Hébreux, 11

1. Or la foi est la substance des choses qu'on espère, une conviction de celles qu'on ne voit point.

1. Faith is the realization of what is hoped for and evidence of things not seen.

2. C'est pour l'avoir possédée que les anciens ont obtenu un bon témoignage.

2. Because of it the ancients were well attested.

3. C'est par la foi que nous reconnaissons que le monde a été formé par la parole de Dieu, en sorte que les choses que l'on voit n'ont pas été faites de choses visibles.

3. By faith we understand that the universe was ordered by the word of God, so that what is visible came into being through the invisible.

4. C'est par la foi qu'Abel offrit à Dieu un sacrifice plus excellent que celui de Caïn; c'est par elle qu'il fut déclaré juste, Dieu approuvant ses offrandes, et c'est par elle que, mort, il parle toujours.

4. By faith Abel offered to God a sacrifice greater than Cain's. Through this he was attested to be righteous, God bearing witness to his gifts, and through this, though dead, he still speaks.

5. C'est par la foi qu'Enoch fut enlevé sans qu'il eût subi la mort : "on ne le trouva plus, parce que Dieu l'avait enlevé"; car avant cet enlèvement, il avait reçu ce témoignage ' qu'il avait plu à Dieu.

5. By faith Enoch was taken up so that he should not see death, and "he was found no more because God had taken him." Before he was taken up, he was attested to have pleased God.

6. or, sans la foi, il est impossible de plaire à Dieu ; car il faut que celui qui s'approche de Dieu croie qu'il existe, et qu'il est le rémunérateur de ceux qui le cherchent.

6. But without faith it is impossible to please him, for anyone who approaches God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.

7. C'est par la foi que Noé, divinement averti des événements qu'on ne voyait pas encore, construisit, avec une pieuse crainte, une arche pour sauver sa fa-mille; c'est par elle qu'il condamna le monde, et devint héritier de la justice qui s'obtient par la foi.

7. By faith Noah, warned about what was not yet seen, with reverence built an ark for the salvation of his household. Through this he condemned the world and inherited the righteousness that comes through faith.

8. C'est par la foi qu'Abraham, obéissant à l'appel de Dieu, partit pour un pays qu'il devait recevoir en héritage, et se mit en chemin sans savoir où il allait.

8. By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to a place that he was to receive as an inheritance; he went out, not knowing where he was to go.

9. C'est par la foi qu'il séjourna dans la terre promise, comme dans une terre étrangère, habitant sous des tentes, ainsi qu'Isaac et Jacob, héritiers comme lui de la même promesse.

9. By faith he sojourned in the promised land as in a foreign country, dwelling in tents with Isaac and Jacob, heirs of the same promise;

10. Car il attendait la cité aux solides fondements, dont Dieu est l'architecte et le constructeur.

10. for he was looking forward to the city with foundations, whose architect and maker is God.

11. C'est par la foi que Sara, elle aussi, qui n'était plus dans l'âge de concevoir, en reçut la vertu, parce qu'elle crut à la fidé-lité de Celui qui en avait fait la promesse.

11. By faith he received power to generate, even though he was past the normal age--and Sarah herself was sterile--for he thought that the one who had made the promise was trustworthy.

12. C'est pourquoi, d'un seul homme, déjà comme mort, sortit une postérité aussi nombreuse que les étoiles du ciel, et que les grains de sable innombrables qui sont sur le bord de la mer.

12. So it was that there came forth from one man, himself as good as dead, descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as countless as the sands on the seashore.

13. C'est dans la foi que ces patriarches sont tous morts, sans avoir reçu l'effet des promesses; mais ils l'ont vu et salué de loin, confessant " qu'ils étaient étrangers et voyageurs sur la terre. "

13. All these died in faith. They did not receive what had been promised but saw it and greeted it from afar and acknowledged themselves to be strangers and aliens on earth,

14. Ceux qui parlent ainsi montrent bien qu'ils cherchent une patrie.

14. for those who speak thus show that they are seeking a homeland.

15. Et certes, s'ils avaient entendu par là celle d'où ils étaient sortis, ils auraient eu le moyen d'y retourner.

15. If they had been thinking of the land from which they had come, they would have had opportunity to return.

16. Mais c'est à une patrie meilleure, à la patrie du ciel, que ten-dent leurs aspirations. C'est pourquoi Dieu n'a pas honte de s'appeler " leur Dieu ", car il leur a préparé une cité.

16. But now they desire a better homeland, a heavenly one. Therefore, God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them.

17. C'est par la foi qu'Abraham mis à l'épreuve, offrit Isaac en sacrifice.

17. By faith Abraham, when put to the test, offered up Isaac, and he who had received the promises was ready to offer his only son,

18. Ainsi celui qui avait reçu les promesses, et à qui il avait été dit : " C'est d'Isaac que naîtra ta postérité ", offrit ce fils unique,

18. of whom it was said, "Through Isaac descendants shall bear your name."

19. estimant que Dieu est assez puissant pour ressusciter même les morts; aussi le recouvra-t-il comme en figure.

19. He reasoned that God was able to raise even from the dead, and he received Isaac back as a symbol.

20. C'est par la foi qu'Isaac bénit Jacob et Esaü, en vue des choses à venir.

20. By faith regarding things still to come Isaac blessed Jacob and Esau.

21. C'est par la foi que Jacob mourant bénit chacun des fils de Joseph et qu'il se prosterna appuyé sur le sommet de son sceptre ".

21. By faith Jacob, when dying, blessed each of the sons of Joseph and "bowed in worship, leaning on the top of his staff."

22. C'est par la foi que Joseph; prés de sa fin, fit mention de la sortie des fils d'Israël, et qu'il donna des ordres au sujet de ses restes.

22. By faith Joseph, near the end of his life, spoke of the Exodus of the Israelites and gave instructions about his bones.

23. C'est par la foi que Moise à sa naissance, fut caché pendant trois mois par ses parents, parce qu'ils virent que l'en-fant était beau, et qu'ils ne craignirent pas l'édit du roi.

23. By faith Moses was hidden by his parents for three months after his birth, because they saw that he was a beautiful child, and they were not afraid of the king's edict.

24. C'est par Ia foi que Moise, devenu grand, renonça au titre de fils de la fille de Pharaon,

24. By faith Moses, when he had grown up, refused to be known as the son of Pharaoh's daughter;

25. aimant mieux d'être maltraité avec le peuple de Dieu, que de jouir des délices passagères du péché :

25. he chose to be ill-treated along with the people of God rather than enjoy the fleeting pleasure of sin.

26. il considéra l'opprobre du Christ comme une richesse plus grande que les trésors de l'Egypte; car il avait les yeux fixés sur la récompense.

26. He considered the reproach of the Anointed greater wealth than the treasures of Egypt, for he was looking to the recompense.

27. C'est par la foi qu'il quitta l'Egypte, sans redouter la colère du roi; car il tint ferme, comme s'il voyait celui qui est invisible.

27. By faith he left Egypt, not fearing the king's fury, for he persevered as if seeing the one who is invisible.

28. C'est par la foi qu'il célébra la Pâque et fit l'aspersion du sang, afin que l'exterminateur des premiers--nés ne touchât pas à ceux des Israélites.

28. By faith he kept the Passover and sprinkled the blood, that the Destroyer of the firstborn might not touch them.

29. C'est par la foi qu'ils passèrent la mer Rouge comme une terre ferme, tan-dis que les Egyptiens qui tentèrent le passage furent engloutis.

29. By faith they crossed the Red Sea as if it were dry land, but when the Egyptians attempted it they were drowned.

30. C'est par la foi que les murailles de Jéricho tombèrent, après qu'on en eût fait le tour pen-dent sept jours.

30. By faith the walls of Jericho fell after being encircled for seven days.

31. C'est par la foi que Rahab la courtisane ne périt pas avec les rebelles, pour avoir donné aux espions une sûre hospitalité.

31. By faith Rahab the harlot did not perish with the disobedient, for she had received the spies in peace.

32. Et que dirai-je encore? Le temps me manquerait si je voulais parler aussi de Gédéon, de Barac, de Samson, de Jephté, de David, de Samuel et des prophètes

32. What more shall I say? I have not time to tell of Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, of David and Samuel and the prophets,

33. par la foi, ils ont conquis des royaumes, exercé la justice, obtenu l'effet des promesses, fermé la gueule des lions,

33. who by faith conquered kingdoms, did what was righteous, obtained the promises; they closed the mouths of lions,

34. éteint la violence du feu, échappé au tranchant de l'épée, triomphé de la ma-ladie, déployé leur vaillance à la guerre, mis en fuite des armées ennemis;

34. put out raging fires, escaped the devouring sword; out of weakness they were made powerful, became strong in battle, and turned back foreign invaders.

35. par eux des femmes ont recouvré leurs morts ressuscités. Les uns ont péri dans les tortures, refusant la délivrance afin d'obtenir une meilleure résurrection ;

35. Women received back their dead through resurrection. Some were tortured and would not accept deliverance, in order to obtain a better resurrection.

36. d'autres ont souffert les moqueries et les verges ; de plus, les chaînes et les cachots ;

36. Others endured mockery, scourging, even chains and imprisonment.

37. ils ont été lapidés, sciés, éprouvés; ils sont morts par le tranchant de l'épée; ils ont erré çà et là, couverts de peaux de brebis et de chèvres, dénués de tout, persécutés, maltraités,

37. They were stoned, sawed in two, put to death at sword's point; they went about in skins of sheep or goats, needy, afflicted, tormented.

38. - eux dont le monde n'était pas digne; - Ils ont été errants dans les déserts et les montagnes, dans les cavernes et dans les antres de la terre.

38. The world was not worthy of them. They wandered about in deserts and on mountains, in caves and in crevices in the earth.

39. Cependant eux tous que leur foi a rendus recommandables, n'ont pas obtenu l'objet de la promesse

39. Yet all these, though approved because of their faith, did not receive what had been promised.

40. parce que Dieu nous a fait une condition meilleure pour qu'ils n'obtinssent pas sans nous la perfection du bonheur.

40. God had foreseen something better for us, so that without us they should not be made perfect.
