Eclesiastes, 6

1. Vi um mal debaixo do sol, que calca pesadamente o homem.

1. There is also another evil, which I have seen under the sun, and that frequent among men:

2. Isto é, um homem a quem Deus deu sorte, riquezas e honras, e nada que possa desejar lhe falta, mas Deus não lhe concede o gozo, reservando-o a um estrangeiro. Isso é fugalidade e dor.

2. A man to whom God hath given riches, and substance, and honour, and his soul wanteth nothing of all that he desireth: yet God doth not give him power to eat thereof, but a stranger shall eat it up. This is vanity and a great misery.

3. Um homem, embora crie cem filhos, viva muitos anos, durando longamente os dias de sua vida, se não puder fartar-se de seus bens e não tiver tido sepultura, eu diria que um aborto lhe seria preferível.

3. If a man beget a hundred children, and live many years, and attain to a great age, and his soul make no use of the goods of his substance, and he be without burial: of this man I pronounce, that the untimely born is better than he.

4. Porque é em vão o fato de o aborto ter vindo e ido para as trevas. Seu nome permanecerá na obscuridade.

4. For he came in vain, and goeth to darkness, and his name shall be wholly forgotten.

5. Não terá visto nem conhecido o sol. Me­lhor é a sua sorte que a deste homem.*

5. He hath not seen the sun, nor known the distance of good and evil:

6. E, mesmo que alguém vivesse duas vezes mil anos, sem provar a felicidade, não vão todos para o mesmo lugar?*

6. Although he lived two thousand years, and hath not enjoyed good things: do not all make haste to one place?

7. Todo o trabalho do homem é para a sua boca, mas seus desejos nunca estão satisfeitos.

7. All the labour of man is for his mouth, but his soul shall not be filled.

8. Que superioridade tem o sábio sobre o louco? Que vantagem há para o pobre saber se conduzir na vida?

8. What hath the wise man more than the fool? and what the poor man, but to go thither, where there is life?

9. Mais vale o que veem os olhos do que a agitação dos desejos. Isso é ainda fugalidade e vento que passa.

9. Better it is to see what thou mayst desire, than to desire that which thou canst not know. But this also is vanity, and presumption of spirit.

10. A tudo o que existe, desde há muito, foi dado um nome, e sabe-se também o que é o homem: é incapaz de disputar com alguém mais forte do que ele.

10. He that shall be, his name is already called: and it is known, that he is man, and cannot contend in judgment with him that is stronger than himself.

11. Muitas palavras só aumentam a fugalidade. De tudo isso, qual é o proveito para o homem?

11. There are many words that have much vanity in disputing.

12. Pois, quem pode saber o que é bom para o homem na vida, durante os dias de sua vã existência, que ele atravessa como uma sombra? Quem poderá dizer ao homem o que acontecerá depois dele debaixo do sol?
