2 Samuel, 3

21. Then Abner said to David, "I will now go and assemble all Israel for my master the king, that they may enter into an agreement with you, and that you may reign over all those you want to rule."

Chapter 3 of 2 Samuel describes the long struggle between Saul's house and David's house for Israel's control. Abner, the commander of Saul's army, refuses to submit to David after Saul's death, and chooses a new king to Israel, Is-Boste, son of Saul. However, the war between the two houses continues, and Abner is eventually killed by Joab, the commander of the Army of David.
