Josué, 2

1. Josué, fils de Nun, fit partir en secret de Sétimdeux espions, en leur disant: «Allez, examinez le pays, etJéricho.» S'étant mis en route, ilsarrivèrent dans la maison d'une courtisane, nomméeRahab, et ils y couchèrent.

1. Then Joshua, son of Nun, secretly sent out two spies from Shittim, saying, "Go, reconnoiter the land and Jericho." When the two reached Jericho, they went into the house of a harlot named Rahab, where they lodged.

2. On le dit au roi de Jéricho, en ces termes: «Voicique des hommes d'entre les enfants d'Israël sont venus icipendant la nuit, pour explorer le pays.»

2. But a report was brought to the king of Jericho that some Israelites had come there that night to spy out the land.

3. Le roi de Jéricho envoya dire à Rahab:«Fais sortir les hommes qui sont venus chez toi et sontentrés dans ta maison, car c'est pour explorer tout lepays qu'ils sont venus.»

3. So the king of Jericho sent Rahab the order, "Put out the visitors who have entered your house, for they have come to spy out the entire land."

4. La femme prit les deux hommes et, les ayant cachés, elledit: «Il est vrai que ces hommes sont venus chez moi, maisje n'ai pas su d'où ils étaient;

4. The woman had taken the two men and hidden them, so she said, "True, the men you speak of came to me, but I did not know where they came from.

5. et comme on allait fermer le soir la porte de la ville, ilssont sortis; j'ignore où ils sont allés:hâtez-vous de les poursuivre, car vous lesatteindrez.»

5. At dark, when it was time for the gate to be shut, they left, and I do not know where they went. You will have to pursue them immediately to overtake them."

6. Or elle les avait fait monter sur le toit et les avaitcachés sous des tiges de lin, qu'elle avaitdisposées sur le toit.

6. Now, she had led them to the roof, and hidden them among her stalks of flax spread out there.

7. Ces gens les poursuivirent par le chemin des gués duJourdain, et, dès que furent sortis ceux qui lespoursuivaient, on ferma la porte.

7. But the pursuers set out along the way to the fords of the Jordan, and once they had left, the gate was shut.

8. Avant que les espions se couchassent, Rahab monta vers eux surle toit,

8. Before the spies fell asleep, Rahab came to them on the roof

9. et leur dit: «Yahweh, je le sais, vous a donné cepays; la terreur de votre nom nous a saisis, et tous leshabitants du pays défaillent devant vous.

9. and said: "I know that the LORD has given you the land, that a dread of you has come upon us, and that all the inhabitants of the land are overcome with fear of you.

10. Car nous avons appris comment Yahweh, lorsque vous sortiezd'Egypte, a mis à sec devant vous les eaux de la merRouge, et comment vous avez traité les deux rois desAmorrhéens, au delà du Jourdain, Séhon etOg, que vous avez dévoués par anathème.

10. For we have heard how the LORD dried up the waters of the Red Sea before you when you came out of Egypt, and how you dealt with Sihon and Og, the two kings of the Amorites beyond the Jordan, whom you doomed to destruction.

11. Et, en l'apprenant, notre coeur s'est fondu, chacun a perducourage à votre approche; car c'est Yahweh, votre Dieu,qui est Dieu en haut dans le ciel, et en bas sur la terre.

11. At these reports, we are disheartened; everyone is discouraged because of you, since the LORD, your God, is God in heaven above and on earth below.

12. Maintenant, je vous prie, jurez-moi par Yahweh que vous aurezpour la maison de mon père la même bonté quej'ai eue pour vous,

12. Now then, swear to me by the LORD that, since I am showing kindness to you, you in turn will show kindness to my family; and give me an unmistakable token

13. et donnez-moi un gage assuré que vous laisserez la vieà mon père, à ma mère, à mesfrères, à mes soeurs, et à tous ceux quileur appartiennent, et que vous nous sauverez de lamort.»

13. that you are to spare my father and mother, brothers and sisters, and all their kin, and save us from death."

14. Ces hommes lui répondirent: «Que nous mourrionspour vous, si vous ne divulguez pas notre affaire! Et quandYahweh nous donnera ce pays, nous agirons envers toi avecbonté et fidélité.»

14. "We pledge our lives for yours," the men answered her. "If you do not betray this errand of ours, we will be faithful in showing kindness to you when the LORD gives us the land."

15. Elle les fit descendre avec une corde par la fenêtre,car sa maison était attenante à la muraille de laville,et elle habitait sur la muraille.

15. Then she let them down through the window with a rope; for she lived in a house built into the city wall.

16. Elle leur dit: «Allez à la montagne, de peur queceux qui vous poursuivent ne vous rencontrent, et cachez-vouslà pendant trois jour,jusqu'à ce qu'ils soient deretour; après quoi, vous suivrez votre chemin.»

16. "Go up into the hill country," she suggested to them, "that your pursuers may not find you. Hide there for three days, until they return; then you may proceed on your way."

17. Ces hommes lui dirent: «Voici comment nous nousacquitterons de ce serment que tu nous as fait faire:

17. The men answered her, "This is how we will fulfill the oath you made us take:

18. A notre entrée dans le pays, attache ce cordon de filécarlate à la fenêtre par laquelle tu nousfais descendre, et rassemble auprès de toi, dans tamaison, ton père, ta mère, tes frères, ettoute la famille de ton père.

18. When we come into the land, tie this scarlet cord in the window through which you are letting us down; and gather your father and mother, your brothers and all your family into your house.

19. Si quelqu'un d'eux sort de la porte de ta maison pour allerdehors, son sang sera sur sa tête, et nous en serontinnocents; mais si l'on met la main sur l'un de tous ceux quiseront avec toi dans la maison, son sang sera sur notretête.

19. Should any of them pass outside the doors of your house, he will be responsible for his own death, and we shall be guiltless. But we shall be responsible if anyone in the house with you is harmed.

20. Et si tu divulgues notre affaire, nous serons quittes duserment que tu nous as fait prêter.»

20. If, however, you betray this errand of ours, we shall be quit of the oath you have made us take."

21. Elle répondit: «Qu'il en soit selon vosparoles.» Puis elle les congédia, et ils partirent:et elle attacha à la fenêtre le cordonécarlate.

21. "Let it be as you say," she replied, and bade them farewell. When they were gone, she tied the scarlet cord in the window.

22. Les espions, s'en étant allés, vinrent àla montagne, et ils y restèrent trois jours,jusqu'à ce que ceux qui les poursuivaient fussent deretour à Jéricho. Ceux qui les poursuivaient lesavaient cherchés sur tout le chemin, sans lesrencontrer.

22. They went up into the hills, where they stayed three days until their pursuers, who had sought them all along the road without finding them, returned.

23. Les deux hommes s'en retournèrent et, étantdescendus de la montagne, ils passèrent le Jourdain. Ilsvinrent auprès de Josué, fils de Nun, et luiracontèrent tout ce qui leur étaitarrivé.

23. Then the two came back down from the hills, crossed the Jordan to Joshua, son of Nun, and reported all that had befallen them.

24. Ils dirent à Josué: «Certainement Yahweh alivré tout le pays entre nos mains, et même tous leshabitants du pays défaillent devant nous.»

24. They assured Joshua, "The LORD has delivered all this land into our power; indeed, all the inhabitants of the land are overcome with fear of us."
