2 Samuel, 18

1. David reviewed the troops who were with him and appointed commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds to lead them.

1. Dann musterte David die Leute, die bei ihm waren, und setzte Anführer ein über die einzelnen Tausendschaften und Hundertschaften.

2. David divided the army into three groups, one under the command of Joab, another under the command of Abishai son of Zeruiah and brother of Joab, and the third under the command of Ittai the Gittite. David then said to the troops, 'I shall take the field in person with you.'

2. Dann ließ er seine Leute ausrücken, ein Drittel (von ihnen) unter Joab, ein Drittel unter Abischai, dem Sohn der Zeruja und Bruder Joabs, und ein Drittel unter dem Gatiter Ittai. Der König sagte zu seinen Leuten: Auch ich will mit euch in den Kampf ziehen.

3. But the troops replied, 'You are not to take the field. No one will bother about us if we run away, they will not even bother about us if half of us are killed, but you are ten thousand times more valuable. So it is better if you stay inside the town, in case we need reinforcements.'

3. Doch sie erwiderten: Du sollst nicht mit uns in den Kampf ziehen; denn wenn wir fliehen, wird man sich um uns nicht kümmern; und wenn die Hälfte von uns stirbt, wird man sich um uns nicht kümmern. Doch du giltst so viel wie zehntausend von uns und außerdem wäre es besser, wenn du uns von der Stadt aus zu Hilfe kommen könntest.

4. David said, 'I will do what you think best.' And the king stood beside the gate as the troops marched out by their hundreds and their thousands.

4. Der König antwortete ihnen: Ich will tun, was ihr für richtig haltet. Darauf stellte sich der König neben das Tor (der Stadt) und die Leute zogen nach Hundertschaften und Tausendschaften geordnet hinaus.

5. The king gave orders to Joab, Abishai and Ittai, 'For my sake, treat young Absalom gently!' And the troops all heard the king give all the commanders these orders about Absalom.

5. Und der König befahl Joab, Abischai und Ittai: Geht mir mit dem Jungen, mit Abschalom, schonend um! Alle Leute hörten, wie der König seinen Anführern wegen Abschalom diese Anweisung gab.

6. So the troops marched out into the open to engage Israel, and the battle took place in the Forest of Ephraim.

6. Die Leute zogen ins Feld, den Israeliten entgegen, und im Wald Efraim kam es zur Schlacht.

7. There, the army of Israel was beaten by David's retainers; it was a great defeat that day, with twenty thousand casualties.

7. Die Israeliten wurden von den Leuten Davids geschlagen und erlitten eine schwere Niederlage; an jenem Tag fielen zwanzigtausend von ihnen.

8. The fighting spread throughout the region and that day the forest claimed more victims than the sword.

8. Der Kampf breitete sich über die ganze dortige Gegend aus und der Wald verschlang an jenem Tag mehr Krieger als das Schwert.

9. Absalom happened to run into some of David's guards. Absalom was riding his mule and the mule passed under the thick branches of a great oak. Absalom's head got caught in the oak and he was left hanging between heaven and earth, while the mule he was riding went on.

9. Plötzlich kam Abschalom in das Blickfeld der Krieger Davids; er ritt auf einem Maultier. Als das Maultier unter den Ästen einer großen Eiche hindurchlief, blieb Abschalom mit dem Kopf fest an der Eiche hängen, sodass er zwischen Himmel und Erde schwebte und das Maultier unter ihm weglief.

10. Someone saw this and reported to Joab, 'I have just seen Absalom hanging from an oak.'

10. Jemand sah es und meldete Joab: Ich habe gerade Abschalom an einer Eiche hängen sehen.

11. Joab said to the man who had informed him, 'If you saw him, why did you not strike him to the ground then and there? I would have made it my business to give you ten silver shekels and a belt!'

11. Joab sagte zu dem Mann, der ihm das meldete: Wenn du es gesehen hast, warum hast du ihn nicht sofort an Ort und Stelle niedergestoßen? Ich hätte dir dann gern zehn Silberstücke und einen Gürtel gegeben.

12. The man replied to Joab, 'Even if I could feel the weight of a thousand silver shekels in my hand, I would not lift my hand against the king's son. In our own hearing, the king gave you and Abishai and Ittai these orders, "For my sake, spare young Absalom."

12. Der Mann antwortete Joab: Auch wenn ich tausend Silberstücke auf die Hand ausgezahlt erhielte, würde ich meine Hand nicht gegen den Sohn des Königs erheben; denn der König hat dir, Abischai und Ittai vor unseren Ohren befohlen: Gebt mir auf den Jungen, auf Abschalom, Acht!

13. Even if I had deceived myself, nothing stays hidden from the king and you would have dissociated yourself from me.'

13. Hätte ich heimtückisch gehandelt und ihm etwas getan - dem König bleibt ohnehin nichts verborgen -, dann würdest du dich (aus der Sache) heraushalten.

14. Joab then said, 'I cannot waste time arguing with you!' And, taking three darts in his hand, he planted them in Absalom's heart, while he was still alive, deep in the oak-tree.

14. Joab erwiderte: Ich kann mich nicht noch länger mit dir aufhalten. Und er nahm drei Spieße in die Hand und stieß sie Abschalom, der noch lebend an der Eiche hing, ins Herz.

15. Ten soldiers, Joab's armour-bearers, then came in close, struck Absalom and killed him.

15. Die zehn Waffenträger Joabs umringten Abschalom und schlugen ihn tot.

16. Joab then had the trumpet sounded, and the troops left off pursuing Israel, since Joab held the troops back.

16. Dann ließ Joab das Widderhorn blasen und die Krieger hörten auf, die Israeliten zu verfolgen, weil Joab ihnen Einhalt gebot.

17. They took Absalom, flung him into a deep pit in the forest and raised a huge cairn over him. All the Israelites had fled, dispersing to their homes.

17. Sie nahmen Abschalom und warfen ihn im Wald in eine tiefe Grube und errichteten über ihm einen riesigen Steinhaufen. Alle Israeliten aber flohen, jeder in sein Zelt. -

18. Now, during his lifetime, Absalom had made and erected a pillar to himself, which is in the Valley of the King. 'I have no son', he said, 'to preserve the memory of my name.' He gave his own name to the pillar, and today it is still called Absalom's Monument.

18. Abschalom hatte sich schon zu Lebzeiten den Gedenkstein, der jetzt im Königstal steht, herbeischaffen und für sich aufstellen lassen; denn er sagte sich: Ich habe keinen Sohn, der meinen Namen im Gedächtnis (der Menschen) halten würde. Er benannte den Stein nach seinem Namen; deshalb heißt er bis zum heutigen Tag «Abschaloms Hand».

19. Ahimaaz son of Zadok said, 'Let me run and tell the king the good news that Yahweh has vindicated his cause by ridding him of his enemies.'

19. Ahimaaz, der Sohn Zadoks, sagte: Ich will zum König eilen und ihm die freudige Nachricht bringen, dass der Herr ihm Recht gegenüber seinen Feinden verschafft hat.

20. But Joab said, 'Today you would be no bearer of good news, some other day you may be; but today you would not be bringing good news, since the king's son is dead.'

20. Joab sagte zu ihm: Du würdest heute kein Freudenbote sein. An einem anderen Tag kannst du eine gute Nachricht überbringen; heute würdest du nichts Erfreuliches melden; denn der Sohn des Königs ist tot.

21. Joab then said to the Cushite, 'Go and tell the king what you have seen.' The Cushite prostrated himself to Joab and ran off.

21. Und Joab befahl einem Kuschiter: Geh, melde dem König, was du gesehen hast. Der Kuschiter warf sich vor Joab nieder, dann eilte er davon.

22. But Ahimaaz son of Zadok persisted. 'Come what may,' he said to Joab, 'please let me run after the Cushite.' 'My son,' Joab said, 'why run? You will get no reward for your news.'

22. Ahimaaz, der Sohn Zadoks, sagte noch einmal zu Joab: Mag kommen, was will, ich möchte auch hineilen, hinter dem Kuschiter her. Joab antwortete: Warum willst du denn hinlaufen, mein Sohn? Du bekommst keinen Botenlohn.

23. But he replied, 'Come what may, let me run!' and Joab said 'Run, then!' So Ahimaaz ran off along the road through the Plain, outrunning the Cushite.

23. Doch Ahimaaz sagte: Mag kommen, was will; ich laufe hin. Joab erwiderte: Dann lauf! Ahimaaz lief los, nahm den Weg durch die Jordansenke und überholte den Kuschiter.

24. David was sitting between the two gates. The sentry, having gone up to the roof of the gate, looked out from the ramparts and saw a man running alone.

24. David saß zwischen den beiden Toren. Der Späher aber war auf das Dach des Tores, auf die Mauer, gestiegen, und als er Ausschau hielt, sah er einen einzelnen Mann herbeilaufen.

25. The sentry called down to the king and told him. The king said, 'If he is alone, he is bringing good news.'

25. Der Späher rief dem König die Meldung zu. Der König sagte: Wenn er allein ist, dann bringt er eine gute Nachricht. Während der Mann herankam,

26. As the man drew steadily nearer, the lookout man saw another man running, and the sentry above the gate shouted, 'Here comes another man, running alone!' David said, 'He too is a bearer of good news.'

26. sah der Späher noch einen anderen herbeieilen und rief zum Tor hinab: Da läuft noch ein einzelner Mann herbei. Der König sagte: Auch er bringt eine gute Nachricht.

27. The sentry said, 'I recognise the way the first man runs; Ahimaaz son of Zadok runs like that.' 'He is a good man', said the king, 'and comes with good news.'

27. Darauf sagte der Späher: Ich sehe, der erste läuft in der Art des Ahimaaz, des Sohnes Zadoks. Und der König sagte: Das ist ein guter Mann, er kommt mit einer guten Nachricht.

28. Ahimaaz went up to the king. 'All hail!' he said, prostrating himself on the ground before the king. 'Blessed be Yahweh your God', he said, 'who has handed over the men who rebelled against my lord the king!'

28. Ahimaaz rief dem König den Friedensgruß zu, warf sich vor ihm mit dem Gesicht zur Erde nieder und sagte: Gepriesen sei der Herr, dein Gott, der (dir) die Männer ausgeliefert hat, die ihre Hand gegen meinen Herrn, den König, erhoben haben.

29. 'Is all well with young Absalom?' the king asked. Ahimaaz replied, 'I saw a great commotion when Joab, the king's servant, sent your servant off, but I do not know what it was.'

29. Der König fragte: Geht es dem Jungen, Abschalom, gut? Ahimaaz antwortete: Ich sah ein großes Getümmel, als Joab den Knecht des Königs, deinen Knecht, wegschickte; darum weiß ich nicht, was da geschah.

30. The king said, 'Go and stand over there.' He stood to one side and waited.

30. Der König befahl: Tritt zur Seite und stell dich hierher! Ahimaaz trat zur Seite und blieb dort stehen.

31. Then the Cushite arrived. 'Good news for my lord the king!' the Cushite shouted. 'Today Yahweh has vindicated your cause, by ridding you of all who had risen up against you.'

31. Da kam auch der Kuschiter und sagte: Mein Herr, der König, lasse sich die gute Nachricht bringen, dass der Herr dir heute Recht verschafft hat gegenüber allen, die sich gegen dich erhoben hatten.

32. 'Is all well with young Absalom?' the king asked the Cushite. 'May the enemies of my lord the king', the Cushite answered, 'and all who rise up to harm you, share the fate of that young man!'

32. Der König fragte den Kuschiter: Geht es dem Jungen, Abschalom, gut? Der Kuschiter antwortete: Wie dem jungen Mann möge es allen Feinden meines Herrn, des Königs, ergehen, allen, die sich in böser Absicht gegen dich erhoben haben.
