Obadiah, 1

1. The vision of Obadiah. (Thus says the Lord GOD:) Of Edom we have heard a message from the LORD, and a herald has been sent among the nations: "Up! let us go to war against him!"

1. Vision of Obadiah: about Edom. I have received a message from Yahweh, a herald has been sent throughout the nations: 'Up! Let us march against this people. Into battle!' The Lord Yahweh says this:

2. See, I make you small among the nations; you are held in dire contempt.

2. Look, I have reduced you to the smallest of nations, you are now beneath contempt.

3. The pride of your heart has deceived you: you who dwell in the clefts of the rock, whose abode is in the heights, Who say in your heart, "Who will bring me down to earth?"

3. Your proud heart has misled you, you whose home is in the crannies of the Rock, who make the heights your dwelling, who think to yourself, 'Who can bring me down to earth?'

4. Though you go as high as the eagle, and your nest be set among the stars, From there will I bring you down, says the LORD.

4. Though you soar like an eagle, though you set your nest among the stars, I shall bring you down from there!-declares Yahweh.

5. If thieves came to you, if robbers by night, how could you be thus destroyed: would they not steal merely till they had enough? If vintagers came to you, would they not leave some gleanings?

5. If thieves were to come to you (or robbers during the night) surely they would steal only as much as they wanted? If grape-pickers were to come to you, surely they would leave a few gleanings? But how you have been pillaged!

6. How they search Esau, seek out his hiding places!

6. How Esau has been looted, his hidden treasures routed out!

7. To the border they drive you -- all your allies; They deceive you, they overpower you-- those at peace with you; Those who eat your bread lay snares beneath you: There is no understanding in him!

7. Your allies all pursued you right to the frontier, your confederates kept you in suspense, then got the better of you, your own guests laid a trap for you, 'He has quite lost his wits.'

8. Shall I not, says the LORD, on that day make the wise men disappear from Edom, and understanding from the mount of Esau?

8. When that day comes- declares Yahweh- shall I not eliminate sages from Edom and intelligence from Mount Esau?

9. Your warriors, O Teman, shall be crushed, till all on Mount Esau are destroyed.

9. Your warriors, Teman, will be so demoralised that the people of Mount Esau will be massacred to the last one. For the slaughter,

10. Because of violence to your brother Jacob, disgrace shall cover you and you shall be destroyed forever.

10. for the violence done to your brother Jacob, shame will cover you and you will be annihilated for ever.

11. On the day when you stood by, on the day when aliens carried off his possessions, And strangers entered his gates and cast lots over Jerusalem, you too were one of them.

11. On the day, when you stood aloof while strangers carried off his riches, while foreigners passed through his gate and cast lots for Jerusalem, you were as bad as the rest of them.

12. Gaze not upon the day of your brother, the day of his disaster; Exult not over the children of Judah on the day of their ruin; Speak not haughtily on the day of distress!

12. Do not feast your eyes on your brother on the day of his misfortune. Do not gloat over the children of Judah on the day of their ruin. Do not play the braggart on the day of distress.

13. Enter not the gate of my people on the day of their calamity; Gaze not, you at least, upon his misfortune on the day of his calamity; Lay not hands upon his possessions on the day of his calamity!

13. Do not enter my people's gate on their day of calamity. Do not, you especially, feast your eyes on their suffering on their day of calamity. Do not touch their possessions on their day of calamity.

14. Stand not at the crossroads to slay his refugees; Betray not his fugitives on the day of distress!

14. Do not wait at the crossroads to annihilate their fugitives. Do not hand over their survivors on the day of distress.

15. For near is the day of the LORD for all the nations! As you have done, so shall it be done to you, your deed shall come back upon your own head;

15. For the Day of Yahweh is near for all the nations. As you have done, so will it be done to you: your deeds will recoil on your own head.

16. As you have drunk upon my holy mountain, so shall all the nations drink continually. Yes, they shall drink and swallow, and shall become as though they had not been.

16. Just as you have drunk on my holy mountain, so will all the nations drink continually, they will drink, will drink greedily, but they will be as though they had never been!

17. But on Mount Zion there shall be a portion saved; the mountain shall be holy, And the house of Jacob shall take possession of those that dispossessed them.

17. But on Mount Zion will be those who have escaped -it will be a sanctuary- and the House of Jacob will recover what is rightfully theirs.

18. The house of Jacob shall be a fire, and the house of Joseph a flame; The house of Esau shall be stubble, and they shall set them ablaze and devour them; Then none shall survive of the house of Esau, for the LORD has spoken.

18. Then the House of Jacob will be a fire, the House of Joseph a flame, and the House of Esau like stubble. They will set it alight and burn it up, and no one of the House of Esau will survive. Yahweh has spoken.

19. They shall occupy the Negeb, the mount of Esau, and the foothills of the Philistines; And they shall occupy the lands of Ephraim and the lands of Samaria, and Benjamin shall occupy Gilead.

19. People from the Negeb will occupy the Mount of Esau, people from the lowlands the country of the Philistines; they will occupy Ephraim and Samaria, and Benjamin will occupy Gilead.

20. The captives of the host of the children of Israel shall occupy the Canaanite land as far as Zarephath, And the captives of Jerusalem who are in Sepharad shall occupy the cities of the Negeb.

20. The exiles of this army, the sons of Israel, will have the Canaanites' land as far as Zarephthah, while the exiles from Jerusalem now in Sepharad will have the cities of the Negeb.

21. And saviors shall ascend Mount Zion to rule the mount of Esau, and the kingship shall be the LORD'S.

21. Victorious, they will climb Mount Zion to rule over Mount Esau, and sovereignty will be Yahweh's!

1:1-2 - La visione di Abdia è un messaggio di giudizio contro Edom, una nazione discendente da Esaù. La profezia sottolinea la sovranità di Dio su tutte le nazioni e il Suo giudizio contro l'orgoglio e la violenza. Edom è ritenuto responsabile del suo atteggiamento ostile nei confronti di Israele e il messaggio mette in guardia dalle conseguenze dell'orgoglio nazionale (vedi anche Geremia 49:7-10 e Isaia 10:12-15).

1:3-4 - L'orgoglio di Edom viene condannato, poiché faceva affidamento sulla propria posizione geografica e sulla propria ricchezza per sentirsi invulnerabile. Dio avverte che, per quanto in alto si trovino, nulla può impedire il giudizio divino. Questo brano evidenzia la fragilità umana di fronte al potere sovrano di Dio, che abbassa i superbi ed esalta gli umili (vedi anche Giacomo 4:6 e Proverbi 16:18).

1:5-9 - Il giudizio contro Edom è illustrato da una serie di immagini di distruzione, come saccheggi e rapine, che si abbattono su di loro. Dio rivela che le alleanze e la forza umana non sono sufficienti a salvare la nazione dalla distruzione imminente. La caduta di Edom è un esempio del fatto che la fiducia nelle forze terrene è vana di fronte alla potenza di Dio (vedi anche Geremia 49:10-14 e Luca 12:16-21).

1:10-14 - Viene sottolineato il tradimento di Edom durante l'attacco a Gerusalemme. Essi gioirono della distruzione di Israele e persino aiutarono i loro nemici, evidenziandone la crudeltà e la mancanza di misericordia. Questo brano sottolinea l'importanza di agire con compassione e lealtà, soprattutto nei momenti di avversità, e mostra le conseguenze del non essere un buon alleato (vedi anche Matteo 25:31-46 e Salmo 137:7-9).

Il Regno di Dio sarà stabilito e la terra sarà restaurata, con il governo dei giusti. Questa visione indica il trionfo della giustizia e il regno eterno di Dio (vedi anche Apocalisse 19:11-16 e Matteo 5:5).

Versi relativi a Obadiah, 1:

Abdias, il libro più breve dell'Antico Testamento, profetizza contro Edom. Perché Dio condanna questa nazione vicina? Questo testo conciso denuncia l'orgoglio di Edom e il tradimento di Giuda. Il libro predice il giudizio divino su Edom e l'eventuale restaurazione di Israele. Abdias stabilisce i principi sulle conseguenze dell'orgoglio e della mancanza di compassione. Il libro si conclude con l'affermazione della sovranità di Dio su tutte le nazioni. Geremia 49:14: "Ho sentito un messaggio dal Signore; fu inviato un messaggero alle nazioni per dire: 'Radunatevi per attaccarla! Preparatevi alla battaglia!'" - Questo versetto riecheggia l'inizio di Abdias, mostrando un tema profetico simile contro Edom.

Amos 9:12: "affinché possiedano il resto di Edom e tutte le nazioni che portano il mio nome, dice il Signore, che farà queste cose." - Amos profetizza anche contro Edom, allineandosi al messaggio di Abdias.

Salmi 137:7: "Ricorda, Signore, gli edomiti e ciò che fecero quando Gerusalemme fu distrutta, quando gridarono: "Distruggetela!". Demolitelo fino alle fondamenta!'" - Questo salmo ricorda l'ostilità di Edom verso Gerusalemme, tema centrale in Abdias.

Ezechiele 35:15: "Come tu ti rallegrasti quando l'eredità della nazione d'Israele fu devastata, così io farò con te. Sarai devastato, o monte Seir, tu e tutto Edom. Allora sapranno che io sono il Signore." - Ezechiele profetizza contro Edom in modo simile ad Abdia, sottolineando il giudizio divino.

Malachia 1:3-4: "ma io ho rifiutato Esaù, ho trasformato i suoi monti in un deserto e ho dato la sua eredità agli sciacalli del deserto. Sebbene Edom dica: "Siamo stati schiacciati, ma ricostruiremo le rovine", così dice il Signore degli eserciti: Essi possono costruire, ma io demolirò. Si chiameranno Terra Malvagia, popolo contro il quale il Signore è adirato per sempre." - Malachia ribadisce il giudizio contro Edom, facendo eco ai temi di Abdia.
