Acts, 18

1. After this Paul left Athens and went to Corinth,

1. After this he left Athens and went to Corinth.

2. where he met a Jew called Aquila whose family came from Pontus. He and his wife Priscilla had recently left Italy because an edict of Claudius had expelled all the Jews from Rome. Paul went to visit them,

2. And he found a Jew named Aq'uila, a native of Pontus, lately come from Italy with his wife Priscilla, because Claudius had commanded all the Jews to leave Rome. And he went to see them;

3. and when he found they were tentmakers, of the same trade as himself, he lodged with them, and they worked together.

3. and because he was of the same trade he stayed with them, and they worked, for by trade they were tentmakers.

4. Every Sabbath he used to hold debates in the synagogues, trying to convert Jews as well as Greeks.

4. And he argued in the synagogue every sabbath, and persuaded Jews and Greeks.

5. After Silas and Timothy had arrived from Macedonia, Paul devoted all his time to preaching, declaring to the Jews that Jesus was the Christ.

5. When Silas and Timothy arrived from Macedo'nia, Paul was occupied with preaching, testifying to the Jews that the Christ was Jesus.

6. When they turned against him and started to insult him, he took his cloak and shook it out in front of them, saying, 'Your blood be on your own heads; from now on I will go to the gentiles with a clear conscience.'

6. And when they opposed and reviled him, he shook out his garments and said to them, "Your blood be upon your heads! I am innocent. From now on I will go to the Gentiles."

7. Then he left the synagogue and moved to the house next door that belonged to a worshipper of God called Justus.

7. And he left there and went to the house of a man named Titius Justus, a worshiper of God; his house was next door to the synagogue.

8. Crispus, president of the synagogue, and his whole household, all became believers in the Lord. Many Corinthians when they heard this became believers and were baptised.

8. Crispus, the ruler of the synagogue, believed in the Lord, together with all his household; and many of the Corinthians hearing Paul believed and were baptized.

9. One night the Lord spoke to Paul in a vision, 'Be fearless; speak out and do not keep silence:

9. And the Lord said to Paul one night in a vision, "Do not be afraid, but speak and do not be silent;

10. I am with you. I have so many people that belong to me in this city that no one will attempt to hurt you.'

10. for I am with you, and no man shall attack you to harm you; for I have many people in this city."

11. So Paul stayed there preaching the word of God among them for eighteen months.

11. And he stayed a year and six months, teaching the word of God among them.

12. But while Gallio was proconsul of Achaia, the Jews made a concerted attack on Paul and brought him before the tribunal, saying,

12. But when Gallio was proconsul of Acha'ia, the Jews made a united attack upon Paul and brought him before the tribunal,

13. 'We accuse this man of persuading people to worship God in a way that breaks the Law.'

13. saying, "This man is persuading men to worship God contrary to the law."

14. Before Paul could open his mouth, Gallio said to the Jews, 'Listen, you Jews. If this were a misdemeanour or a crime, it would be in order for me to listen to your plea;

14. But when Paul was about to open his mouth, Gallio said to the Jews, "If it were a matter of wrongdoing or vicious crime, I should have reason to bear with you, O Jews;

15. but if it is only quibbles about words and names, and about your own Law, then you must deal with it yourselves -- I have no intention of making legal decisions about these things.'

15. but since it is a matter of questions about words and names and your own law, see to it yourselves; I refuse to be a judge of these things."

16. Then he began to hustle them out of the court,

16. And he drove them from the tribunal.

17. and at once they all turned on Sosthenes, the synagogue president, and beat him in front of the tribunal. Gallio refused to take any notice at all.

17. And they all seized Sos'thenes, the ruler of the synagogue, and beat him in front of the tribunal. But Gallio paid no attention to this.

18. After staying on for some time, Paul took leave of the brothers and sailed for Syria, accompanied by Priscilla and Aquila. At Cenchreae he had his hair cut off, because of a vow he had made.

18. After this Paul stayed many days longer, and then took leave of the brethren and sailed for Syria, and with him Priscilla and Aq'uila. At Cen'chre-ae he cut his hair, for he had a vow.

19. When they reached Ephesus, he left them, but first he went alone to the synagogue to debate with the Jews.

19. And they came to Ephesus, and he left them there; but he himself went into the synagogue and argued with the Jews.

20. They asked him to stay longer, but he declined,

20. When they asked him to stay for a longer period, he declined;

21. though when he took his leave he said, 'I will come back another time, God willing.' Then he sailed from Ephesus.

21. but on taking leave of them he said, "I will return to you if God wills," and he set sail from Ephesus.

22. He landed at Caesarea and went up to greet the church. Then he came down to Antioch

22. When he had landed at Caesare'a, he went up and greeted the church, and then went down to Antioch.

23. where he spent a short time before continuing his journey through the Galatian country and then through Phrygia, encouraging all the followers.

23. After spending some time there he departed and went from place to place through the region of Galatia and Phryg'ia, strengthening all the disciples.

24. An Alexandrian Jew named Apollos now arrived in Ephesus. He was an eloquent man, with a sound knowledge of the scriptures, and yet,

24. Now a Jew named Apol'los, a native of Alexandria, came to Ephesus. He was an eloquent man, well versed in the scriptures.

25. though he had been given instruction in the Way of the Lord and preached with great spiritual fervour and was accurate in all the details he taught about Jesus, he had experienced only the baptism of John.

25. He had been instructed in the way of the Lord; and being fervent in spirit, he spoke and taught accurately the things concerning Jesus, though he knew only the baptism of John.

26. He began to teach fearlessly in the synagogue and, when Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they attached themselves to him and gave him more detailed instruction about the Way.

26. He began to speak boldly in the synagogue; but when Priscilla and Aq'uila heard him, they took him and expounded to him the way of God more accurately.

27. When Apollos thought of crossing over to Achaia, the brothers encouraged him and wrote asking the disciples to welcome him. When he arrived there he was able by God's grace to help the believers considerably

27. And when he wished to cross to Acha'ia, the brethren encouraged him, and wrote to the disciples to receive him. When he arrived, he greatly helped those who through grace had believed,

28. by the energetic way he refuted the Jews in public, demonstrating from the scriptures that Jesus was the Christ.

28. for he powerfully confuted the Jews in public, showing by the scriptures that the Christ was Jesus.
