Liber Ieremiae, 27

1. In principio regni Sedeciae filii Iosiae regis Iudae factum est verbum istud ad Ieremiam a Domino dicens:

1. In the beginning of the reign of Zedeki'ah the son of Josi'ah, king of Judah, this word came to Jeremiah from the LORD.

2. “Haec dicit Dominus ad me: Fac tibi vincula et iuga et pones ea in collo tuo

2. Thus the LORD said to me: "Make yourself thongs and yoke-bars, and put them on your neck.

3. et mittes ea ad regem Edom et ad regem Moab et ad regem filiorum Ammon et ad regem Tyri et ad regem Sidonis in manu nuntiorum, qui venerunt Ierusalem ad Sedeciam regem Iudae;

3. Send word to the king of Edom, the king of Moab, the king of the sons of Ammon, the king of Tyre, and the king of Sidon by the hand of the envoys who have come to Jerusalem to Zedeki'ah king of Judah.

4. et praecipies eis, ut ad dominos suos loquantur: Haec dicit Dominus exercituum, Deus Israel: Haec dicetis ad dominos vestros:

4. Give them this charge for their masters: `Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: This is what you shall say to your masters:

5. Ego feci terram et hominem et iumenta, quae sunt super faciem terrae, in fortitudine mea magna et in brachio meo extento et dedi eam ei, qui placuit in oculis meis.

5. "It is I who by my great power and my outstretched arm have made the earth, with the men and animals that are on the earth, and I give it to whomever it seems right to me.

6. Et nunc itaque ego dedi omnes terras istas in manu Nabuchodonosor regis Babylonis servi mei, insuper et bestias agri dedi ei, ut serviant illi;

6. Now I have given all these lands into the hand of Nebuchadnez'zar, the king of Babylon, my servant, and I have given him also the beasts of the field to serve him.

7. et servient ei omnes gentes et filio eius et filio filii eius, donec veniat tempus terrae eius etiam ipsius; et servient ei gentes multae et reges magni.

7. All the nations shall serve him and his son and his grandson, until the time of his own land comes; then many nations and great kings shall make him their slave.

8. Gens autem et regnum, quod non servierit Nabuchodonosor regi Babylonis, et quicumque non curvaverit collum suum sub iugo regis Babylonis, in gladio et in fame et in peste visitabo super gentem illam, ait Dominus, donec consumam eos in manu eius.

8. "`"But if any nation or kingdom will not serve this Nebuchadnez'zar king of Babylon, and put its neck under the yoke of the king of Babylon, I will punish that nation with the sword, with famine, and with pestilence, says the LORD, until I have consumed it by his hand.

9. Vos ergo nolite audire prophetas vestros et divinos et somniatores et augures et maleficos, qui dicunt vobis: “Non servietis regi Babylonis”,

9. So do not listen to your prophets, your diviners, your dreamers, your soothsayers, or your sorcerers, who are saying to you, `You shall not serve the king of Babylon.'

10. quia mendacium prophetant vobis, ut longe vos faciant de terra vestra, et eiciam vos, et pereatis.

10. For it is a lie which they are prophesying to you, with the result that you will be removed far from your land, and I will drive you out, and you will perish.

11. Porro gens, quae subiecerit cervicem suam sub iugo regis Babylonis et servierit ei, dimittam eam in terra sua, dicit Dominus, et colet eam et habitabit in ea”.

11. But any nation which will bring its neck under the yoke of the king of Babylon and serve him, I will leave on its own land, to till it and dwell there, says the LORD."'"

12. Et ad Sedeciam regem Iudae locutus sum secundum omnia verba haec dicens: “Subicite colla vestra sub iugo regis Babylonis et servite ei et populo eius, et vivetis.

12. To Zedeki'ah king of Judah I spoke in like manner: "Bring your necks under the yoke of the king of Babylon, and serve him and his people, and live.

13. Quare moriemini tu et populus tuus gladio, fame et peste, sicut locutus est Dominus ad gentem, quae servire noluerit regi Babylonis?

13. Why will you and your people die by the sword, by famine, and by pestilence, as the LORD has spoken concerning any nation which will not serve the king of Babylon?

14. Nolite audire verba prophetarum dicentium vobis: “Non servietis regi Babylonis”, quia mendacium ipsi loquuntur vobis.

14. Do not listen to the words of the prophets who are saying to you, `You shall not serve the king of Babylon,' for it is a lie which they are prophesying to you.

15. Quia non misi eos, ait Dominus, et ipsi prophetant in nomine meo mendaciter, ut eiciam vos et pereatis, tam vos quam prophetae, qui vaticinantur vobis”.

15. I have not sent them, says the LORD, but they are prophesying falsely in my name, with the result that I will drive you out and you will perish, you and the prophets who are prophesying to you."

16. Et ad sacerdotes et ad populum istum locutus sum dicens: “Haec dicit Dominus: Nolite audire verba prophetarum vestrorum, qui prophetant vobis dicentes: “Ecce vasa domus Domini revertentur de Babylone nunc cito”. Mendacium enim prophetant vobis.

16. Then I spoke to the priests and to all this people, saying, "Thus says the LORD: Do not listen to the words of your prophets who are prophesying to you, saying, `Behold, the vessels of the LORD's house will now shortly be brought back from Babylon,' for it is a lie which they are prophesying to you.

17. Nolite ergo audire eos, sed servite regi Babylonis, ut vivatis. Quare datur haec civitas in solitudinem?

17. Do not listen to them; serve the king of Babylon and live. Why should this city become a desolation?

18. Et si prophetae sunt, et est verbum Domini in eis, occurrant Domino exercituum, ut non veniant vasa, quae derelicta fuerant in domo Domini et in domo regis Iudae et in Ierusalem, in Babylonem”.

18. If they are prophets, and if the word of the LORD is with them, then let them intercede with the LORD of hosts, that the vessels which are left in the house of the LORD, in the house of the king of Judah, and in Jerusalem may not go to Babylon.

19. Quia haec dicit Dominus exercituum ad columnas et ad mare et ad bases et ad reliqua vasorum, quae remanserunt in civitate hac,

19. For thus says the LORD of hosts concerning the pillars, the sea, the stands, and the rest of the vessels which are left in this city,

20. quae non tulit Nabuchodonosor rex Babylonis, cum transferret Iechoniam filium Ioachim regem Iudae de Ierusalem in Babylonem et omnes optimates Iudae et Ierusalem;

20. which Nebuchadnez'zar king of Babylon did not take away, when he took into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon Jeconi'ah the son of Jehoi'akim, king of Judah, and all the nobles of Judah and Jerusalem --

21. quia haec dicit Dominus exercituum, Deus Israel, ad vasa, quae derelicta sunt in domo Domini et in domo regis Iudae et Ierusalem:

21. thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, concerning the vessels which are left in the house of the LORD, in the house of the king of Judah, and in Jerusalem:

22. “In Babylonem transferentur et ibi erunt usque ad diem visitationis eorum, dicit Dominus; et afferri faciam ea et restitui in loco isto”.

22. They shall be carried to Babylon and remain there until the day when I give attention to them, says the LORD. Then I will bring them back and restore them to this place."
