Jeremiah, 2

23. How can you say: ‘I have not been polluted. I have not walked after Baal?’ Consider your ways in the steep valley. Acknowledge what you have done, so that you may be like a swift runner, following his course.

Jeremiah 2 begins with the prophet rebuking the people of Israel to abandon God and follow after other gods. He makes an analogy between Israel's love for other gods and prostitution, describing how Israel abandoned his faithfulness to God and prostituted himself with idols of wood and stone. Deuteronomy 32:15: "But Jesurum gained and gave me2 (fat, thickened, and covered you with fat); and left God who did, and despised the rock of his salvation." The people of Israel have become complacent and satisfied with their material prosperity, forgetting God and despising His salvation.

Psalm 106:19-21: "They made a calf in Horeb, and worshiped the cast image. Thus they exchanged their glory by the figure of an ox that eats herb. They forgot God, his Savior, who had done great things in Egypt.
