Genesis, 2

1. Thus heaven and earth were completed with all their array.

1. So wurden Himmel und Erde vollendet und ihr ganzes Gefüge.

2. On the seventh day God had completed the work he had been doing. He rested on the seventh day after all the work he had been doing.

2. Am siebten Tag vollendete Gott das Werk, das er geschaffen hatte, und er ruhte am siebten Tag, nachdem er sein ganzes Werk vollbracht hatte.

3. God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on that day he rested after all his work of creating.

3. Und Gott segnete den siebten Tag und erklärte ihn für heilig; denn an ihm ruhte Gott, nachdem er das ganze Werk der Schöpfung vollendet hatte.

4. Such was the story of heaven and earth as they were created. At the time when Yahweh God made earth and heaven

4. Das ist die Entstehungsgeschichte von Himmel und Erde, als sie erschaffen wurden. Zur Zeit, als Gott, der Herr, Erde und Himmel machte,

5. there was as yet no wild bush on the earth nor had any wild plant yet sprung up, for Yahweh God had not sent rain on the earth, nor was there any man to till the soil.

5. gab es auf der Erde noch keine Feldsträucher und wuchsen noch keine Feldpflanzen; denn Gott, der Herr, hatte es auf die Erde noch nicht regnen lassen und es gab noch keinen Menschen, der den Ackerboden bestellte;

6. Instead, water flowed out of the ground and watered all the surface of the soil.

6. aber Feuchtigkeit stieg aus der Erde auf und tränkte die ganze Fläche des Ackerbodens.

7. Yahweh God shaped man from the soil of the ground and blew the breath of life into his nostrils, and man became a living being.

7. Da formte Gott, der Herr, den Menschen aus Erde vom Ackerboden und blies in seine Nase den Lebensatem. So wurde der Mensch zu einem lebendigen Wesen.

8. Yahweh God planted a garden in Eden, which is in the east, and there he put the man he had fashioned.

8. Dann legte Gott, der Herr, in Eden, im Osten, einen Garten an und setzte dorthin den Menschen, den er geformt hatte.

9. From the soil, Yahweh God caused to grow every kind of tree, enticing to look at and good to eat, with the tree of life in the middle of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

9. Gott, der Herr, ließ aus dem Ackerboden allerlei Bäume wachsen, verlockend anzusehen und mit köstlichen Früchten, in der Mitte des Gartens aber den Baum des Lebens und den Baum der Erkenntnis von Gut und Böse.

10. A river flowed from Eden to water the garden, and from there it divided to make four streams.

10. Ein Strom entspringt in Eden, der den Garten bewässert; dort teilt er sich und wird zu vier Hauptflüssen.

11. The first is named the Pishon, and this winds all through the land of Havilah where there is gold.

11. Der eine heißt Pischon; er ist es, der das ganze Land Hawila umfließt, wo es Gold gibt.

12. The gold of this country is pure; bdellium and cornelian stone are found there.

12. Das Gold jenes Landes ist gut; dort gibt es auch Bdelliumharz und Karneolsteine.

13. The second river is named the Gihon, and this winds all through the land of Cush.

13. Der zweite Strom heißt Gihon; er ist es, der das ganze Land Kusch umfließt.

14. The third river is named the Tigris, and this flows to the east of Ashur. The fourth river is the Euphrates.

14. Der dritte Strom heißt Tigris; er ist es, der östlich an Assur vorbeifließt. Der vierte Strom ist der Eufrat.

15. Yahweh God took the man and settled him in the garden of Eden to cultivate and take care of it.

15. Gott, der Herr, nahm also den Menschen und setzte ihn in den Garten von Eden, damit er ihn bebaue und hüte.

16. Then Yahweh God gave the man this command, 'You are free to eat of all the trees in the garden.

16. Dann gebot Gott, der Herr, dem Menschen: Von allen Bäumen des Gartens darfst du essen,

17. But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you are not to eat; for, the day you eat of that, you are doomed to die.'

17. doch vom Baum der Erkenntnis von Gut und Böse darfst du nicht essen; denn sobald du davon isst, wirst du sterben.

18. Yahweh God said, 'It is not right that the man should be alone. I shall make him a helper.'

18. Dann sprach Gott, der Herr: Es ist nicht gut, dass der Mensch allein bleibt. Ich will ihm eine Hilfe machen, die ihm entspricht.

19. So from the soil Yahweh God fashioned all the wild animals and all the birds of heaven. These he brought to the man to see what he would call them; each one was to bear the name the man would give it.

19. Gott, der Herr, formte aus dem Ackerboden alle Tiere des Feldes und alle Vögel des Himmels und führte sie dem Menschen zu, um zu sehen, wie er sie benennen würde. Und wie der Mensch jedes lebendige Wesen benannte, so sollte es heißen.

20. The man gave names to all the cattle, all the birds of heaven and all the wild animals. But no helper suitable for the man was found for him.

20. Der Mensch gab Namen allem Vieh, den Vögeln des Himmels und allen Tieren des Feldes. Aber eine Hilfe, die dem Menschen entsprach, fand er nicht.

21. Then, Yahweh God made the man fall into a deep sleep. And, while he was asleep, he took one of his ribs and closed the flesh up again forthwith.

21. Da ließ Gott, der Herr, einen tiefen Schlaf auf den Menschen fallen, sodass er einschlief, nahm eine seiner Rippen und verschloss ihre Stelle mit Fleisch.

22. Yahweh God fashioned the rib he had taken from the man into a woman, and brought her to the man.

22. Gott, der Herr, baute aus der Rippe, die er vom Menschen genommen hatte, eine Frau und führte sie dem Menschen zu.

23. And the man said: This one at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh! She is to be called Woman, because she was taken from Man.

23. Und der Mensch sprach: Das endlich ist Bein von meinem Bein / und Fleisch von meinem Fleisch. / Frau soll sie heißen, / denn vom Mann ist sie genommen.

24. This is why a man leaves his father and mother and becomes attached to his wife, and they become one flesh.

24. Darum verlässt der Mann Vater und Mutter und bindet sich an seine Frau und sie werden ein Fleisch.

25. Now, both of them were naked, the man and his wife, but they felt no shame before each other.

25. Beide, Adam und seine Frau, waren nackt, aber sie schämten sich nicht voreinander.
