16. But the Syrians, seeing that they had fallen before Israel, sent messengers, and they brought the Syrians who were across the river. And Shophach, the leader of the military of Hadadezer, was their commander.

1 Chronicles 19 tells the history of war between David and the Ammonites. The chapter begins with David showing goodness to Hanum, son of the ammonite king, but Hanum insults him and humiliates him, which leads to war between the two peoples. David sends his generals to fight the Ammonites, and the battle unfolds. Here are five verses related to the topics addressed in 1 Chronicles 19:

Deuteronomy 20:4 - "For the Lord, your God, is what goes with you, to fight against your enemies to save you." This verse shows that David knew that God was with him in the battle against the Ammonites, and that gave him confidence to fight.
