Josué, 20

1. Yahweh parla à Josué, en disant: «Parle auxenfants d'Israël et dis-leur:

2. Désignez-vous, comme je vous l'ai ordonné parMoïse, des villes de refuge

2. "Tell the Israelites to designate the cities of which I spoke to them through Moses,

3. où pourra s'enfuir le meurtrier qui aura tuéquelqu'un par erreur, sans le savoir, et elles vous serviront derefuge contre le vengeur du sang.

3. to which one guilty of accidental and unintended homicide may flee for asylum from the avenger of blood.

4. Le meurtrier s'enfuira vers une de ces villes; ils'arrêtera à l'entrée de la porte de laville, et exposera son cas aux anciens de cette ville; ceux-ci lerecueilleront auprès d'eux dans la ville, et lui donnerontune demeure pour qu'il habite avec eux.

4. To one of these cities the killer shall flee, and standing at the entrance of the city gate, he shall plead his case before the elders, who must receive him and assign him a place in which to live among them.

5. Si le vengeur du sang le poursuit, ils ne livreront point lemeurtrier entre ses mains, car c'est sans le savoir qu'il atué son prochain, qu'il ne haïssait pasauparavant.

5. Though the avenger of blood pursues him, they are not to deliver up the homicide who slew his fellow man unintentionally and not out of previous hatred.

6. Le meurtrier restera dans cette ville jusqu'à ce qu'ilcomparaisse devant l'assemblée pour êtrejugé, jusqu'à la mort du grand prêtre quisera en fonctions en ces jours-là. Alors le meurtrier s'enretournera et rentrera dans sa ville et dans sa maison, dans laville d'où il s'était enfui.

6. Once he has stood judgment before the community, he shall live on in that city till the death of the high priest who is in office at the time. Then the killer may go back home to his own city from which he fled."

7. Ils consacrèrent Cédès en Gallilée,dans la montagne de Nephthali; Sichem, dans la montagned'Ephraïm, et Cariath-Arbé, qui est Hébron,dans la montagne de Juda.

7. So they set apart Kedesh in Galilee in the mountain region of Naphtali, Shechem in the mountain region of Ephraim, and Kiriath-arba (that is, Hebron) in the mountain region of Judah.

8. De l'autre côté du Jourdain, vis-à-vis deJéricho, à l'orient, ils désignèrentBosor, dans le désert, dans la plaine, ville de la tribude Ruben; Ramoth en Galaad, de la tribu de Gad, et Gaulon enBasan, de la tribu de Manassé.

8. And beyond the Jordan east of Jericho they designated Bezer on the open tableland in the tribe of Reuben, Ramoth in Gilead in the tribe of Gad, and Golan in Bashan in the tribe of Manasseh.

9. Telles furent les villes assignées à tous lesenfants d'Israël et à l'étranger quiséjourne au milieu d'eux, afin que quiconque auraittué quelqu'un par erreur pût s'y réfugier, etqu'il ne mourût pas de la main du vengeur du sang, avantd'avoir comparu devant l'assemblée.

9. These were the designated cities to which any Israelite or stranger living among them who had killed a person accidentally might flee to escape death at the hand of the avenger of blood, until he could appear before the community.
