Deuteronomy, 8

1. 'You must keep and put into practice all the commandments which I enjoin on you today, so that you may survive and increase in numbers and enter the country which Yahweh promised on oath to your ancestors, and make it your own.

1. Ihr sollt auf das ganze Gebot, auf das ich dich heute verpflichte, achten und es halten, damit ihr Leben habt und zahlreich werdet und in das Land, das der Herr euren Vätern mit einem Schwur versprochen hat, hineinziehen und es in Besitz nehmen könnt.

2. Remember the long road by which Yahweh your God led you for forty years in the desert, to humble you, to test you and know your inmost heart -- whether you would keep his commandments or not.

2. Du sollst an den ganzen Weg denken, den der Herr, dein Gott, dich während dieser vierzig Jahre in der Wüste geführt hat, um dich gefügig zu machen und dich zu prüfen. Er wollte erkennen, wie du dich entscheiden würdest: ob du auf seine Gebote achtest oder nicht.

3. He humbled you, he made you feel hunger, he fed you with manna which neither you nor your ancestors had ever known, to make you understand that human beings live not on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of Yahweh.

3. Durch Hunger hat er dich gefügig gemacht und hat dich dann mit dem Manna gespeist, das du nicht kanntest und das auch deine Väter nicht kannten. Er wollte dich erkennen lassen, dass der Mensch nicht nur von Brot lebt, sondern dass der Mensch von allem lebt, was der Mund des Herrn spricht.

4. The clothes on your back did not wear out and your feet were not swollen, all those forty years.

4. Deine Kleider sind dir nicht in Lumpen vom Leib gefallen und dein Fuß ist nicht geschwollen, diese vierzig Jahre lang.

5. 'Learn from this that Yahweh your God was training you as a man trains his child,

5. Daraus sollst du die Erkenntnis gewinnen, dass der Herr, dein Gott, dich erzieht, wie ein Vater seinen Sohn erzieht.

6. and keep the commandments of Yahweh your God, and so follow his ways and fear him.

6. Du sollst auf die Gebote des Herrn, deines Gottes, achten, auf seinen Wegen gehen und ihn fürchten.

7. 'But Yahweh your God is bringing you into a fine country, a land of streams and springs, of waters that well up from the deep in valleys and hills,

7. Wenn der Herr, dein Gott, dich in ein prächtiges Land führt, ein Land mit Bächen, Quellen und Grundwasser, das im Tal und am Berg hervorquillt,

8. a land of wheat and barley, of vines, of figs, of pomegranates, a land of olives, of oil, of honey,

8. ein Land mit Weizen und Gerste, mit Weinstock, Feigenbaum und Granatbaum, ein Land mit Ölbaum und Honig,

9. a land where you will eat bread without stint, where you will want nothing, a land where the stones are iron and where the hills may be quarried for copper.

9. ein Land, in dem du nicht armselig dein Brot essen musst, in dem es dir an nichts fehlt, ein Land, dessen Steine aus Eisen sind, aus dessen Bergen du Erz gewinnst;

10. You will eat and have all you want and you will bless Yahweh your God in the fine country which he has given you.

10. wenn du dort isst und satt wirst und den Herrn, deinen Gott, für das prächtige Land, das er dir gegeben hat, preist,

11. 'Be careful not to forget Yahweh your God, by neglecting his commandments, customs and laws which I am laying down for you today.

11. dann nimm dich in acht und vergiss den Herrn, deinen Gott, nicht, missachte nicht seine Gebote, Rechtsvorschriften und Gesetze, auf die ich dich heute verpflichte.

12. When you have eaten all you want, when you have built fine houses to live in,

12. Und wenn du gegessen hast und satt geworden bist und prächtige Häuser gebaut hast und sie bewohnst,

13. when you have seen your flocks and herds increase, your silver and gold abound and all your possessions grow great,

13. wenn deine Rinder, Schafe und Ziegen sich vermehren und Silber und Gold sich bei dir häuft und dein gesamter Besitz sich vermehrt,

14. do not become proud of heart. Do not then forget Yahweh your God who brought you out of Egypt, out of the place of slave-labour,

14. dann nimm dich in Acht, dass dein Herz nicht hochmütig wird und du den Herrn, deinen Gott, nicht vergisst, der dich aus Ägypten, dem Sklavenhaus, geführt hat;

15. who guided you through this vast and dreadful desert, a land of fiery snakes, scorpions, thirst;

15. der dich durch die große und Furcht erregende Wüste geführt hat, durch Feuernattern und Skorpione, durch ausgedörrtes Land, wo es kein Wasser gab; der für dich Wasser aus dem Felsen der Steilwand hervorsprudeln ließ;

16. who in this waterless place brought you water out of the flinty rock; who in this desert fed you with manna unknown to your ancestors, to humble you and test you and so make your future the happier.

16. der dich in der Wüste mit dem Manna speiste, das deine Väter noch nicht kannten, (und der das alles tat,) um dich gefügig zu machen, dich zu prüfen und dir zuletzt Gutes zu tun.

17. 'Beware of thinking to yourself, "My own strength and the might of my own hand have given me the power to act like this."

17. Dann nimm dich in Acht und denk nicht bei dir: Ich habe mir diesen Reichtum aus eigener Kraft und mit eigener Hand erworben.

18. Remember Yahweh your God; he was the one who gave you the strength to act effectively like this, thus keeping then, as today, the covenant which he swore to your ancestors.

18. Denk vielmehr an den Herrn, deinen Gott: Er war es, der dir die Kraft gab, Reichtum zu erwerben, weil er seinen Bund, den er deinen Vätern geschworen hatte, so verwirklichen wollte, wie er es heute tut.

19. Be sure: if you forget Yahweh your God, if you follow other gods, if you serve them and bow down to them -- I testify to you today -- you will perish.

19. Wenn du aber den Herrn, deinen Gott, vergisst und anderen Göttern nachfolgst, ihnen dienst und dich vor ihnen niederwirfst - heute rufe ich Zeugen gegen euch an: dann werdet ihr völlig ausgetilgt werden.

20. Like the nations Yahweh is to destroy before you, so you yourselves will perish, for not having listened to the voice of Yahweh your God.'

20. Wie die Völker, die der Herr bei eurem Angriff austilgt, so werdet auch ihr dafür ausgetilgt werden, dass ihr nicht auf die Stimme des Herrn, eures Gottes, gehört habt.
