagle, its roots grew downwards. So it became a vine, branching out and sprouting new shoots.

6. und er wuchs heran / und wurde zum üppigen Weinstock / von niedrigem Wuchs. Er sollte seine Ranken dem Adler zuwenden, / seine Wurzeln sollten in die Tiefe wachsen.Und er wurde zum Weinstock, / bildete Triebe, entfaltete Zweige.

7. But there was another great eagle with great wings and thick plumage. And now the vine twisted its roots towards him and stretched its branches towards him, for him to water it away from the bed where it was planted.

7. Doch es kam noch ein anderer mächtiger Adler / mit gewaltigen Flügeln und dichtem Gefieder. Da drehte jener Weinstock seine Wurzeln ihm zu, / trieb ihm seine Ranken entgegen: Der Adler sollte ihn tränken, / mehr als das Beet, in das der Weinstock gepflanzt war.

8. It was in a fertile field, by the side of a wide stream that the vine had been planted, to branch out and bear fruit and become a noble vine."

8. Er war doch auf guten Boden gepflanzt, / an reichlich fließendem Wasser, um Zweige zu treiben und Früchte zu tragen / und ein herrlicher Weinstock zu werden.

9. Say, "The Lord Yahweh says this: Will it succeed? Will the eagle not tear out its roots and strip off its fruit, so that all the new leaves it puts out will wither, and no great strength is needed nor many people to pull it up by the roots?

9. Sag: So spricht Gott, der Herr: / Wird das gelingen? Wird der Adler nicht seine Wurzeln ausreißen / und seine Früchte vernichten, / sodass all seine grünenden Triebe verdorren? Man braucht keinen starken Arm und nicht viele Menschen, / um ihn von den Wurzeln zu reißen.

10. Planted it may be -- will it succeed? Will it not shrivel up when the east wind blows? It will wither in the bed where it was growing!" '

10. Wohl ist er gepflanzt, / doch wird er gedeihen? Wird er nicht völlig verdorren, / wenn der Ostwind ihn trifft? / Auf dem Beet, wo er wuchs, wird er verdorren.

11. The word of Yahweh was addressed to me as follows:

11. Und das Wort des Herrn erging an mich:

12. 'Say to that tribe of rebels, "Do you not know what this means?" Say this, 'Look, the king of Babylon came to Jerusalem; he carried away the king and the princes, and took them to his home in Babylon.

12. Sag doch dem widerspenstigen Volk: / Merkt ihr denn nicht, was all das bedeutet? Sag ihnen: / Seht, nach Jerusalem kam der König von Babel; er nahm ihren König und ihre Beamten gefangen / und führte sie mit sich nach Babel.

13. He took a member of the royal family and made a treaty with him, forcing him to swear loyalty, having already deported the leading men of the country,

13. Und er nahm einen Mann aus königlichem Stamm / und schloss mit ihm einen Bundund er ließ ihn schwören. / Doch die Mächtigen des Landes nahm er gefangen,

14. so that the kingdom would remain modest and without ambitions, and would keep and honour his treaty.

14. damit das Königreich klein blieb / und keinen Aufstand begann, damit es den Bund auch hielt, / sodass er Bestand haben konnte.

15. But the prince rebelled against him and sent envoys to Egypt to procure himself horses and a large number of troops. Will he succeed? Will a man who has done this go unpunished? Can he break a treaty and go unpunished?

15. Doch jener erhob sich gegen den König von Babel / und schickte seine Boten ins Land der Ägypter, / damit man ihm Pferde und viele Krieger entsandte. Aber wird es gelingen? / Kommt er davon, wenn er das unternimmt? / Wenn er den Bund bricht, kommt er dann noch davon?

16. As I live, I swear it -- declares the Lord Yahweh -- in Babylon, in the country of the king who put him on the throne, whose oath he has disregarded and whose treaty he has broken, there he will die.

16. So wahr ich lebe - Spruch Gottes, des Herrn: In der Residenz des Königs, der ihn zum König gemacht hat, dessen Eid er missachtet und dessen Bund er gebrochen hat, in Babel wird er sterben.

17. Despite the pharaoh's great army and hordes of men, he will not be able to save him by fighting, however many earthworks are raised, however many trenches dug to the loss of many lives.

17. Denn der Pharao wird ihn nicht mit einer starken Streitmacht und mit einem großen Heer im Kampf unterstützen, sondern man wird einen Damm aufschütten, einen Belagerungswall bauen und viele Menschen umbringen.

18. He has disregarded the oath by breaking the treaty to which he had pledged himself and, having done all this, will not go unpunished.

18. Er hat den Eid missachtet und den Bund gebrochen. Obwohl er sich mit Handschlag verpflichtet hatte, hat er all das getan. Er kommt nicht davon.

19. "So, the Lord Yahweh says this: As I live, I swear it: my oath which he has disregarded, my treaty which he has broken, I shall make them both recoil on his own head.

19. Darum - so spricht Gott, der Herr: So wahr ich lebe - / meinen Eid, den er missachtet, und meinen Bund, den er gebrochen hat, / ich lasse sie auf ihn selbst zurückfallen.

20. I shall throw my net over him, he will be caught in my mesh; I shall take him to Babylon and punish him there for being unfaithful to me.

20. Ich werfe mein Netz über ihn, er gerät in mein Garn. / Nach Babel führe ich ihn und gehe dort mit ihm ins Gericht, / denn er hat mir die Treue gebrochen.

21. All the pick of all his troops will fall by the sword, and the survivors be scattered to all the winds. And you will know that I, Yahweh, have spoken.

21. Die tapfersten Krieger in all seinen Truppen / fallen unter dem Schwert. Die Übriggebliebenen aber / werden in alle Winde zerstreut. Dann werdet ihr erkennen, / dass ich, der Herr, gesprochen habe.

22. "The Lord Yahweh says this: From the top of the tall cedar tree, from the highest branch I shall take a shoot and plant it myself on a high and lofty mountain.

22. So spricht Gott, der Herr: Ich selbst nehme ein Stück / vom hohen Wipfel der Zeder / und pflanze es ein. Einen zarten Zweig aus den obersten Ästen breche ich ab, / ich pflanze ihn auf einen hoch aufragenden Berg.

23. I shall plant it on the highest mountain in Israel. It will put out branches and bear fruit and grow into a noble cedar tree. Every kind of bird will live beneath it, every kind of winged creature will rest in the shade of its branches.

23. Auf die Höhe von Israels Bergland pflanze ich ihn. / Dort treibt er dann Zweige, / er trägt Früchte und wird zur prächtigen Zeder. Allerlei Vögel wohnen darin; / alles, was Flügel hat, wohnt im Schatten ihrer Zweige.

24. And all the trees of the countryside will know that I, Yahweh, am the one who lays the tall tree low and raises the low tree high, who makes the green tree wither and makes the withered bear fruit. I, Yahweh, have spoken, and I will do it." '

24. Dann werden alle Bäume auf den Feldern erkennen, / dass ich der Herr bin. Ich mache den hohen Baum niedrig, / den niedrigen mache ich hoch. Ich lasse den grünenden Baum verdorren, / den verdorrten erblühen. / Ich, der Herr, habe gesprochen und ich führe es aus.
