0. A Psalm of David.

1. [Of David] Do not get heated about the wicked or envy those who do wrong.

1. Fret not yourself because of the wicked, be not envious of wrongdoers!

2. Quick as the grass they wither, fading like the green of the fields.

2. For they will soon fade like the grass, and wither like the green herb.

3. Put your trust in Yahweh and do right, make your home in the land and live secure.

3. Trust in the LORD, and do good; so you will dwell in the land, and enjoy security.

4. Make Yahweh your joy and he will give you your heart's desires.

4. Take delight in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart.

5. Commit your destiny to Yahweh, be confident in him, and he will act,

5. Commit your way to the LORD; trust in him, and he will act.

6. making your uprightness clear as daylight, and the justice of your cause as the noon.

6. He will bring forth your vindication as the light, and your right as the noonday.

7. Stay quiet before Yahweh, wait longingly for him, do not get heated over someone who is making a fortune, succeeding by devious means.

7. Be still before the LORD, and wait patiently for him; fret not yourself over him who prospers in his way, over the man who carries out evil devices!

8. Refrain from anger, leave rage aside, do not get heated -- it can do no good;

8. Refrain from anger, and forsake wrath! Fret not yourself; it tends only to evil.

9. for evil-doers will be annihilated, while those who hope in Yahweh shall have the land for their own.

9. For the wicked shall be cut off; but those who wait for the LORD shall possess the land.

10. A little while and the wicked will be no more, however well you search for the place, the wicked will not be there;

10. Yet a little while, and the wicked will be no more; though you look well at his place, he will not be there.

11. but the poor will have the land for their own, to enjoy untroubled peace.

11. But the meek shall possess the land, and delight themselves in abundant prosperity.

12. The wicked plots against the upright and gnashes his teeth at him,

13. but Yahweh only laughs at his efforts, knowing that his end is in sight.

13. but the LORD laughs at the wicked, for he sees that his day is coming.

14. Though the wicked draw his sword and bend his bow to slaughter the honest and bring down the poor and the needy,

14. The wicked draw the sword and bend their bows, to bring down the poor and needy, to slay those who walk uprightly;

15. his sword will pierce his own heart, and his bow will be shattered.

15. their sword shall enter their own heart, and their bows shall be broken.

16. What little the upright possesses outweighs all the wealth of the wicked;

16. Better is a little that the righteous has than the abundance of many wicked.

17. for the weapons of the wicked shall be shattered, while Yahweh supports the upright.

17. For the arms of the wicked shall be broken; but the LORD upholds the righteous.

18. The lives of the just are in Yahweh's care, their birthright will endure for ever;

18. The LORD knows the days of the blameless, and their heritage will abide for ever;

19. they will not be put to shame when bad times come, in time of famine they will have plenty.

19. they are not put to shame in evil times, in the days of famine they have abundance.

20. The wicked, enemies of Yahweh, will be destroyed, they will vanish like the green of the pasture, they will vanish in smoke.

20. But the wicked perish; the enemies of the LORD are like the glory of the pastures, they vanish -- like smoke they vanish away.

21. The wicked borrows and will not repay, but the upright is generous in giving;

21. The wicked borrows, and cannot pay back, but the righteous is generous and gives;

22. those he blesses will have the land for their own, and those he curses be annihilated.

22. for those blessed by the LORD shall possess the land, but those cursed by him shall be cut off.

23. Yahweh guides a strong man's steps and keeps them firm; and takes pleasure in him.

23. The steps of a man are from the LORD, and he establishes him in whose way he delights;

24. When he trips he is not thrown sprawling, since Yahweh supports him by the hand.

24. though he fall, he shall not be cast headlong, for the LORD is the stay of his hand.

25. Now I am old, but ever since my youth I never saw an upright person abandoned, or the descendants of the upright forced to beg their bread.

25. I have been young, and now am old; yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken or his children begging bread.

26. The upright is always compassionate, always lending, so his descendants reap a blessing.

26. He is ever giving liberally and lending, and his children become a blessing.

27. Turn your back on evil and do good, you will have a home for ever,

27. Depart from evil, and do good; so shall you abide for ever.

28. for Yahweh loves justice and will not forsake his faithful. Evil-doers will perish eternally, the descendants of the wicked be annihilated,

28. For the LORD loves justice; he will not forsake his saints. The righteous shall be preserved for ever, but the children of the wicked shall be cut off.

29. but the upright shall have the land for their own, there they shall live for ever.

29. The righteous shall possess the land, and dwell upon it for ever.

30. Wisdom comes from the lips of the upright, and his tongue speaks what is right;

30. The mouth of the righteous utters wisdom, and his tongue speaks justice.

31. the law of his God is in his heart, his foot will never slip.

31. The law of his God is in his heart; his steps do not slip.

32. The wicked keeps a close eye on the upright, looking out for a chance to kill him;

32. The wicked watches the righteous, and seeks to slay him.

33. Yahweh will never abandon him to the clutches of the wicked, nor let him be condemned if he is tried.

33. The LORD will not abandon him to his power, or let him be condemned when he is brought to trial.

34. Put your hope in Yahweh, keep to his path, he will raise you up to make the land your own; you will look on while the wicked are annihilated.

34. Wait for the LORD, and keep to his way, and he will exalt you to possess the land; you will look on the destruction of the wicked.

35. I have seen the wicked exultant, towering like a cedar of Lebanon.

35. I have seen a wicked man overbearing, and towering like a cedar of Lebanon.

36. When next I passed he was gone, I searched for him and he was nowhere to be found.

36. Again I passed by, and, lo, he was no more; though I sought him, he could not be found.

37. Observe the innocent, consider the honest, for the lover of peace will not lack children.

37. Mark the blameless man, and behold the upright, for there is posterity for the man of peace.

38. But the wicked will all be destroyed together, and their children annihilated.

38. But transgressors shall be altogether destroyed; the posterity of the wicked shall be cut off.

39. The upright have Yahweh for their Saviour, their refuge in times of trouble;

39. The salvation of the righteous is from the LORD; he is their refuge in the time of trouble.

40. Yahweh helps them and rescues them, he will rescue them from the wicked, and save them because they take refuge in him.

40. The LORD helps them and delivers them; he delivers them from the wicked, and saves them, because they take refuge in him.

37:1-2 - Questo salmo inizia con un'esortazione a non adirarsi con i malvagi, sottolineando la prosperità temporanea degli ingiusti. La fiducia in Dio è presentata come un antidoto all'invidia e alla preoccupazione (vedi anche Salmo 73:3-5 e Proverbi 24:19).

37:3-5 - L'insegnamento di confidare nel Signore e di fare il bene sottolinea l'importanza di agire correttamente e di dipendere da Dio. Abbandonandoci a Dio, troviamo vera soddisfazione e direzione nella nostra vita (vedere anche Proverbi 3:5-6 e Matteo 6:33).

37:7-9 - Il salmista ci esorta ad attendere pazientemente il Signore e a non lasciarci turbare dalla prosperità dei malvagi. Questa pazienza è testimonianza di fede e di fiducia nel piano divino, che assicura la giustizia (cfr. anche Lamentazioni 3,25-26 e Giacomo 5,7-8).

37:25-26 - L'affermazione che i giusti non saranno mai abbandonati è una potente affermazione sulla fedeltà di Dio. La provvidenza di Dio per i giusti è un tema ricorrente nelle Scritture, che riafferma la Sua costante cura (vedere anche Salmo 23:1 e Filippesi 4:19).

37:39-40 - La salvezza del Signore per i giusti e il rifugio che Egli offre sono un messaggio di speranza. Questo salmo si conclude con una promessa di protezione e liberazione per coloro che confidano in Dio, sottolineando la Sua misericordia (vedi anche Salmo 91:14-16 e Romani 10:13).

Il Salmo 37 offre saggezza per i momenti di ingiustizia. Come possiamo mantenere la fede quando i malvagi prosperano? Questo salmo acrostico di Davide consiglia pazienza e fiducia in Dio di fronte all'apparente prosperità dei malfattori. Ebrei 10:37: "Perché presto, molto presto: "Colui che viene, verrà e non tarderà"." - Questo passaggio riecheggia il tema dell'attesa paziente del Signore nel Salmo 37:7.

1 Pietro 3:10-11: "Infatti «chi vuole amare la vita e vedere giorni felici, deve trattenere la sua lingua dal male e le sue labbra dalla menzogna». Allontanatevi dal male e fate il bene; cercare la pace con perseveranza'." - Pietro cita Salmo 37:27, sottolineando l’importanza di fare il bene.

Proverbi 16:3: "Consacra al Signore tutto ciò che fai e i tuoi progetti avranno successo." - Questo proverbio riflette il consiglio dato nel Salmo 37:5 di confidare nel Signore.

Giacomo 1:19-20: "Miei cari fratelli, tenete presente questo: siate tutti pronti ad ascoltare, lenti a parlare e lenti ad arrabbiarsi, perché l'ira dell'uomo non produce la giustizia di Dio." - Questo passaggio si riferisce al consiglio contenuto nel Salmo 37:8 di non arrabbiarsi.
