1. It is for you, then, to preach the behaviour which goes with healthy doctrine.

1. But as for you, teach what befits sound doctrine.

2. Older men should be reserved, dignified, moderate, sound in faith and love and perseverance.

2. Bid the older men be temperate, serious, sensible, sound in faith, in love, and in steadfastness.

3. Similarly, older women should behave as befits religious people, with no scandal-mongering and no addiction to wine -- they must be the teachers of right behaviour

3. Bid the older women likewise to be reverent in behavior, not to be slanderers or slaves to drink; they are to teach what is good,

4. and show younger women how they should love their husbands and love their children,

4. and so train the young women to love their husbands and children,

5. how they must be sensible and chaste, and how to work in their homes, and be gentle, and obey their husbands, so that the message of God is not disgraced.

5. to be sensible, chaste, domestic, kind, and submissive to their husbands, that the word of God may not be discredited.

6. Similarly, urge younger men to be moderate in everything that they do,

6. Likewise urge the younger men to control themselves.

7. and you yourself set an example of good works, by sincerity and earnestness, when you are teaching, and by a message sound and irreproachable

7. Show yourself in all respects a model of good deeds, and in your teaching show integrity, gravity,

8. so that any opponent will be at a loss, with no accusation to make against us.

8. and sound speech that cannot be censured, so that an opponent may be put to shame, having nothing evil to say of us.

9. Slaves must be obedient to their masters in everything, and do what is wanted without argument;

9. Bid slaves to be submissive to their masters and to give satisfaction in every respect; they are not to be refractory,

10. and there must be no pilfering -- they must show complete honesty at all times, so that they are in every way a credit to the teaching of God our Saviour.

10. nor to pilfer, but to show entire and true fidelity, so that in everything they may adorn the doctrine of God our Savior.

11. You see, God's grace has been revealed to save the whole human race;

11. For the grace of God has appeared for the salvation of all men,

12. it has taught us that we should give up everything contrary to true religion and all our worldly passions; we must be self-restrained and live upright and religious lives in this present world,

12. training us to renounce irreligion and worldly passions, and to live sober, upright, and godly lives in this world,

13. waiting in hope for the blessing which will come with the appearing of the glory of our great God and Saviour Christ Jesus.

13. awaiting our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ,

14. He offered himself for us in order to ransom us from all our faults and to purify a people to be his very own and eager to do good.

14. who gave himself for us to redeem us from all iniquity and to purify for himself a people of his own who are zealous for good deeds.

15. This is what you must say, encouraging or arguing with full authority; no one should despise you.

15. Declare these things; exhort and reprove with all authority. Let no one disregard you.
