1 Maccabees, 3

37. So the king took the half of the army that remained, and went forth from Antioch the chief city of his kingdom, in the hundred and forty-seventh year: and he passed over the river Euphrates, and went through the higher countries.

1 Maccabees 3 narrates Judas Macabeu's first victories against the Greek forces, who tried to impose their culture and religion on the Jewish people. The chapter describes the Judas Army organization and its battle strategies. Next are five verses related to the topics addressed in 1 Maccabees 3:

Deuteronomy 20:4: "For the Lord, your God, will accompany you and fight for you against your enemies to give you victory." This verse talks about divine aid in the struggle against enemies and shows the importance of faith in God in times of war.
