Actes des Apôtres, 22
1. " Frères et pères, écoutez ce que j'ai maintenant à vous dire pour ma défense. "
1. "My brothers and fathers, listen to what I am about to say to you in my defense."
2. Entendant qu'il leur adressait la parole en langue hébraïque, ils firent encore plus silence. Et il dit :
2. When they heard him addressing them in Hebrew they became all the more quiet. And he continued,
3. " Je suis Juif, né à Tarse de Cilicie; mais j'ai été élevé dans cette ville-ci et instruit aux pieds de Gamaliel exactement selon la Loi de nos pères, zélateur de Dieu comme vous l'êtes tous aujourd'hui.
3. "I am a Jew, born in Tarsus in Cilicia, but brought up in this city. At the feet of Gamaliel I was educated strictly in our ancestral law and was zealous for God, just as all of you are today.
4. J'ai persécuté cette secte jusqu'à la mort, chargeant de chaînes et jetant en prison hommes et femmes,
4. I persecuted this Way to death, binding both men and women and delivering them to prison.
5. comme le grand prêtre même m'en rend témoignage, ainsi que tout le collège des Anciens. Ayant même reçu d'eux des lettres pour les frères, je m'en allais à Damas pour amener aussi enchaînés à Jérusalem ceux qui se trouvaient là, afin qu'il fussent punis.
5. Even the high priest and the whole council of elders can testify on my behalf. For from them I even received letters to the brothers and set out for Damascus to bring back to Jerusalem in chains for punishment those there as well.
6. Or, il m'arriva, comme j'étais en chemin et que j'approchais de Damas, que tout à coup, vers midi, une vive lumière venant du ciel resplendit autour de moi.
6. "On that journey as I drew near to Damascus, about noon a great light from the sky suddenly shone around me.
7. Je tombai sur le sol et j'entendis une voix qui me disait : " Saul, Saul, pourquoi me persécutes-tu? "
7. I fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to me, 'Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?'
8. Je répondis : " Qui êtes-vous, Seigneur? " Et il me dit : " Je suis Jésus de Nazareth, que tu persécutes. "
8. I replied, 'Who are you, sir?' And he said to me, 'I am Jesus the Nazorean whom you are persecuting.'
9. Ceux qui étaient avec moi virent bien la lumière, mais ils n'entendirent pas la voix de celui qui me parlait.
9. My companions saw the light but did not hear the voice of the one who spoke to me.
10. Alors je dis : " Qu'ai-je à faire, Seigneur? " Et le Seigneur me dit : " Lève-toi, va à Damas, et là on te dira tout ce qu'il t'est prescrit de faire. "
10. I asked, 'What shall I do, sir?' The Lord answered me, 'Get up and go into Damascus, and there you will be told about everything appointed for you to do.'
11. Et comme par suite de l'éclat de cette lumière je ne voyais plus, ceux qui étaient avec moi me conduisirent par la main, et j'arrivai à Damas.
11. Since I could see nothing because of the brightness of that light, I was led by hand by my companions and entered Damascus.
12. Or un certain Ananie, homme pieux selon la Loi, à qui tous les Juifs habitant (Damas) rendaient bon témoignage,
12. "A certain Ananias, a devout observer of the law, and highly spoken of by all the Jews who lived there,
13. vint à moi et, se tenant près de moi, me dit : " Saul, mon frère, recouvre la vue. " Et au même instant je le regardai.
13. came to me and stood there and said, 'Saul, my brother, regain your sight.' And at that very moment I regained my sight and saw him.
14. Et il dit : " Le Dieu de nos pères t'as prédestiné à connaître sa volonté, à voir le Juste et entendre les paroles de sa bouche,
14. Then he said, 'The God of our ancestors designated you to know his will, to see the Righteous One, and to hear the sound of his voice;
15. parce que pour lui tu seras témoin, auprès de tous les hommes, des choses que tu as vues et entendues.
15. for you will be his witness before all to what you have seen and heard.
16. Et maintenant pourquoi tarder? Lève-toi, fais-toi baptiser et purifie-toi de tes péchés en invoquant son nom. "
16. Now, why delay? Get up and have yourself baptized and your sins washed away, calling upon his name.'
17. De retour à Jérusalem, comme je priais dans le temple, il m'arriva d'être en extase,
17. "After I had returned to Jerusalem and while I was praying in the temple, I fell into a trance
18. et je vis (le Seigneur) qui me disait : " Hâte-toi et sors au plus tôt de Jérusalem, parce qu'on n'y recevra pas ton témoignage sur moi. "
18. and saw the Lord saying to me, 'Hurry, leave Jerusalem at once, because they will not accept your testimony about me.'
19. Et je dis : " Seigneur, ils savent eux-mêmes que je faisais mettre en prison et battre de verges dans les synagogues ceux qui croyaient en vous;
19. But I replied, 'Lord, they themselves know that from synagogue to synagogue I used to imprison and beat those who believed in you.
20. et lorsqu'on répandit le sang d'Etienne, votre témoin, j'étais moi-même présent, approuvant et gardant les vêtements de ceux qui le tuaient. "
20. And when the blood of your witness Stephen was being shed, I myself stood by giving my approval and keeping guard over the cloaks of his murderers.'
21. Et il me dit : " Va, parce que c'est aux nations lointaines que je vais t'envoyer. "
21. Then he said to me, 'Go, I shall send you far away to the Gentiles.'"
22. (Les Juifs) l'avaient écouté jusqu'à ces mots; mais ils élevèrent la voix, disant : " Ote de la terre un pareil (homme), car il n'est pas digne de vivre. "
22. They listened to him until he said this, but then they raised their voices and shouted, "Take such a one as this away from the earth. It is not right that he should live."
23. Et comme ils poussaient de grands cris, jetaient leurs manteaux et lançaient de la poussière en l'air,
23. And as they were yelling and throwing off their cloaks and flinging dust into the air,
24. le tribun ordonna de le faire entrer dans la forteresse et dit de lui donner la question par le fouet, afin de savoir pour quel motif ils criaient ainsi contre lui.
24. the cohort commander ordered him to be brought into the compound and gave instruction that he be interrogated under the lash to determine the reason why they were making such an outcry against him.
25. Mais comme on l'étendait pour la flagellation, Paul dit au centurion qui était là : " Vous est-il permis d'appliquer le fouet à un citoyen romain, qui n'est pas même condamné? "
25. But when they had stretched him out for the whips, Paul said to the centurion on duty, "Is it lawful for you to scourge a man who is a Roman citizen and has not been tried?"
26. Ayant entendu cela, le centurion alla le rapporter au tribun, disant : " Que vas-tu faire? Car cet homme est Romain. "
26. When the centurion heard this, he went to the cohort commander and reported it, saying, "What are you going to do? This man is a Roman citizen."
27. Le tribun vin et dit à Paul : " Dis-moi, es-tu Romain? " Et il dit : " Oui. "
27. Then the commander came and said to him, "Tell me, are you a Roman citizen?" "Yes," he answered.
28. Et le tribun repris : " Moi, j'ai acheté bien cher ce droit de cité. " Et Paul dit : " Mais moi, je l'ai de naissance. "
28. The commander replied, "I acquired this citizenship for a large sum of money." Paul said, "But I was born one."
29. Aussitôt donc ceux qui allaient lui donner la question se retirèrent d'auprès de lui, et le tribun aussi eut peur, quand il sut qu'il était Romain, parce qu'il l'avait fait lier.
29. At once those who were going to interrogate him backed away from him, and the commander became alarmed when he realized that he was a Roman citizen and that he had had him bound.
30. Le lendemain, voulant savoir exactement de quoi les Juifs l'accusaient (le tribun) lui fit ôter ses liens, et il donna l'ordre aux grands prêtres et à tout le Sanhédrin de se réunir; puis, ayant fait descendre Paul, il le plaça au milieu d'eux.
30. The next day, wishing to determine the truth about why he was being accused by the Jews, he freed him and ordered the chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin to convene. Then he brought Paul down and made him stand before them.
