John, 14

1. Do not let your hearts be troubled. You trust in God, trust also in me.

1. "Let not your hearts be troubled; believe in God, believe also in me.

2. In my Father's house there are many places to live in; otherwise I would have told you. I am going now to prepare a place for you,

2. In my Father's house are many rooms; if it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you?

3. and after I have gone and prepared you a place, I shall return to take you to myself, so that you may be with me where I am.

3. And when I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also.

4. You know the way to the place where I am going.

5. Thomas said, 'Lord, we do not know where you are going, so how can we know the way?'

6. Jesus said: I am the Way; I am Truth and Life. No one can come to the Father except through me.

7. If you know me, you will know my Father too. From this moment you know him and have seen him.

8. Philip said, 'Lord, show us the Father and then we shall be satisfied.' Jesus said to him,

9. 'Have I been with you all this time, Philip, and you still do not know me? 'Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father, so how can you say, "Show us the Father"?

9. Jesus said to him, "Have I been with you so long, and yet you do not know me, Philip? He who has seen me has seen the Father; how can you say, `Show us the Father'?

10. Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? What I say to you I do not speak of my own accord: it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his works.

10. Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own authority; but the Father who dwells in me does his works.

11. You must believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe it on the evidence of these works.

11. Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father in me; or else believe me for the sake of the works themselves.

12. In all truth I tell you, whoever believes in me will perform the same works as I do myself, and will perform even greater works, because I am going to the Father.

13. Whatever you ask in my name I will do, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son.

18. I shall not leave you orphans; I shall come to you.

19. In a short time the world will no longer see me; but you will see that I live and you also will live.

19. Yet a little while, and the world will see me no more, but you will see me; because I live, you will live also.

20. On that day you will know that I am in my Father and you in me and I in you.

21. Whoever holds to my commandments and keeps them is the one who loves me; and whoever loves me will be loved by my Father, and I shall love him and reveal myself to him.'

21. He who has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me; and he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him."

22. Judas -- not Judas Iscariot -- said to him, 'Lord, what has happened, that you intend to show yourself to us and not to the world?'

22. Judas (not Iscariot) said to him, "Lord, how is it that you will manifest yourself to us, and not to the world?"

23. Jesus replied: Anyone who loves me will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we shall come to him and make a home in him.

23. Jesus answered him, "If a man loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him.

24. Anyone who does not love me does not keep my words. And the word that you hear is not my own: it is the word of the Father who sent me.

24. He who does not love me does not keep my words; and the word which you hear is not mine but the Father's who sent me.

25. I have said these things to you while still with you;

25. "These things I have spoken to you, while I am still with you.

26. but the Paraclete, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything and remind you of all I have said to you.

26. But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.

27. Peace I bequeath to you, my own peace I give you, a peace which the world cannot give, this is my gift to you. Do not let your hearts be troubled or afraid.

27. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.

28. You heard me say: I am going away and shall return. If you loved me you would be glad that I am going to the Father, for the Father is greater than I.

28. You heard me say to you, `I go away, and I will come to you.' If you loved me, you would have rejoiced, because I go to the Father; for the Father is greater than I.

29. I have told you this now, before it happens, so that when it does happen you may believe.

29. And now I have told you before it takes place, so that when it does take place, you may believe.

30. I shall not talk to you much longer, because the prince of this world is on his way. He has no power over me,

30. I will no longer talk much with you, for the ruler of this world is coming. He has no power over me;

31. but the world must recognise that I love the Father and that I act just as the Father commanded. Come now, let us go.

31. but I do as the Father has commanded me, so that the world may know that I love the Father. Rise, let us go hence.

14:1-4 - Gesù conforta i discepoli, promettendo che preparerà loro un posto nella casa del Padre. Egli è la via, la verità e la vita, e solo attraverso di Lui possiamo raggiungere il Padre, sottolineando l'esclusività della salvezza in Cristo (vedi anche Atti 4:12 e 1 Timoteo 2:5).

14:5-7 - Tommaso chiede quale sia il cammino che Gesù sta percorrendo, e Gesù afferma che Lui è l'unica via per raggiungere il Padre. La verità e la vita in Cristo sono fondamentali per la salvezza, ed è impossibile raggiungere Dio senza di Lui (vedi anche Giovanni 6:40 e Giovanni 10:9).

14:8-11 - Filippo chiede di vedere il Padre e Gesù risponde che chi ha visto Lui ha visto il Padre. Gesù rivela la Sua divinità e unità con il Padre, dimostrando di essere la piena rivelazione di Dio sulla terra (vedi anche Giovanni 1:18 e Colossesi 1:15).

14:12-14 - Gesù promette che coloro che credono in Lui compiranno opere ancora più grandi, evidenziando il potere della preghiera nel Suo nome. La preghiera nel nome di Gesù è sicuramente esaudita perché è in linea con la volontà di Dio (vedi anche Matteo 7:7-8 e Giovanni 15:7).

14:15-17 - Gesù promette di inviare lo Spirito Santo, il Consolatore, affinché dimori nei discepoli e li guidi a tutta la verità. Lo Spirito è essenziale per la vita cristiana, poiché dà ai credenti la forza di vivere secondo la volontà di Dio (cfr. anche Giovanni 16:13 e Atti 1:8).

Versi relativi a John, 14:

Giovanni capitolo 14 presenta Gesù come la via, la verità e la vita. In che modo conforta i Suoi discepoli al momento della Sua partenza? Questo testo confortante promette la venuta dello Spirito Santo, la pace di Cristo e l'unione con il Padre. Il capitolo affronta argomenti come l'esclusività di Gesù per la salvezza, l'opera dello Spirito e l'importanza dell'obbedienza. Giovanni 14 offre speranza nel mezzo della tristezza imminente. Consideriamo con noi cinque passaggi biblici che illuminano le preziose promesse di questo capitolo confortante.

Deuteronomio 6:4: "Ascolta, Israele: il Signore, nostro Dio, è un solo Signore." - Gesù riafferma questa affermazione fondamentale della fede ebraica quando dice: "Io sono la via, la verità e la vita. Nessuno viene al Padre se non per mezzo di me".

Gioele 2:28: "E avverrà dopo che io spanderò il mio Spirito sopra ogni carne; i vostri figli e le vostre figlie profetizzeranno, i vostri vecchi sogneranno e i vostri giovani avranno visioni." - La promessa dello Spirito Santo da parte di Gesù in Giovanni 14:16-17 fa eco a questa profezia di Gioele.

Salmi 27:1: "Il Signore è mia luce e mia salvezza; Di chi avrò paura? Il Signore è la forza della mia vita; chi avrò paura?" - Le confortanti parole di Gesù in Giovanni 14:1 ("Non sia turbato il vostro cuore") riflettono la fiducia espressa in questo salmo.

Ezechiele 36:27: "Metterò il mio Spirito dentro di voi e vi condurrò ad agire secondo i miei decreti e ad obbedire fedelmente alle mie leggi." - La promessa dello Spirito Santo da parte di Gesù in Giovanni 14:26 adempie questa profezia di Ezechiele.

Isaia 9:6: "Perché un bambino ci è nato, ci è stato dato un figlio e il governo è sulle sue spalle. E sarà chiamato Consigliere meraviglioso, Dio potente, Padre eterno, Principe della pace." - Le dichiarazioni di Gesù sulla sua unità con il Padre in Giovanni 14:9-11 fanno eco a questa profezia messianica di Isaia.
