Liber Ecclesiasticus, 37

1. Omnis amicus dicet: “Et ego amicitiam copulavi!”; sed est amicus solo nomine amicus. Nonne tristitia appropinquans usque ad mortem:

1. Have mercy upon us, O Lord, the God of all, and look upon us,

2. sodalis et amicus ad inimicitiam conversus?

2. and cause the fear of thee to fall upon all the nations.

3. O praesumptio nequissima, unde creata es cooperire aridam malitia et dolositate illius?

3. Lift up thy hand against foreign nations and let them see thy might.

4. Sodalis amico coniucundatur in oblectationibus et in tempore tribulationis adversarius erit;

4. As in us thou hast been sanctified before them, so in them be thou magnified before us;

5. sodalis amico condolet causa ventris et contra hostem accipiet scutum.

5. and let them know thee, as we have known that there is not God but thee, O Lord.

6. Non obliviscaris amici tui in animo tuo et non immemor sis illius in opibus tuis.

6. Show signs anew, and work further wonders; make thy hand and thy right arm glorious.

7. Noli consiliari cum eo, qui tibi insidiatur, et a zelantibus te absconde consilium.

7. Rouse thy anger and pour out thy wrath; destroy the adversary and wipe out the enemy.

8. Omnis consiliarius prodit consilium, sed est consiliarius pro semetipso.

8. Hasten the day, and remember the appointed time, and let people recount thy mighty deeds.

9. A consiliario serva animam tuam et prius scito quae sit illius necessitas ­ et ipse enim animo suo cogitabit ­

9. Let him who survives be consumed in the fiery wrath, and may those who harm thy people meet destruction.

10. ne forte mittat super te sortem et dicat tibi:

10. Crush the heads of the rulers of the enemy, who say, "There is no one but ourselves."

11. “Bona est via tua” et stet e contrario videre quid tibi eveniat.

11. Gather all the tribes of Jacob, and give them their inheritance, as at the beginning.

12. Noli consiliari cum invido et a zelante te consilium absconde; nec cum muliere de ea, quae ei aemulatur, cum timido de bello, cum negotiatore de traiecticio, cum emptore de venditione, cum viro livido de gratiis agendis,

12. Have mercy, O Lord, upon the people called by thy name, upon Israel, whom thou hast likened to a first-born son.

13. cum impio de pietate, cum inhonesto de honestate, cum operario otioso de omni opere,

13. Have pity on the city of thy sanctuary, Jerusalem, the place of thy rest.

14. cum mercennario annuali de consummatione anni, cum servo pigro de multa operatione: non attendas his in omni consilio.

14. Fill Zion with the celebration of thy wondrous deeds, and thy temple with thy glory.

15. Sed cum viro timorato assiduus esto, quemcumque cognoveris observantem mandata,

15. Bear witness to those whom thou didst create in the beginning, and fulfil the prophecies spoken in thy name.

16. cuius anima est secundum animam tuam, et qui, cum titubaveris in tenebris, condolebit tibi.

16. Reward those who wait for thee, and let thy prophets be found trustworthy.

17. Et consilium cordis statue tecum; non est enim tibi aliud fidelius illo.

17. Hearken, O Lord, to the prayer of thy servants, according to the blessing of Aaron for thy people, and all who are on the earth will know that thou art the Lord, the God of the ages.

18. Anima viri enuntiat aliquando vera quam septem circumspectores sedentes in excelso ad speculandum.

18. The stomach will take any food, yet one food is better than another.

19. Et in his omnibus deprecare Altissimum, ut dirigat in veritate viam tuam.

19. As the palate tastes the kinds of game, so an intelligent mind detects false words.

20. Ante omnia opera verbum verax praecedat te, et ante omnem actum consilium stabile.

20. A perverse mind will cause grief, but a man of experience will pay him back.

21. Radix consiliorum cor, ex quo partes quattuor oriuntur: bonum et malum, vita et mors; et dominatrix illorum est assidua lingua.

21. A woman will accept any man, but one daughter is better than another.

22. Est vir peritus multorum eruditor et animae suae inutilis est.

22. A woman's beauty gladdens the countenance, and surpasses every human desire.

23. Est qui sophistice loquitur et odibilis est; in omni cibo voluptatis defraudabitur.

23. If kindness and humility mark her speech, her husband is not like other men.

24. Non est illi data a Domino gratia: omni enim sapientia defraudatus est.

24. He who acquires a wife gets his best possession, a helper fit for him and a pillar of support.

25. Est sapiens animae suae sapiens, et fructus sensus illius super corpus suum.

25. Where there is no fence, the property will be plundered; and where there is no wife, a man will wander about and sigh.

26. Vir sapiens plebem suam erudit, et fructus sensus illius fideles sunt.

26. For who will trust a nimble robber that skips from city to city? So who will trust a man that has no home, and lodges wherever night finds him?

27. Vir sapiens implebitur benedictionibus, et omnes videntes illum beatum dicent.

28. Vita viri in numero dierum; dies autem Israel innumerabiles sunt.

29. Sapiens in populo hereditabit honorem, et nomen illius erit vivens in aeternum.

30. Fili, in vita tua tenta animam tuam et vide si quid obnoxium ei est: non des illi.

31. Non enim omnia omnibus expediunt, et non omni animae omne genus placet.

32. Noli avidus esse in omni epulatione et non te effundas super omnem escam.

33. In multis enim escis erit infirmitas, et aviditas appropinquabit usque ad choleram.

34. Propter crapulam multi obierunt; qui autem abstinens est, adiciet vitam.
