Prophetia Danielis, 3

1. Nabuchodonosor rex fecit sta tuam auream altitudine cubito rum sexaginta, latitudine cubitorum sex; et statuit eam in campo Dura in provincia Babylonis.

1. King Nebuchadnez'zar made an image of gold, whose height was sixty cubits and its breadth six cubits. He set it up on the plain of Dura, in the province of Babylon.

2. Itaque Nabuchodonosor rex misit ad congregandos satrapas, magistratus et iudices, duces et tyrannos et praefectos omnesque principes provinciarum, ut convenirent ad dedicationem statuae, quam erexerat Nabuchodonosor rex.

2. Then King Nebuchadnez'zar sent to assemble the satraps, the prefects, and the governors, the counselors, the treasurers, the justices, the magistrates, and all the officials of the provinces to come to the dedication of the image which King Nebuchadnez'zar had set up.

3. Tunc congregati sunt satrapae, magistratus et iudices, duces et tyranni et optimates, qui erant in potestatibus constituti, et universi principes provinciarum ad dedicationem statuae, quam erexerat Nabuchodonosor rex. Stabant autem in conspectu statuae, quam posuerat Nabuchodonosor,

3. Then the satraps, the prefects, and the governors, the counselors, the treasurers, the justices, the magistrates, and all the officials of the provinces, were assembled for the dedication of the image that King Nebuchadnez'zar had set up; and they stood before the image that Nebuchadnez'zar had set up.

4. et praeco clamabat valenter: “Vobis dicitur, populi, tribus et linguae:

4. And the herald proclaimed aloud, "You are commanded, O peoples, nations, and languages,

5. in hora, qua audieritis sonitum tubae et fistulae et citharae, sambucae et psalterii et symphoniae et universi generis musicorum, cadentes adorate statuam auream, quam constituit Nabuchodonosor rex.

5. that when you hear the sound of the horn, pipe, lyre, trigon, harp, bagpipe, and every kind of music, you are to fall down and worship the golden image that King Nebuchadnez'zar has set up;

6. Si quis autem non prostratus adoraverit, eadem hora mittetur in fornacem ignis ardentis”.

6. and whoever does not fall down and worship shall immediately be cast into a burning fiery furnace."

7. Post haec igitur, statim ut audierunt omnes populi sonitum tubae, fistulae et citharae, sambucae et psalterii et symphoniae et omnis generis musicorum, cadentes omnes populi tribus et linguae adoraverunt statuam auream, quam constituerat Nabuchodonosor rex.

7. Therefore, as soon as all the peoples heard the sound of the horn, pipe, lyre, trigon, harp, bagpipe, and every kind of music, all the peoples, nations, and languages fell down and worshiped the golden image which King Nebuchadnez'zar had set up.

8. Statimque et in ipso tempore accedentes viri Chaldaei accusaverunt Iudaeos

8. Therefore at that time certain Chalde'ans came forward and maliciously accused the Jews.

9. dixeruntque Nabuchodonosor regi: “Rex, in aeternum vive!

9. They said to King Nebuchadnez'zar, "O king, live for ever!

10. Tu, rex, posuisti decretum, ut omnis homo, qui audierit sonitum tubae, fistulae et citharae, sambucae et psalterii et symphoniae et universi generis musicorum, prosternat se et adoret statuam auream;

10. You, O king, have made a decree, that every man who hears the sound of the horn, pipe, lyre, trigon, harp, bagpipe, and every kind of music, shall fall down and worship the golden image;

11. si quis autem non procidens adoraverit, mittetur in fornacem ignis ardentis.

11. and whoever does not fall down and worship shall be cast into a burning fiery furnace.

12. Sunt ergo viri Iudaei, quos constituisti super opera provinciae Babylonis, Sedrac, Misac et Abdenago; viri isti te, rex, non honorant: deos tuos non colunt et statuam auream, quam erexisti, non adorant”.

12. There are certain Jews whom you have appointed over the affairs of the province of Babylon: Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed'nego. These men, O king, pay no heed to you; they do not serve your gods or worship the golden image which you have set up."

13. Tunc Nabuchodonosor in furore et in ira praecepit, ut adducerentur Sedrac, Misac et Abdenago; tunc viri illi adducti sunt in conspectu regis.

13. Then Nebuchadnez'zar in furious rage commanded that Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed'nego be brought. Then they brought these men before the king.

14. Pronuntiansque Nabuchodonosor rex ait eis: “Verene, Sedrac, Misac et Abdenago, deos meos non colitis et statuam auream, quam constitui, non adoratis?

14. Nebuchadnez'zar said to them, "Is it true, O Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed'nego, that you do not serve my gods or worship the golden image which I have set up?

15. Numquid estis nunc parati, quacumque hora audieritis sonitum tubae, fistulae, citharae, sambucae, psalterii et symphoniae omnisque generis musicorum, prosternere vos et adorare statuam, quam feci? Quod si non adoraveritis, eadem hora mittemini in fornacem ignis ardentis; et quis est deus, qui eripiat vos de manu mea?”.

15. Now if you are ready when you hear the sound of the horn, pipe, lyre, trigon, harp, bagpipe, and every kind of music, to fall down and worship the image which I have made, well and good; but if you do not worship, you shall immediately be cast into a burning fiery furnace; and who is the god that will deliver you out of my hands?"

16. Respondentes Sedrac, Misac et Abdenago dixerunt regi Nabuchodonosor: “Non oportet nos de hac re respondere tibi:

16. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed'nego answered the king, "O Nebuchadnez'zar, we have no need to answer you in this matter.

17. Si enim Deus noster, quem colimus, potest eripere nos de camino ignis ardentis, et de manu tua, rex, liberabit.

17. If it be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace; and he will deliver us out of your hand, O king.

18. Quod si noluerit, notum sit tibi, rex, quia deos tuos non colimus et statuam auream, quam erexisti, non adoramus”.

18. But if not, be it known to you, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the golden image which you have set up."

19. Tunc Nabuchodonosor repletus est furore, et aspectus faciei illius immutatus est super Sedrac, Misac et Abdenago; et respondens praecepit, ut succenderetur fornax septuplum quam succendi consueverat;

19. Then Nebuchadnez'zar was full of fury, and the expression of his face was changed against Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed'nego. He ordered the furnace heated seven times more than it was wont to be heated.

20. et viris fortissimis de exercitu suo iussit, ut ligarent Sedrac, Misac et Abdenago et mitterent eos in fornacem ignis ardentis;

20. And he ordered certain mighty men of his army to bind Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed'nego, and to cast them into the burning fiery furnace.

21. et confestim viri illi vincti, cum bracis suis et tiaris et calceamentis et vestibus missi sunt in medium fornacis ignis ardentis;

21. Then these men were bound in their mantles, their tunics, their hats, and their other garments, and they were cast into the burning fiery furnace.

22. itaque, quia iussio regis urgebat, et fornax succensa erat nimis, viros illos, qui miserant Sedrac, Misac et Abdenago, interfecit flamma ignis.

22. Because the king's order was strict and the furnace very hot, the flame of the fire slew those men who took up Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed'nego.

23. Viri autem tres, Sedrac, Misac et Abdenago, ceciderunt in medio camino ignis ardentis colligati. (Quae sequuntur in Hebraeis voluminibus non repperi).

23. And these three men, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed'nego, fell bound into the burning fiery furnace.

24. Et ambulabant in medio flammae laudantes Deum et benedicentes Domino.

24. Then King Nebuchadnez'zar was astonished and rose up in haste. He said to his counselors, "Did we not cast three men bound into the fire?" They answered the king, "True, O king."

25. Stans autem Azarias oravit sic aperiensque os suum in medio ignis ait:

25. He answered, "But I see four men loose, walking in the midst of the fire, and they are not hurt; and the appearance of the fourth is like a son of the gods."

26. “Benedictus es, Domine, Deus patrum nostrorum, et laudabilis et gloriosum nomen tuum in saecula,

26. Then Nebuchadnez'zar came near to the door of the burning fiery furnace and said, "Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed'nego, servants of the Most High God, come forth, and come here!" Then Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed'nego came out from the fire.

27. quia iustus es in omnibus, quae fecisti nobis, et universa opera tua vera, et viae tuae rectae, et omnia iudicia tua veritas.

27. And the satraps, the prefects, the governors, and the king's counselors gathered together and saw that the fire had not had any power over the bodies of those men; the hair of their heads was not singed, their mantles were not harmed, and no smell of fire had come upon them.

28. Iudicia enim vera fecisti iuxta omnia, quae induxisti super nos et super civitatem sanctam patrum nostrorum Ierusalem, quia in veritate et in iudicio induxisti omnia haec propter peccata nostra.

28. Nebuchadnez'zar said, "Blessed be the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed'nego, who has sent his angel and delivered his servants, who trusted in him, and set at nought the king's command, and yielded up their bodies rather than serve and worship any god except their own God.

29. Peccavimus enim et inique egimus recedentes a te et deliquimus in omnibus;

29. Therefore I make a decree: Any people, nation, or language that speaks anything against the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed'nego shall be torn limb from limb, and their houses laid in ruins; for there is no other god who is able to deliver in this way."

30. et praecepta tua non audivimus nec observavimus nec fecimus, sicut praeceperas nobis, ut bene nobis esset.

30. Then the king promoted Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed'nego in the province of Babylon.

31. Omnia ergo, quae induxisti super nos, et universa, quae fecisti nobis, vero iudicio fecisti;

31. Then Azariah stood and offered this prayer; in the midst of the fire he opened his mouth and said:

32. et tradidisti nos in manibus inimicorum nostrorum iniquorum et pessimorum praevaricatorumque et regi iniusto et pessimo ultra omnem terram.

32. "Blessed art thou, O Lord, God of our fathers, and worthy of praise; and thy name is glorified for ever.

33. Et nunc non possumus aperire os; confusio et opprobrium facta sunt servis tuis et his, qui colunt te.

33. For thou art just in all that thou hast done to us, and all thy works are true and thy ways right, and all thy judgments are truth.

34. Ne, quaesumus, tradas nos in perpetuum propter nomen tuum et ne dissipes testamentum tuum

34. Thou hast executed true judgments in all that thou hast brought upon us and upon Jerusalem, the holy city of our fathers, for in truth and justice thou hast brought all this upon us because of our sins.

35. neque auferas misericordiam tuam a nobis propter Abraham dilectum tuum et Isaac servum tuum et Israel sanctum tuum,

35. For we have sinfully and lawlessly departed from thee, and have sinned in all things and have not obeyed thy commandments;

36. quibus dixisti quod multiplicares semen eorum sicut stellas caeli et sicut arenam, quae est in litore maris;

36. we have not observed them or done them, as thou hast commanded us that it might go well with us.

37. quia, Domine, imminuti sumus plus quam omnes gentes sumusque humiles in universa terra hodie propter peccata nostra;

37. So all that thou hast brought upon us, and all that thou hast done to us, thou hast done in true judgment.

38. et non est in tempore hoc princeps et propheta et dux neque holocaustum neque sacrificium neque oblatio neque incensum neque locus primitiarum coram te, ut possimus invenire misericordiam;

38. Thou hast given us into the hands of lawless enemies, most hateful rebels, and to an unjust king, the most wicked in all the world.

39. sed in anima contrita et spiritu humilitatis suscipiamur sicut in holocausto arietum et taurorum

39. And now we cannot open our mouths; shame and disgrace have befallen thy servants and worshipers.

40. et sicut in milibus agnorum pinguium; sic fiat sacrificium nostrum in conspectu tuo hodie, et perfice subsequentes te, quoniam non est confusio confidentibus in te.

40. For thy name's sake do not give us up utterly, and do not break thy covenant,

41. Et nunc sequimur te in toto corde et timemus te et quaerimus faciem tuam;

41. and do not withdraw thy mercy from us, for the sake of Abraham thy beloved and for the sake of Isaac thy servant and Israel thy holy one,

42. ne confundas nos, sed fac nobiscum iuxta mansuetudinem tuam et secundum multitudinem misericordiae tuae

42. to whom thou didst promise to make their descendants as many as the stars of heaven and as the sand on the shore of the sea.

43. et erue nos in mirabilibus tuis et da gloriam nomini tuo, Domine.

43. For we, O Lord, have become fewer than any nation, and are brought low this day in all the world because of our sins.

44. Et confundantur omnes, qui ostendunt servis tuis mala; confundantur absque ulla potentia, et robur eorum conteratur.

44. And at this time there is no prince, or prophet, or leader, no burnt offering, or sacrifice, or oblation, or incense, no place to make an offering before thee or to find mercy.

45. Sciant quia tu es Dominus, Deus solus et gloriosus super orbem terrarum”.

45. Yet with a contrite heart and a humble spirit may we be accepted, as though it were with burnt offerings of rams and bulls, and with tens of thousands of fat lambs;

46. Et non cessabant, qui immiserant eos, ministri regis succendere fornacem naphta et stuppa et pice et malleolis,

46. such may our sacrifice be in thy sight this day, and may we wholly follow thee, for there will be no shame for those who trust in thee.

47. et effundebatur flamma super fornacem cubitis quadraginta novem

47. And now with all our heart we follow thee, we fear thee and seek thy face.

48. et erupit et incendit, quos repperit iuxta fornacem de Chaldaeis.

48. Do not put us to shame, but deal with us in thy forbearance and in thy abundant mercy.

49. Angelus autem Domini descendit cum Azaria et sociis eius in fornacem et excussit flammam ignis de fornace

49. Deliver us in accordance with thy marvelous works, and give glory to thy name, O Lord! Let all who do harm to thy servants be put to shame;

50. et fecit medium fornacis quasi ventum roris flantem; et non tetigit eos omnino ignis neque contristavit nec quidquam molestiae intulit.

50. let them be disgraced and deprived of all power and dominion, and let their strength be broken.

51. Tunc hi tres, quasi ex uno ore, laudabant et glorificabant et benedicebant Deo in fornace dicentes:

51. Let them know that thou art the Lord, the only God, glorious over the whole world."

52. “Benedictus es, Domine, Deus patrum nostrorum, et laudabilis et superexaltatus in saecula; et benedictum nomen gloriae tuae sanctum et superlaudabile et superexaltatum in saecula.

52. Now the king's servants who threw them in did not cease feeding the furnace fires with naphtha, pitch, tow, and brush.

53. Benedictus es in templo sanctae gloriae tuae et superlaudabilis et supergloriosus in saecula.

53. And the flame streamed out above the furnace forty-nine cubits,

54. Benedictus es in throno regni tui et superlaudabilis et superexaltatus in saecula.

54. and it broke through and burned those of the Chaldeans whom it caught about the furnace.

55. Benedictus es, qui intueris abyssos sedens super cherubim, et laudabilis et superexaltatus in saecula.

55. But the angel of the Lord came down into the furnace to be with Azariah and his companions, and drove the fiery flame out of the furnace,

56. Benedictus es in firmamento caeli et laudabilis et gloriosus in saecula.

56. and made the midst of the furnace like a moist whistling wind, so that the fire did not touch them at all or hurt or trouble them.

57. Benedicite, omnia opera Domini, Domino, laudate et superexaltate eum in saecula.

57. Then the three, as with one mouth, praised and glorified and blessed God in the furnace, saying:

58. Benedicite, caeli, Domino, laudate et superexaltate eum in saecula.

58. "Blessed art thou, O Lord, God of our fathers, and to be praised and highly exalted for ever;

59. Benedicite, angeli Domini, Domino, laudate et superexaltate eum in saecula.

59. And blessed is thy glorious, holy name and to be highly praised and highly exalted for ever;

60. Benedicite, aquae omnes, quae super caelos sunt, Domino, laudate et superexaltate eum in saecula.

60. Blessed art thou in the temple of thy holy glory and to be extolled and highly glorified for ever.

61. Benedicat omnis virtus Domino, laudate et superexaltate eum in saecula.

61. Blessed art thou, who sittest upon cherubim and lookest upon the deeps, and to be praised and highly exalted for ever.

62. Benedicite, sol et luna, Domino, laudate et superexaltate eum in saecula.

62. Blessed art thou upon the throne of thy kingdom and to be extolled and highly exalted for ever.

63. Benedicite, stellae caeli, Domino, laudate et superexaltate eum in saecula.

63. Blessed art thou in the firmament of heaven and to be sung and glorified for ever.

64. Benedicite, omnis imber et ros, Domino, laudate et superexaltate eum in saecula.

64. "Bless the Lord, all works of the Lord, sing praise to him and highly exalt him for ever.

65. Benedicite, omnes venti, Domino, laudate et superexaltate eum in saecula.

65. Bless the Lord, you heavens, sing praise to him and highly exalt him for ever.

66. Benedicite, ignis et aestus, Domino, laudate et superexaltate eum in saecula.

66. Bless the Lord, you angels of the Lord, sing praise to him and highly exalt him for ever.

67. Benedicite, frigus et aestus, Domino, laudate et superexaltate eum in saecula.

67. Bless the Lord, all waters above the heaven, sing praise to him and highly exalt him for ever.

68. Benedicite, rores et pruina, Domino, laudate et superexaltate eum in saecula.

68. Bless the Lord, all powers, sing praise to him and highly exalt him for ever.

69. Benedicite, gelu et frigus, Domino, laudate et superexaltate eum in saecula.

69. Bless the Lord, sun and moon, sing praise to him and highly exalt him for ever.

70. Benedicite, glacies et nives, Domino, laudate et superexaltate eum in saecula.

70. Bless the Lord, stars of heaven, sing praise to him and highly exalt him for ever.

71. Benedicite, noctes et dies, Domino, laudate et superexaltate eum in saecula.

71. Bless the Lord, all rain and dew, sing praise to him and highly exalt him for ever.

72. Benedicite, lux et tenebrae, Domino, laudate et superexaltate eum in saecula.

72. Bless the Lord, all winds, sing praise to him and highly exalt him for ever.

73. Benedicite, fulgura et nubes, Domino, laudate et superexaltate eum in saecula.

73. Bless the Lord, fire and heat, sing praise to him and highly exalt him for ever.

74. Benedicat terra Dominum, laudet et superexaltet eum in saecula.

74. Bless the Lord, winter cold and summer heat, sing praise to him and highly exalt him for ever.

75. Benedicite, montes et colles, Domino, laudate et superexaltate eum in saecula.

75. Bless the Lord, dews and snows, sing praise to him and highly exalt him for ever.

76. Benedicite, universa germinantia in terra, Domino, laudate et superexaltate eum in saecula.

76. Bless the Lord, nights and days, sing praise to him and highly exalt him for ever.

77. Benedicite, maria et flumina, Domino, laudate et superexaltate eum in saecula.

77. Bless the Lord, light and darkness, sing praise to him and highly exalt him for ever.

78. Benedicite, fontes, Domino, laudate et superexaltate eum in saecula.

78. Bless the Lord, ice and cold, sing praise to him and highly exalt him for ever.

79. Benedicite, cete et omnia quae moventur in aquis, Domino, laudate et superexaltate eum in saecula.

79. Bless the Lord, frosts and snows, sing praise to him and highly exalt him for ever.

80. Benedicite, omnes volucres caeli, Domino, laudate et superexaltate eum in saecula.

80. Bless the Lord, lightnings and clouds, sing praise to him and highly exalt him for ever.

81. Benedicite, omnes bestiae et pecora, Domino, laudate et superexaltate eum in saecula.

81. Let the earth bless the Lord; let it sing praise to him and highly exalt him for ever.

82. Benedicite, filii hominum, Domino, laudate et superexaltate eum in saecula.

82. Bless the Lord, mountains and hills, sing praise to him and highly exalt him for ever.

83. Benedic, Israel, Domino, laudate et superexaltate eum in saecula.

83. Bless the Lord, all things that grow on the earth, sing praise to him and highly exalt him for ever.

84. Benedicite, sacerdotes Domini, Domino, laudate et superexaltate eum in saecula.

84. Bless the Lord, you springs, sing praise to him and highly exalt him for ever.

85. Benedicite, servi Domini, Domino, laudate et superexaltate eum in saecula.

85. Bless the Lord, seas and rivers, sing praise to him and highly exalt him for ever.

86. Benedicite, spiritus et animae iustorum, Domino, laudate et superexaltate eum in saecula.

86. Bless the Lord, you whales and all creatures that move in the waters, sing praise to him and highly exalt him for ever.

87. Benedicite, sancti et humiles corde, Domino, laudate et superexaltate eum in saecula.

87. Bless the Lord, all birds of the air, sing praise to him and highly exalt him for ever.

88. Benedicite, Anania, Azaria, Misael, Domino, laudate et superexaltate eum in saecula; quia eruit nos de inferno et salvos fecit de manu mortis et liberavit nos de medio fornacis ardentis flammae et de medio ignis eruit nos.

88. Bless the Lord, all beasts and cattle, sing praise to him and highly exalt him for ever.

89. Confitemini Domino, quoniam bonus, quoniam in saeculum misericordia eius.

89. Bless the Lord, you sons of men, sing praise to him and highly exalt him for ever.

90. Benedicite, omnes, qui timetis Dominum, Deo deorum; laudate et confitemini ei, quia in saecula misericordia eius”. (Hucusque non habetur in Hebraeo et, quae posuimus, de Theodotionis editione translata sunt).

90. Bless the Lord, O Israel, sing praise to him and highly exalt him for ever.

91. (24) Tunc Nabuchodonosor rex obstupuit et surrexit propere; respondens ait optimatibus suis: “Nonne tres viros misimus in medium ignis compeditos?”. Qui respondentes dixerunt regi: “Vere, rex”.

91. Bless the Lord, you priests of the Lord, sing praise to him and highly exalt him for ever.

92. (25) Respondit et ait: “Ecce ego video viros quattuor solutos et ambulantes in medio ignis, et nihil corruptionis in eis est, et species quarti similis filio deorum”.

92. Bless the Lord, you servants of the Lord, sing praise to him and highly exalt him for ever.

93. (26) Tunc accessit Nabuchodonosor ad ostium fornacis ignis ardentis et ait: “Sedrac, Misac et Abdenago, servi Dei excelsi, egredimini et venite”. Statimque egressi sunt Sedrac, Misac et Abdenago de medio ignis.

93. Bless the Lord, spirits and souls of the righteous, sing praise to him and highly exalt him for ever.

94. (27) Et congregati satrapae, magistratus et iudices et potentes regis contemplabantur viros illos, quoniam nihil potestatis habuisset ignis in corporibus eorum, et capillus capitis eorum non esset adustus, et sarabara eorum non fuissent immutata, et odor ignis non transisset per eos.

94. Bless the Lord, you who are holy and humble in heart, sing praise to him and highly exalt him for ever.

95. (28) Et erumpens Nabuchodonosor ait: “Benedictus Deus eorum, Sedrac, Misac et Abdenago, qui misit angelum suum et eruit servos suos, qui crediderunt in eo, et verbum regis immutaverunt et tradiderunt corpora sua, ne servirent et ne adorarent omnem deum, excepto Deo suo.

95. Bless the Lord, Hananiah, Azariah, and Mishael, sing praise to him and highly exalt him for ever; for he has rescued us from Hades and saved us from the hand of death, and delivered us from the midst of the burning fiery furnace; from the midst of the fire he has delivered us.

96. (29) A me ergo positum est decretum, ut omnis populus, tribus et lingua quaecumque locuta fuerit blasphemiam contra Deum Sedrac, Misac et Abdenago, in frusta concidatur, et domus eius in sterquilinium fiat, eo quod non est Deus alius, qui possit ita salvare”.

96. Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his mercy endures for ever.

97. (30) Tunc rex promovit Sedrac, Misac et Abdenago in provincia Babylonis.

97. Bless him, all who worship the Lord, the God of gods, sing praise to him and give thanks to him, for his mercy endures for ever."

98. (31) Nabuchodonosor rex omnibus populis, gentibus et linguis, quae habitant in universa terra: “Pax vobis multiplicetur.

99. (32) Signa et mirabilia, quae fecit apud me Deus excelsus, placuit mihi praedicare:

99.

100. (33) Signa eius quam magna sunt, et mirabilia eius quam fortia! Et regnum eius regnum sempiternum, et potestas eius in generationem et generationem”.
