1. When Jesus had spoken these words, he went forth with his disciples over the brook Cedron, where was a garden, into the which he entered, and his disciples.

1. When Jesus had finished speaking, he went with his disciples to the other side of the Kidron Valley. There was a garden there where Jesus entered with his disciples.

2. And Judas also, which betrayed him, knew the place: for Jesus ofttimes resorted thither with his disciples.

2. Now Judas, who betrayed him, knew the place since Jesus had often met there with his disciples.

3. Judas then, having received a band [of men] and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, cometh thither with lanterns and torches and weapons.

3. He led soldiers of the Roman battalion and guards from the chief priests and Pharisees, who went there with lanterns, torches and weapons.

4. Jesus therefore, knowing all things that should come upon him, went forth, and said unto them, Whom seek ye?

4. Jesus knew all that was going to happen to him; he stepped forward and asked, "Who are you looking for?"

5. They answered him, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus saith unto them, I am [he]. And Judas also, which betrayed him, stood with them.

5. They answered, "Jesus the Nazarene." Jesus said, "I am he." Judas, who betrayed him, stood there with them.

6. As soon then as he had said unto them, I am [he], they went backward, and fell to the ground.

6. When Jesus said, "I am he," they moved back and fell to the ground.

7. Then asked he them again, Whom seek ye? And they said, Jesus of Nazareth.

7. He then asked a second time, "Who are you looking for?" and they answered, "Jesus the Nazarene."

8. Jesus answered, I have told you that I am [he]: if therefore ye seek me, let these go their way:

8. Jesus replied, "I told you that I am he. If you are looking for me, let these others go."

9. That the saying might be fulfilled, which he spake, Of them which thou gavest me have I lost none.

9. So what Jesus had said came true: "I have not lost one of those you gave me."

10. Then Simon Peter having a sword drew it, and smote the high priest's servant, and cut off his right ear. The servant's name was Malchus.

10. Simon Peter had a sword; he drew it and struck Malchus, the High Priest's servant, cutting off his right ear.

11. Then said Jesus unto Peter, Put up thy sword into the sheath: the cup which my Father hath given me, shall I not drink it?

11. But Jesus said to Peter, "Put your sword into its sheath; shall I not drink the cup which the Father has given me?"

12. Then the band and the captain and officers of the Jews took Jesus, and bound him,

12. The guards and the soldiers, with their commander, seized Jesus and bound him;

13. And led him away to Annas first; for he was father in law to Caiaphas, which was the high priest that same year.

13. and they took him first to Annas. Annas was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was the High Priest that year;

14. Now Caiaphas was he, which gave counsel to the Jews, that it was expedient that one man should die for the people.

14. and it was Caiaphas who had told the Jews: "It is better that one man should die for the people."

15. And Simon Peter followed Jesus, and [so did] another disciple: that disciple was known unto the high priest, and went in with Jesus into the palace of the high priest.

15. Simon Peter with another disciple followed Jesus. Because this disciple was known to the High Priest, they let him enter the courtyard of the High Priest along with Jesus,

16. But Peter stood at the door without. Then went out that other disciple, which was known unto the high priest, and spake unto her that kept the door, and brought in Peter.

16. but Peter had to stay outside at the door. The other disciple, who was known to the High Priest went out and spoke to the maidservant at the gate and brought Peter in.

17. Then saith the damsel that kept the door unto Peter, Art not thou also [one] of this man's disciples? He saith, I am not.

17. Then, this servant on duty at the door said to Peter, "So you also are one of his disciples?" But he answered, "I am not."

18. And the servants and officers stood there, who had made a fire of coals; for it was cold: and they warmed themselves: and Peter stood with them, and warmed himself.

18. Now the servants and the guards had made a charcoal fire and were standing and warming themselves, because it was cold. Peter was also with them warming himself.

19. The high priest then asked Jesus of his disciples, and of his doctrine.

19. The High Priest questioned Jesus about his disciples and his teaching.

20. Jesus answered him, I spake openly to the world; I ever taught in the synagogue, and in the temple, whither the Jews always resort; and in secret have I said nothing.

20. Jesus answered him, "I have spoken openly to the world; I have always taught in places where the Jews meet together, either at the assemblies in synagogues or in the Temple. I did not teach secretly.

21. Why askest thou me? ask them which heard me, what I have said unto them: behold, they know what I said.

21. Why then do you ask me? Ask those who heard me, they know what I said."

22. And when he had thus spoken, one of the officers which stood by struck Jesus with the palm of his hand, saying, Answerest thou the high priest so?

22. At this reply one of the guards standing by gave Jesus a blow on the face, saying, "Is that the way to answer the High Priest?"

23. Jesus answered him, If I have spoken evil, bear witness of the evil: but if well, why smitest thou me?

23. Jesus said to him, "If I have spoken wrongly, point it out; but if I have spoken rightly, why do you strike me?"

24. Now Annas had sent him bound unto Caiaphas the high priest.

24. Then Annas sent him, bound, to Caiaphas, the High Priest.

25. And Simon Peter stood and warmed himself. They said therefore unto him, Art not thou also [one] of his disciples? He denied [it], and said, I am not.

25. Now Simon Peter stood there warming himself. They said to him, "Surely you also are one of his disciples." He denied it and answered, "I am not."

26. One of the servants of the high priest, being [his] kinsman whose ear Peter cut off, saith, Did not I see thee in the garden with him?

26. One of the High Priest's servants, a kinsman of the one whose ear Peter had cut off, asked, "Did I not see you with him in the garden?"

27. Peter then denied again: and immediately the cock crew.

27. Again Peter denied it, and at once the cock crowed.

28. Then led they Jesus from Caiaphas unto the hall of judgment: and it was early; and they themselves went not into the judgment hall, lest they should be defiled; but that they might eat the passover.

28. Then they led Jesus from the house of Caiaphas to the court of the Roman governor. It was now morning. The Jews didn't enter lest they be made unclean (by coming into the house of a pagan) and be unable to eat the Passover meal.

29. Pilate then went out unto them, and said, What accusation bring ye against this man?

29. So Pilate went out and asked, "What charge do you bring against this man?" They answered,

30. They answered and said unto him, If he were not a malefactor, we would not have delivered him up unto thee.

30. "If he were not a criminal, we would not be handing him over to you."

31. Then said Pilate unto them, Take ye him, and judge him according to your law. The Jews therefore said unto him, It is not lawful for us to put any man to death:

31. Pilate said, "Take him yourselves and judge him according to your own law." But they replied, "We ourselves are not allowed to put anyone to death."

32. That the saying of Jesus might be fulfilled, which he spake, signifying what death he should die.

32. It was clear from this what kind of death Jesus was to die, according to what Jesus himself had foretold.

33. Then Pilate entered into the judgment hall again, and called Jesus, and said unto him, Art thou the King of the Jews?

33. Pilate then entered the court again, called Jesus and asked him, "Are you the King of the Jews?"

34. Jesus answered him, Sayest thou this thing of thyself, or did others tell it thee of me?

34. Jesus replied, "Does this word come from you, or did you hear it from others?"

35. Pilate answered, Am I a Jew? Thine own nation and the chief priests have delivered thee unto me: what hast thou done?

35. Pilate answered, "Am I a Jew? Your own nation and the chief priests have handed you over to me. What have you done?"

36. Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence.

36. Jesus answered, "My kingship does not come from this world. If I were king like those of this world, my guards would have fought to save me from being handed over to the Jews. But my kingship is not from here."

37. Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice.

37. Pilate asked him, "So you are a king?" And Jesus answered, "Just as you say, I am a king. For this I was born and for this I have come into the world, to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is on the side of truth hears my voice."

38. Pilate saith unto him, What is truth? And when he had said this, he went out again unto the Jews, and saith unto them, I find in him no fault [at all].

38. Pilate said, "What is truth?" Pilate then went out to the Jews again and said, "I find no crime in this man.

39. But ye have a custom, that I should release unto you one at the passover: will ye therefore that I release unto you the King of the Jews?

39. Now, according to a custom, I must release a prisoner of yours at the Passover. With your agreement I will release for you the King of the Jews."

40. Then cried they all again, saying, Not this man, but Barabbas. Now Barabbas was a robber.

40. But they insisted and cried out, "Not this man, but Barabbas!" Now Barabbas was a robber.
