Jéremie, 20

1. Le prêtre Phassur, fils d'Emmer, était surveillant en chef de la mai-son de Yahweh, entendit Jérémie pro-noncer ces prophéties;

1. Jeremiah was heard prophesying these things by the priest Pashhur, son of Immer, chief officer in the house of the LORD.

2. et Phassur frap-pa Jérémie le prophète et le fit mettre aux ceps dans la porte haute de Benja-min, qui est dans la maison de Yahweh. Le lendemain Phassur fit sortir Jéré-mie des ceps,

2. So he had the prophet scourged and placed in the stocks at the upper Gate of Benjamin in the house of the LORD.

3. et Jérémie .lui dit: Ce n'est plus Phassur que Yahweh t'ap-pelle, mais Magor-Missabib.

3. The next morning, after Pashhur had released Jeremiah from the stocks, the prophet said to him: Instead of Pashhur, the LORD will name you "Terror on every side."

4. Car ainsi parle Yahweh: Je ferai de toi un objet de terreur Pour toi-même et pour tous tes amis; Ils tomberont sous l'épée de leurs ennemis, Et tes yeux le verront; Je livrerai aussi tout Juda aux mains du roi de Babylone, Qui les emmènera captifs à Babylone Et les frappera de l'épée.

4. For thus says the LORD: Indeed, I will deliver you to terror, you and all your friends. Your own eyes shall see them fall by the sword of their enemies. All Judah I will deliver to the king of Babylon, who shall take them captive to Babylon or slay them with the sword.

5. Je livrerai toutes les richesses de cette ville, Tous ses produits, tous ses objets précieux Et tous les trésors des rois de Juda, Je les livrerai aux mains de leurs ennemis, Et ils les pilleront, les enlèveront, Et les emmèneront à Babylone.

5. All the wealth of this city, all it has toiled for and holds dear, all the treasures of the kings of Judah, I will give as plunder into the hands of their foes, who shall seize it and carry it away to Babylon.

6. Et toi, Phassur, et tous ceux qui habitent dans ta maison, Vous irez ,en captivité; Tu iras à Babylone, et là, tu mourras, là tu seras enterré, Toi et tous tes amis auxquels tu as prophétisé le mensonge.

6. You Pashhur, and all the members of your household shall go into exile. To Babylon you shall go, you and all your friends; there you shall die and be buried, because you have prophesied lies to them.

7. Tu m'as séduit, Yahweh, et j'ai été séduit; Tu m'as saisi et tu m'as vaincu. Je suis chaque jour un objet de risée; Tous se moquent de moi.

7. You duped me, O LORD, and I let myself be duped; you were too strong for me, and you triumphed. All the day I am an object of laughter; everyone mocks me.

8. Chaque fois que je parle, je crie violence, J'annonce la dévastation, Et la parole de Yahweh est pour moi chaque jour Une cause d'humiliation et de risée.

8. Whenever I speak, I must cry out, violence and outrage is my message; The word of the LORD has brought me derision and reproach all the day.

9. Quand je disais: "Je ne ferai plus mention de lui, Je ne parlerai plus en son nom," Il y avait dans mon c?ur comme un feu dévorant, Enfermé dans mes os; Je m'efforçais de le contenir, et je n'ai pas pu.

9. I say to myself, I will not mention him, I will speak in his name no more. But then it becomes like fire burning in my heart, imprisoned in my bones; I grow weary holding it in, I cannot endure it.

10. Car j'entendais les propos de la foule; La terreur m'environnait! "Dénoncez, allons le dénoncer!" L'homme avec qui j'étais en paix épie mes pas: "S'il se laisse surprendre, nous le tiendrons Et nous tirerons vengeance de lui."

10. Yes, I hear the whisperings of many: "Terror on every side! Denounce! let us denounce him!" All those who were my friends are on the watch for any misstep of mine. "Perhaps he will be trapped; then we can prevail, and take our vengeance on him."

11. Mais Yahweh est avec moi comme un héros puissant; C'est pourquoi mes persécuteurs s'affaisseront Et n'auront pas le dessus; Parce qu'ils n'ont pas agi sagement, Ils seront confondus d'un opprobre éternel, Qui ne sera pas oublié.

11. But the LORD is with me, like a mighty champion: my persecutors will stumble, they will not triumph. In their failure they will be put to utter shame, to lasting, unforgettable confusion.

12. Yahweh des armées éprouve le juste; Il voit les reins et les c?urs; Je verrai la vengeance que tu tireras d'eux, Car c'est à toi que j'ai remis ma cause.

12. O LORD of hosts, you who test the just, who probe mind and heart, Let me witness the vengeance you take on them, for to you I have entrusted my cause.

13. Chantez à Yahweh, louez Yahweh, Car il a tiré de la main des méchants l'âme du malheureux.

13. Sing to the LORD, praise the LORD, For he has rescued the life of the poor from the power of the wicked!

14. Maudit soit le jour où je suis né! Que le jour où ma mère m'a enfanté ne soit pas béni!

14. Cursed be the day on which I was born! May the day my mother gave me birth never be blessed!

15. Maudit soit l'homme qui porta la nouvelle à mon père, En lui disant: "Un fils t'est né," Et qui le combla de joie!

15. Cursed be the man who brought the news to my father, saying, "A child, a son, has been born to you!" filling him with great joy.

16. Que cet homme soit comme les villes Que Yahweh a renversées sans s'en repentir! Qu'il entende le matin le cri des vaincus Et à midi les vociférations des vainqueurs,

16. Let that man be like the cities which the LORD relentlessly overthrew; Let him hear war cries in the morning, battle alarms at noonday,

17. Parce qu'il ne m'a pas tué dès le sein maternel, Afin que ma mère fût mon tombeau, Ou que son sein m'eût gardé éternellement. Pourquoi suis-je sorti de ses entrailles Pour voir la peine et la douleur, Et pour consumer mes jours dans l'ignominie?

17. because he did not dispatch me in the womb! Then my mother would have been my grave, her womb confining me forever.

18. Why did I come forth from the womb, to see sorrow and pain, to end my days in shame?
